I’m kinda regretting not blogging about Black Lagoon past one. While I originally said that it pretty much followed the manga, the anime has finally started to set its own course, and it’s one hell of a ride.

Besides the metamorphosis from manga clone to something much, much louder, I’m also surprised at how well it’s doing in the community even if it’s a very mindless action series. As of today, Anidb has Black Lagoon with a 8.77 rank, School Rumble 2 at 9.42, Haruhi at 9.09, Ouran at 9.00, Killer Lolis at 8.86, and Simoun at 6.60. What’s to like about Black Lagoon? Well…

First off, the OP, Red Faction, just grows and grows on me. Listening past the awkward Engrish, it really fits the show. If the job of an OP is to get me pumped for an episode, Red Faction does it. I haven’t skipped watching it once.

Second, Tsutomu Isobe is doing a fantastic job as Dutch. If a big, bad-ass black man were ever to speak Japanese, I’m sure this would be what it would sound like. (I also like the multicultural cast… the black boss, the crazy Chinese chix0r, the cockblocking Japanese salaryman, and the Jewish computer hacker. Only in anime would these four ethnic groups team up to be modern age pirates.)

Third, HDTV. Animation is solid, and it’s the second best looking show this season behind Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It doesn’t break new ground like Haruhi, but it’s solid, and the quality has been consistant thus far.

Four, it’s braindead entertainment. Okay, here’s Levi pwning yet another unfortunate soul. Okay, here’s a ship flying to take on a helicopter. It doesn’t take a genius or even a non-drunk, non-high mind to enjoy the action. Considering both my brain cells are already working overtime processing Haruhi, Higurashi, and Planet of the Beast King, it’s a welcome diversion. Great show to help relax after a busy day at work.

Lastly, Levi. I’m been trying to think of another character who has the same ill regard for, well, anything, yet is such an efficient killer. The closest would be Bebop‘s Spike, only he has a goal… Levi seems aimless and just wants to have fun. Gotta love how she smiles will slaughtering the poor sheep. Since the anime has yet to introduce Mad Dog Meido, Levi has been unmatched. Watching her gun down the entire Nazi ship… well… I haven’t seen anything like that since my governor tore through a police station in Terminator 1. Then when she was jumping from ship to ship while fighting Chin’s hitmen, that was right out of Gundam Seed Destiny‘s playbook when Shinn went into Seed mode to save Minerva as it left Orb for the time. She’s a one woman Sword Impulse. Just don’t piss her off.

  1. I started to watch this for the PT boat alone, and am intrigued by the parallel they drew to an actual U-baot mission similar to the one the showed (the actual cargo was a boxed up ME-262, radar equipment, and uranium for making at least a dirty bomb). I also like how they actually knew the name of the main port of the Kriegsmarine at Kiel.

Besides it has pirates and I love Pirates not the one piece 4kids variants though.

My only complaint would be though that most U-boat captains by 1945 weren’t likely to surface during day light due to Allied air cover. Then again you have wooden PT boats taking on Russian gunships, it looked like a Mi-8 Hip variant.

Mad Dog Meido who is that?

  2. “Mad Dog Meido who is that?”

    It’s a surprise.
Be patient, and wait for more episodes on that.^_^

  3. Black Lagoon definitely has one of the best OP this season … together with Higurashi and Magical Pokaan XD
This show is simply good entertainment.

  4. Black Lagoon has MR. T(or a reasonable facsimile)?

    That’s just plain awesome.

  5. This is still the scene that burns in my mind when I think of Black Lagoon.

    What A Way To Go…

  6. >>It doesn’t break new ground like Haruhi, but it’s solid, and the quality has been consistant thus far.

er… does Haruhi break new ground? It’s certainly no better than AIR, which is more than a year old now.

  7. Wish I could translate that Thai on the gun…

  8. Revy should be the correct name for Levi actually.
Her full name is Rebecca, and it’s been shortened to Revy.

Anyway, Revy’s starting to become a bit soft now.
The preview for episode 6 doesnt look good for her and Rock. =(

  9. Rebecca? Bebeko! XD (Pani Poni Dash humour)

Anyhow have a Black Laggon pic

  10. I must admit that I never though of watching this show before. That changed after I saw your comments here.

Thanks for pointing out such a great show to me.

  11. >> Watching her gun down the entire Nazi ship… well… I haven’t seen anything like that since my governor tore through a police station in Terminator 1

    LOL well done with that…
Damn it! I have too much shows already… gomen nasaii Levy, but you have to wait until your series is finish.

  12. omg, Levy is awsome…

and… Levy is Thai o_O… if not.. why is there Thai on her gun?

  13. Revy is Chinese. It was already mentioned in Episode04-05.

  14. Too bad she doesn’t look Asian at all in the anime version.

  15. “Chris Says:
Too bad she doesn’t look Asian at all in the anime version.”

Revy is american-chinese. She was born in new york. They are speaking english, of course we hear them speaking japanese because it is a japanese show. When Levy and Rock accompany balalaika to japan with rock as Balalaika interpreter and Levy to keep rock safe, Levy can’t understand Japanese. Rock is supposed to be a linguist, he know english and spanish as far as I know and probably chinese too.
