Haruhi, Pekopon Disguise Keroro, Mikuru, Robin, Al, and, of course, a random meido looking like Sister Princess‘ Jiiya. Now that’s an all-star cast. Into Lucky Star‘s stab at a ComiKet parody we go…
With all the Full Metal Panic references, probably isn’t a surprise that Shouji Gatou did this episode. Though I am not surprised with all the Kyoto references, but there’s also a lot of references to Shuffle and Keroro. Shuffle is kinda understandable with some production crew overlap and the appearance of Shuffle in Haruhi, but I don’t fully understand why Kyoto references Keroro so much except Keroro is awesome, but… maybe… Kyoto is taking over Keroro Gunso! Or maybe the next Keroro movie would feature Natsumi running into an esper, a time traveler, and a non-frog, non-snake, non-detective, non-god of destruction alien. Wild ass internet rumor 4tw!
The first half of this episode was fairly entertaining, but outside of Comic Party, I haven’t watched any anime featuring ComiKet parodies to be non-interesting. I find them interesting just because it’s almost impossible to make an otaku being otaku anime (like this or Genshiken or Comic Party) and not include an episode or chapter about it. It’s also funny when it randomly shows up in shows that it has no business showing up for, like Hanaukyo Meido. Plus it always gives the anime a chance to toss some cosplay outfits on the characters, which is always enjoyable. I am disappointed that they didn’t do so for the Lucky Star girls. Obvious choices aside, I would have liked to see them as the Gurren Lagann cast. Tsukasa would be Nia, Kagami + Wonderbra = poor man’s Yoko, and, of course, Konata would be Simon.
I kinda wished that they just went with that angle for the whole episode. But making fun of ComiKet is well, I dunno, isn’t the core audience of Lucky Star the same people who would go to ComiKet? Even if it is true, why would you make fun of your core audience? Isn’t this kinda like Fox NFL Sunday making fun of overweight people in Wisconsin or Michael Moore making fun of liberals?

Took me a while to figure out that they were talking about ComiKet and not talking about Konata pimping Tsukasa out with Kagami as the “veteran” giving advice. Does sound a lot like these lines came from Boogie Nights… mmm… Tsukasa on rollerskates…
(Random thought in a post with tons of random thoughts about a TV show comprised of nothing but random thoughts, but what if Miyuki went with them? Would anyone pay attention to her? Does she have the stuff capable of keeping the attention of all the fanboys at ComiKet?)
Top Five Facial Expressions… #5, a scared Tsukasa is fine too. Even though it’s been a year since Mikuru graced us with her ‘fraidy cat act, Tsukasa has picked up the slack nicely. Honestly, with her style and assets, she has good reason to be terrified at ComiKet.
Top Five Facial Expressions… #4, Konata turning into the Zagat’s of the doujinshi pr0n industry. Her father must be so proud. Literally.
Ulterior motives 4tw! That’s one thing I like about Chinese and Japanese gift giving over the holidays… cold, hard cash. Unlike the more Western Christmas, I don’t have to worry about finding socks or a copy of Abraham Lincoln’s biography (yes, I got this once…) under the tree. Then again, without Christmas, we wouldn’t have the Nintendo Kid…

If I had a Tsukasa and Kagami meido waitress symmetrical docking image, I’d definitely use it as the new banner for AoMM. (Hint hint) Miko… nurse… maybe not so much, but that’s just me. Nevertheless, Kagami looks horrible with a hangover; Tsukasa isn’t too bad…
I’ve been hooked on Puzzle Quest lately. In fact, I’m going to continue to level up my knight after writing this post. It is absolute genius to slap RPG-elements onto Bejeweled with some Pokemon mixed in; it’s like mixing crack with meth or bunny girls with meido. I honestly can’t wait for the XBLA version.
(Is part of Konata’s charm that she has promiscuous looking anime figures in her room?)

(Yes, I’ve already seen two people with iPhones over the weekend. This could be the first ever anime blog post that talks about Puzzle Quest, iPhone, Transformers, and Asian Bird Flu. I’m going for the instant pop culture cycle here…)
Top Five Facial Expressions… #3, Tsukasa using a cell phone scared. Moe! Now only if she had an iPhone with a Keroro strap.
Top Five Facial Expressions… #2, Yaoi-browsing Kagami. If this leads Kagami down the path of being a 801 fangirl and having her and Konata join Genshiken in a few years, all the better. Kagami does have all the potential to be a very good 801 fangirl. Though if I had to pick what BL pairing would pop up in Lucky Star first, Sagara x Gauron aren’t a bad choice. Kyon x Itsuki would be a solid second (though I like the bit about how the Kyon stuff isn’t selling). Keroro x Giroro would be a dark horse third. I can only imagine a typical reader thinking, “Wait, AoMM hasn’t tossed up a Meido Power Ranking™ in over half a year but we get a BL pairing ranking? What shit is this?”
(In the realm of useless knowledge, 801 is a publisher with yaoi that has somehow morphed into a meme of such.)
(As a similar thought, how come the girls have to wait an hour to use the bathroom? Isn’t it like a 99/1 ratio between men and women? Or is it like ISSCC where they close off all the women’s bathrooms and turn them into men’s rooms? Yes, yet another reason to get the hell out of engineering if you’re still in it.)
What is up with using different animation styles to depict various extraneous characters? Gives me a headache.
Yes, it’s very disorienting watching an anime that takes place during winter when it’s like 85 degrees and sunny outside. I can’t feel very New Year-ish when I’m stockpiling illegal fireworks for Fourth of July.
Asian Bird Flu SARS Akira is fine too. Uh, maybe not. Definitely horrible whooping cough illness is hard to overcome for moe… I’m not even sure if Tsukasa could pull it off. Maybe Yoko or Mikuru, but even then I’d think it’s a longshot. Anyway, shortest and least funny Lucky Channel thus far.
(The Akira cutout bit was funny if you just picture Akira seeing her cutout knocked down and going ballistic over it.)
Top Five Facial Expressions… #1, Kagami and Tsukasa hearing about the first ComiKet that Konata went to. Oh man, the bar has been reset! Can Shion and Mion overtake them for “Most Riveting Scared Expression by Twins”?
Lastly, I couldn’t get this song at the end. Blah. I’m failing Lucky Star karaoke.

I liked the part where the Anime Tenchou wasn’t having Sugita Tomokazu’s lack of passion for his job and sent him flying into the shelf. Hot Bloodedness beats sarcasm any day of the week.

The song Konata sang a capella is from Godman, an old sentai show. The second one is Makenaide by ZARD; a tribute to the recently deceased Izumi Sakai.
First half was blatant fun at the otaku crowd; second half was placid fun. Both parts very enjoyable.
If you think they have a wierd fixation with Keroro, wait for Episode 13…
Lol, did anyone notice the Super Robot Taisen-ish sound when Konata loaded her purse with extra cash?
No comment on Kyon vs Sagara or the Nagato cameo?
Aww… Miyuki was left out of the comiket group i feel kinda bad. I don’t doubt that she would have a great facial expression upon approaching the sea of people that actually attend such an event. She could probably have topped Tsukasas’ WTF’ness trying to navigate the place.
Seeing how the people at the booth trying to get Konata to buy their manga said “we’ll try again next year” (or something close to that), I have to wonder if this series is going to span through their next year and cover their next comiket as well, Azumanga went through all 3 years right? why can’t Lucky Star.
lastly, I was scared to see Akira actually ruin.. err.. show up in this episode, luckily they just made a joke of it and I have to say I enjoyed it mainly because as the scene with her poster falling and getting bent you can just imagine how she would react to seeing such a situation. I also enjoyed this lucky channel cause she didn’t say anything.
Some highlights of this ep…
-We now know Konata likes to read hentai doujins. (“Dripping Brigade Chief” and “Naughty Captain”? xD ) And of course, she needs 3 copies of each.
-An uber-flustered yaoi-browsing Kagami is fine, too
-Better Kanon referencing…sort of
-Itsuki outselling Kyon xD
-Shrine maidens |3
-Konata’s zero faith in her dad’s pochi bag explanation
And so, Kyoto continues their episode 12 streak.
Not too surprising that Jason didn’t pick up on Anizawa Meito (voiced by Tomokazu Seiki, who did Sagara from FMP, and Domon from God Gundam) picking on a VERY accurate rendition of Tomokazu Sugita (who voiced Kyon from Haruhi and Yuuichi from Kanon)…

i almost didn’t pick up the reference on Nagato’s seiyuu until i rewinded and watched that scene again.
which leads me to ask, why didn’t their cards sell so well? Kyon and Sousuke are both made of win….
What’s the name of that building where Comiket was held at? My parents went there a couple weeks back (non-comiket season) and all they know is that the area’s called Odaiba, whereas in this ep its called Akate.
And on one more note, if transformers ever featured a car with Haruhi painted on the hood transforming, I can keel over and die in the theatre then and there with no regrets.
Bumblebee disguises himself as VW Beetle. Thus, that’s not him. Now as Japanese drive and sit on the wrong side, there’s still some hope there’s a driver behind the white out part of the windscreen. Was Japan ever invaded by Britains or are they Tatu fans?
I don’t see how they made fun of their audience unless you think Keroro Gunsou makes fun of his audience. Or maybe this kind of audience doesn’t have a problem with that. Perhaps, most of the audience doesn’t go to such conventions anyway? Isn’t that like StarTrek? Most people who watched it liked it, I guess, but how many of them were “Trekkies”? Really, I never felt such desire and an audience is seldomly homogeneous albeit the media might give you a different impression.
The voice acting of the guys at the convention, seemingly deliberately bad, really sucked. One guy to voice them all, nice, not. The scene with the weird sellers, animated in a quite different style, was pointless in a boring kind of way. I suspect they just wanted to prove that they can still do better animation.
The fact Kagami’s curiosity convinced her into looking at yaoi won her over for me. For some reason, girls looking at yaoi is a cute concept so long as their faces turn bright read.
And yeah, I thought they were talking about something else on the train to ComiKet… *ecchi*
You may have to age Kagami and Tsukasa about 4 years before a symmetrical docking logo is viable, Jason. I think their noses or foreheads would collide first.

I think these were actually the Arm Slave noises, but, yes, fantastic.
This ep was a tad slow for me… aside from seeing the twins in their miko outfits, the only part of the episode I found entertaining was Tenchou (voiced by Tomokazu Seki) and generic Animate clerk (voiced by Tomokazu Sugita) arguing over Sagara & Kyon goods.
The Animate product placement is starting to get a bit odd for me though… their 3rd appearance in the next ep (complete with guest appearance of the VAs for Keroro, Giroro & Tamama) is starting to mark Animate Tenchou as a recurring character for the KyoAni adaption of Lucky Star.
Ahh, Puzzle Quest. I played the demo, and it was fun, but I always ended up powering up rune-made items to start out with an unfair advantage, and then simply spamming direct damage spells. All I ever ended up matching was the gimme 4+ in a rows, and any skulls to prevent the computer from using them on me.
I am waiting for the parody of Tsukasa somehow finding the Sagara x Gauron doujinshi in Kagami’s room.
As for girl’s bathrooms, I assume that bathrooms near certain events get used more often, and you cannot fit as many stalls in a space as you can urinals. Also, just because of the mechanics involved, girls take longer to use a restroom. These probably all contribute to the longer lines.

If Bumblebee isn’t a VW Beetle, it’s not Bumblebee. I guess they couldn’t stand that the good guy is a Nazi car, so they picked some American rice burner instead. The makers of Transformers 2007 are just in for the $$$, they have no respect for Transfomers or the original fans anyway.
The only good Transformers series was G1, especially Season 3. Everything afterwards was just plain trash. BeastWars? Yuck! Especially the character redesigns are ugly as hell and in some series Transformers are even just dead mecha… One exception are the comic books by Dreamwave Productions:

It could be a Murder Princess reference, a Fate/Stay Night reference or some generic “princess-like” characters just for fillers.

It just looks like they slapped Clare’s head on Arcuied’s princess-y anime dress. It doesn’t look like Murder Princess and only a little bit like F/SN. Heck, for all we know it means nothing. But knowing Lucky Star that probably isn’t the case.

That face-off was my favorite part. The not-selling-well part was a gag; those Kyon and Sousuke (tele)cards didn’t go on sale until well after the episode aired. And I haven’t seen an Itsuki card yet.
Poor Kagami, exposed to BL…Oh well…

A word of advice in case you run into a fully-equipped, fully-levelled wizard like mine: have your spell resistance as high as possible, especially against fire, otherwise you might lose without getting to play a single turn.

The huge amount of self-referencing to the industry is enough to give this show replay value for me. And man, Clerk Sugita is a dead on caricature of Sugita himself. Especially the large forehead. And yes, Gintoki from Gintama is a great role of his.

Actually, they BEGGED Volkswagon to let them use the Beetle for Bumblebee, but VW refused. They want to stay away from their roots as a wartime contractor (Especially since the beetle was designed by Hitler himself).
And have you SEEN the movie? It’s full of references that only the original fans would get.
