lucky ☆ star 11

Just five more minutes, and I’ll be done writing this post…

(Wow. Now, that’s cute.)

One of the things that guys like to do when they congregate is to bust each other’s chops. For instance, at a recent golf outing, we were merciless in teasing each other about bad shots, missed putts, and golf attire. Lucky Star‘s better moments (when it doesn’t need to rely on moe) is when they start busting on each other, like Konata attacked Kagami about snacking so much or when Kagami counterattacked by saying how there’s someone who hasn’t matured because of martial arts around here. Or how Kagami goes on about her “competition” with Tsukasa only Konata tosses in a, “Yep, but it’s not a lot of competition, is it?” Or any scene involving Akira and Taniguchi. There’s just not enough trash talking in anime… I’m not expecting NBA-level, but at least some feistiness would be good.

(Maybe it’s a cultural thing. The Japanese are definitely more polite towards you, but they won’t hesitate to rip you to shreds behind your back like the girls on Laguna Beach. I’m not sure if this is better, since trash talking generally isn’t mean spirited but Laguna Beach-level bitching is generally mean spirited.)

Nevertheless, I’d love to see more cracking between the girls. So far, Konata will crack on anyone, but only Kagami fights back… though weakly sometimes. Tsukasa and Miyuki need to get involved somehow… like when Tsukasa and Miyuki were continuing their 11 episode long discussion about cavities, Tsukasa should have said something like, “Wow, I can’t believe Ms. Perfect doesn’t have perfect teeth. You’re ruined for marriage and have to settle for a poor looking butler.” Or when Konata makes the crack about admiring Miyuki’s bust score, Miyuki could have said something like, “Yeah, I may be rich, have ample busoms, and rock the test scores, but I don’t have a +15 sword of pwnage. You win, Kona-chan.”

In other news, I’m glad to find out that XLG, those great chaps translating High School of the Dead, have started on Lucky Star manga. (Mirror in case you crash their server.)

Shooting Stars

ZOMG! I leaning Tsukasa is fine too.

image

Fired Up Tsukasa ain’t bad either. Andohbytheway, Tsukasa seems to be very fired up about ramen… I now want to see an episode of Muteki Kanban Musume where Miki’s mom hires Tsukasa as an assistant, getting Miki all pissed about it. If, you know, we lived in a world where there were more than 13 episodes of emo ramen goodness and less than 1 episode of Mai Otome Zwei.

image

One of the jokes that could have been handled better is when Kagami goes visiting Tsukasa’s class and everyone knows her as if she were the “14 is the new 17” anime schoolgirl version of Norm. I mean, where in the previous 10 episodes did they explain that all of these random people were in Tsukasa’s class? Most of them except for Sebastian never even had any dialogue before.

I’ve done ESD testing of silicon integrated circuits before. The ancient way is basically charing up a huge capacitor and then flip a switch that will discharge the capacitor into a pin of the device under test. Nowadays, most testing is highly automated with large, fancy machines that will suspend a device in a controlled chamber, charge the chamber, and then discharge each pin one by one. I’ve seen these in action, and it’s pretty cool… like a tiny microclimate lightening storm. Most (good) electronics these days can withstand 4,000V discharge under JEDEC’s human body model, but most high speed elements cannot, so if you are installing brand new fancy RAM, it is a very good idea to keep grounded while installing it.

Enjoyed Tsukasa’s |_| face. Since I have nothing else to add to this, watch some Lucky ☆ Maiden, episode 1 and episode 2.

One of the more ironic segments in anime recently has to be Kagami and Konata’s discussion about the increase in “crimes against children” and how Konata proposes teaching the kids hapkido to reduce the crime. First off, I doubt that these “crimes against children” are like pushing them down and stealing their lunch money. I think they’re probably referring more of the Chris Hansen variety, and isn’t it kinda ironic for an anime featuring characters drawn purposefully young to be saying something about this topic in a misunderstood way? In any case, I stand by my assertation that Konata should be helping out Chris.

(In a related story, Kotaku explores underaged crimes in video games.)

image

See? Having Lucky Star talk about crimes against children is kinda like hearing Pacman Jones talk about gun control.

image

Or maybe hearing Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan talk about drinking and driving followed by a lecture on sexually transmitted diseases.

image

Making the obligatory, “She’s staring down the cup of ramen like how a typical Lucky Star doujinshi affectionado stares down a school girl” comment.

image

You gotta feel for LOL FANG-SENSEI about the Christmas Cake bit (thanks Juan for the e-mail), and maybe that’s part of her appeal… isn’t pity a moe mode? Though, in the US, it has always been 30 and not 25, and nowadays with people opting for later marriage, the new saying is “40 is the new 30.” I’d say more, but I’m terrified of the repercussions.

(Though if LOL FANG-SENSEI wanted to meet a large volume of men and quickly, she’d just show up at AX with a tight WoW T-shirt.)

image

(OMFG… great idea… a JAV featuring twin shrine maidens at a temple… inside a church… might as well go for a synagogue too…. I’d go to hell but I’d be rich… how do… wait, am I thinking out loud in my blog again. OH SHI-)

image

You know what would be hilarious, not as sacrilegious as twins touring cathedrals, and be a welcome change-up? If for one Lucky Channel, Akira doesn’t turn into Surly and Mentally Imbalanced Akira. Every episode, I keep anticipating when she’ll crank like Rasheed Wallace during any Piston’s away game, and it’ll be just so weird and disorienting if we got a normal Lucky Channel for once. I’d probably go re-check the CRC on the file like fifty times to make sure I didn’t miss anything.

image

Whoa, I knew this ending before the lyrics/dialogue kicked in. Doraemon! Gave me the nostalgia shakes… I suddenly felt like drinking some Hi-C and finishing up my Where the Red Fern Grows book report. I watched Doraemon almost religiously when I was in elementary/middle school, so when I see stories like this, I cringe a little. Even Doraemon is selling out.

(And, whoa, did we just make it through an episode without a Kyoto self-reference? I’m getting withdrawal symptoms…)

Bye-bee!

  1. The Sensei segment was strangely serious, as if the L*S wanted to turn into a different anime altogether (or what is the seinen’s equivalent for women, I forgot). It was capped well with the crushing captions though and all was right again.

Another thing I took away from ep.11 was Konata’s Dad and Christmas. Simple, but fine too.

  2. Ah… Kagami in her miko robes…

The other side characters (Kagami’s classmates + Yui’s sister/Konata’s cousin) finally made an appearance in this episode… I wonder how many eps will it be until we finally see them with more speaking roles.

Konata’s dad just cracks me up… lol @ the plastic board bit.

  3. >>be a welcome change-up? If for one Lucky Channel, Akira doesn’t turn into Surly and Mentally Imbalanced Akira. Every episode
This is what I was talking about since the beginning, wayy to redundant, and unless I heard wrong, did she say she was going to appear in the next ep.. oh shi-………..does Kyoto hate me?
Lol, yeah no Kyoto self references, Hayate stole that this week.
I wish I could somehow make an avatar with that part of them each taking turns not touching the door handle cause of static shock but without the audio it wouldn’t be as good,
    OH! OH! OH! NO! Yes!
That kinda sounds wrong now that I spell it out.
Great episode good laughs, if akira does show up I hope its just a short part like “Sebastian” has, shes most likely the person Konata was talking about her cousin entering highschool n such.

  4. I mean, where in the previous 10 episodes did they explain that all of these random people were in Tsukasa’s class? Most of them except for Sebastian never even had any dialogue before.

As I understand, the classmates that addressed Kagami with ‘Hiiragi’ are her own classmates while those who called her with just ‘Kagami’ is Tsukasa’s classmates. The joke is that she visits Tsukasa’s classroom so often that they now casually address her by her first name.

  5. isn’t pity a moe mode?
It’s why most of us continued to watch Kanon right? Nothing like 5 girls (and one hapless sarcastic harem lead) gone so, so horribly (yet adorably) wrong, or something like that. NAYUKI MAI SHIORI ENDING

*coughs* Em, now to actually go watch LS11…

  6. Not as good as that woman who saddled a guy for an Epic Mount (WoW). See, Epic Mount now sounds like a position, doesn’t it?

  7. You didn’t mention Tommy Lee Jones!

Poor Kuroi-sensei. Any chance for a Top Ten Single Anime Women Over 25? (Or in the anime universe, over 20)

  8. If I had to pick two of my favorite jokes off this episode, it would be the off-hand remark to Sebastian (because it implies a delicious self-referential paradox of LS foursome watching Lucky Channel – at least the scene seems to imply so and Konata’s Newtype activities reinforce this) and the two-parter, not-so-subtle double play with cakes and FANG-SENSEI’s age (especially so with her self-encouragement /denial, “it ain’t leftover… cause I bought it”). Also noteworthy were the “did you just insult lots of people?” and Hiiragi twins’ panic over Konata having “beaten” them to a boyfriend.

Lucky Star is really growing on me each episode. Well it started as #2 on my list to begin with, but it has continued to secure its position by making headway to #3 by leaps and bounds.

  9. And, whoa, did we just make it through an episode without a Kyoto self-reference? I’m getting withdrawal symptoms…
Very light on the anime references this week. Caught the Gunslinger Girl one at the start, then that was it.

  10. >> Doraemon! Gave me the nostalgia shakes… I suddenly felt like drinking some Hi-C and finishing up my Where the Red Fern Grows book report.

    Such fond memories… *sigh*

  11. doraemon was godly

i was half expecting sakura taisen though

on another note… school days! animated, 7/3 this will be an interesting train wreck

  12.
Very light on the anime references this week. Caught the Gunslinger Girl one at the start, then that was it.
if you mean the machine gun at station bit, it’s not gunslinger at all, it’s from a j-drama called “sailor uniform and machine gun” which takes place at the same station :3 got off

  13.
And, whoa, did we just make it through an episode without a Kyoto self-reference?
Actually, after a rewatch, one of the answers in Kagami’s test is Daisuke Ono, VA of everyone’s favorite esper.

i guess you missed the joke, all the ppl that calls her family name “hiiragi” are in kagami’s class, while all the ppl call her given name “kagami” are in kotana’s class
actually the joke is kinda weird, since the 2 girls calls kagami “hiiragi” are Ayano and Misao, 2 of kagami’s closest friends who have been in same class with kagami since beginning of the middle school according to manga

  15. I love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love Lucky Star. Anyway, Akira showing up WoW one can only imagine what would go down. What’s this “If for one Lucky Channel, Akira doesn’t turn into Surly and Mentally Imbalanced Akira.” Hmmmmm LAME!!!!!

  16. Ah, “Where the Dead Dogs Grow”…I had to do a book report on that too back in the day…

The average age women in Japan get married is going up like everywhere else, it was up to 26 a few years ago, so lol fang-sensei has a lot of company in the Christmas Cake category. I was half-expecting sensei to go postal on them when she overheard that conversation, but I guess she has more restraint than Akira-sama (or she really didn’t hear them).

  17. @_@ Doraemon… natsukashi ne…. a local channel here still airs Doraemon like we were in the 80’s (good times, definitly good times). Is awesome how series we saw fifteen years ago still hit us deep inside…. I was four (1988) when I started to see anime, with shows like Doraemon, Mazinger, Macross, Tetsujin 28, and believe it or not, the good american cartoons of that time (Silver Hacks,Thunder Cats, BraveStar, Transformers). I have 23 now, so I’ve almost 20 years watching anime…. am I tired of it? Hell no…. I love it very much… and I will for a long time…

    Classics banzai!!!

  18.
Enjoyed Tsukasa’s |_| face. Since I have nothing else to add to this, watch some Lucky ☆ Maiden, episode 1 and episode 2.
That is some f**ked up s**t right there. Desu.

Are we limiting it to actual “single” single women, or are divorcee’s, widows, and/or MILFs allowed? I vote not to, because if Aki Hinata’s involved, it’s going to be over before it starts…

  19. I had heard (somewhere) that 31 is the new 25 and that the term “New Year’s Cake” is gaining popularity. (I think it was in regards to Hataraki Man.)

  20. STRONGER!!!

  21. the best part of this episode is otou-san “STRONGERRRRRRRR!”

  22. I suddenly felt like drinking some Hi-C and finishing up my Where the Red Fern Grows book report.
    I think I got a C on that book report. >_

  23. Twas the Red Badge of Courage for me. I stole the book and never did the book report. I hated middle school so much.

I loved Tsukasa’s reaction to Konata dissing her “Stupid Kona-chan thinks shes all that?!” It would’ve been golden had she called her a stupid poopy head.

  24. Didn’t Tsukasa hit Konata with a couple of zingers in previous episodes too? Looks like our favorite moe doormat may be hiding a pretty sharp wit behind her clueless exterior.

  25. L-O-V-E! LOVELY NANAKON!

I can totally identify with Nanako-sensei’s Christmas blues… as soon as the girls started talking about Christmas and relationships, it was obvious where the joke was going. I can’t decide whether it was laugh-your-ass-off funny or an I’ve-got-something-in-my-eye moment, so I’ll settle for “both”… The denouement was really touching (while still hilarious).

Anyway, this episode elevated Nanakon to Absolutely Moelicious.
