momentum for july

It’s a robot. You know, like a super advanced robot. It’s probably Japanese.

In classic fanboy fashion, I had a discussion recently about the most bad ass anime robot (not strongest) ever. This is one of those important questions that rank up there with, “Who is the greatest power forward of all time?” I think Gurren Lagann has forced himself into the conversation along with various Gundams, Big O, Vandread, Megaman, Escaflowne, and others. (Even had a small debate about Eva Unit 1… I think she should be excluded because, well, no robot modeled after someone’s mom can ever be considered bad ass.) But no one brought up Optimus Prime or Grimlok. I feel like we were all failures as fanboys.

(Was so tempted to use the “spider pig” quote instead with a shot of Gurren Lagann webslinging from episode 12, but I didn’t want to wait until July 27th to toss up this post.)

You have failed me again, Starscream.

Gratz to Viral for becoming the new Starscream. You deserved it… lots of shitty effort and poor decisions… and running away.

image

What’s up, little bitches?

Note to anime directors: making us suffer through twelve episodes of inane crap with only a lesbian kiss as a payoff is just not worth it. That was okay a few years ago, but you gotta go farther than Yami to Boushi these days. We demand more.

LEFT CHEEK! LEFT CHEEK! LEFT CHEEK!

They changed the ED to Hayate, and I don’t like it. I need Mell’s pu-ruu-foo to taper me off of Nagi’s and Hayate’s antics. Oh well, at least we get a drunken orgy and Maria and Hina in bikinis, which kinda has the opposite effect.

image

She’s a criminal. And criminals are HOT!

I’d scribble in her notebook, if you know what I– *drops dead due to a heart attack*

image

The pheromone levels in the male indicates he wants to mate with the other.

Sunrise should just get it over with and turn Mai Otome Zwei into softcore pr0n. There’s just no redeeming entertainment value left– it used to be so bad it was good, now it’s just bad. Even the fanservice seems cheap and crappy. I don’t really see how Sunrise can rescue this series plot-wise anymore. If anyone has plot suggestions that can redeem this series through good, non-fanservice-ladden writing, please let me know. I sure can’t think of any.

image

Are you LadiesMan217?

I’m strangely looking forward to this, not because I actually care about the mystery, but rather how many bloggers will try again and defend this as an honest-to-goodness “good and dramatic” series. Sorry, Higurashi Kai‘s ceiling is slightly lower than the original, just because the original was already so random and over-the-top, I’m not sure what can they do now to make it even more over the top, well, besides introducing cars that can morph into giant robots. Worst case scenario is, of course, Mai Otome Zwei.

(In other words, I’m still pining for more Mushishi.)

Autobots, transform and roll out.

I’m definitely looking forward to more of this series, and, as long as I’m not trapped under a rock or something, expect a return of the SOS Brigade Awesome Index. Was there any doubt that we’ll get more Kyon x Itsuki action? It’s definitely the anime money cash crop right now, probably more lucrative than Gundam presently, though with 00 coming, who knows? They may, gasp, actually make a truly awesome 50 episode Gundam series. Stranger things have happened. Anyway, from all indications, we’re getting the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya plotline, which involves a lot of nonsensical time travel within nonsensical time travel.

More than meets the eye.

I am wrong about the Prince being annoying. He does still look like a twerp, but he’s as solid as Garlock Simon. We’re in good hands with him. Spring 2007 felt like a really weird season where the male characters are actually non-losers. BTW, I’m finding Guardian of the Sacred Spirit‘s filler episodes to be pretty solid as well. Reminds me a lot of the atmosphere and tone of Kenshin, except the focus isn’t on swordfighting but on life and being a better person. I guess this is the sort of things that happen when you base an anime off of a children’s novel instead of an h-game. Speaking of which…

image

Why, if he’s such a super advanced robot, does he turn into this piece of crap Camaro?

Doesn’t light novel to anime translations seem to have a higher success rate than manga to anime translations and much, much higher than h-game to anime translations? Maybe it’s because they are just culling the cream of the crop right now, but Full Metal Panic, Banner/Crest of the Stars, Haruhi, Seirei, Shana, and even Zero no Tsukaima, were all at least above average at worst. Or maybe it is because light novels can’t rely on fanservice to sell like other mediums, so it has to present a decent plot whereas h-games are popular because of their fanservice, only their anime director thinks it’s because of the plot… hence disappointing anime. While fanservice is nice, a good plot is still more important as fanservice can always be filled in after the fact with Megami spreads as well as doujinshi and plastic models. Makes me kinda wonder why they don’t just make h-anime out of h-games. Would you rather watch the current F/SN incarnation or an h version complete with Rin x Saber action?

(In unrelated news, a photo spread for Megan Fox.)

A driver don’t pick the cars. Mmm-mm. Cars pick the driver.

It’s been five years already?!? Man, time flies when you’re typing out stuff like “nekomimi meido” and “killer lolis.” Never thought that AoMM would have gone on for this long, but, as I said it before, as long as I still have fun doing this, I’ll still do this… nonetheless, thanks to everyone who reads this blog. I get some of the best ideas and posts out there because someone out there tells me, “Hey, you should read/watch/look at this!” And the enthusiasm and joy of anime out there from all the readers help keep me going. Yes, even the “Yep… these are my readers” comments. Thanks everyone… どうぞよろしくお願いします.

  1. ROTFLOL at the Transformers lines. And Megan Fox is hot.

  2. Lol, I’ve seen Transformers twice in two days now. Not just because it’s a fun movie, but if it does well it might clear the way for another live action mecha movie…
Keep up with Higurashi Kai, what’s the worst that could happen?

  3. Spider pig, spider pig, does whatever a spider pig does. Look howwww, he is a spider pig.

  4. Dai-Guard, the soldier of peace, is the greatest of them robots.

  5. Lack of Lucky Star pics…. oh well.
I have mixed feelings on that new Hayate ed, but its totally worth it for Maria in a bikini.
The ending to the Tranformers movie seemed to ruin it for quite a few people, not just 50% of those I went with but others who bitched to me about it as well, any thoughts on that?

  6.
(In unrelated news, a photo spread for Megan Fox.)
Far as I’m concerned, a Megan Fox spread is always related.

  7. Wow, grats on 5 years!

Gurren Lagann has forced himself into the conversation along with various Gundams, Big O, Vandread, Megaman, Escaflowne, and others.

The one advantage that the Gurren Lagann has (besides being able to talk out of its stomach) is that it is upgradeable on the fly. It’s like an open source model that anyone can develop skins and mods for.

I don’t really see how Sunrise can rescue this series plot-wise anymore.

I foresee a new series with new unlikeable main characters and even more cameos by everyone who has appeared in the Mai universe so far.

He does still look like a twerp, but he’s as solid as Garlock Simon.

While Chagum’s coolness development has been faster than Simon’s, without as much baggage, you can’t teach 7-feet or innate mech piloting skillz. I say you still have to take Simon first.

  8. wasn’t the line “ARE YOU USERNAME LADIESMAN217?”

  9. ^^

  10. >>The ending to the Tranformers movie seemed to ruin it for quite a few people, not just 50% of those I went with but others who bitched to me about it as well, any thoughts on that?

Transformers was like FFVII: Advent Children. No one is watching it for the plot. Who cares about the ending? We’re only watching it for cool CGI battles and stuff blowing up.

Funny thing, as I was watching Transformers yesterday, I found myself thinking in anime terms. Actual things I said to myself included, “Wow, Shia’s character is still stuck in ‘wimpy harem male lead’ mode right now”, or “Is it just me, or has Megan Fox’s character been more GAR than Shia’s so far?”

  11. LoL, I can see what you mean Mirrinus, I’m not saying I personally didn’t enjoy it, I was just enjoying the mech battles n such as much as you were, but I was wondering if many people got disappointed by the gamecube in megatrons’ chest ending, or if I just have weird friends.

  12. I didn’t really care about the plot either. The thing that disappointed me the most was the pacing and camera-work of the transformer vs. transformer battles. Anything involving hand-to-hand combat between robots was greatly blurred and flew by much too quickly. It’s understandable from a technical standpoint, but disappointing nonetheless.

  13. Sooo you are going to blog Higurashi? FUCK YEAH.
I love Hanyuu and to have you not praise her would make me die a little inside.
But the first episode sucks. Akasaka isn’t hot There is alot of old men talking.

  14.
I am wrong about the Prince being annoying. He does still look like a twerp, but he’s as solid as Garlock Simon.
Chagum is WIN. The best thing about episode 12 was that through the whole part with Chagum and the bully, you could tell that Chagum was 8 kinds if scared s**tless under the hood, but he DIDN’T SHOW IT. If the boy survives to puberty, he’s gonna be one hell of a pimp.
While Chagum’s coolness development has been faster than Simon’s, without as much baggage, you can’t teach 7-feet or innate mech piloting skillz. I say you still have to take Simon first.
Meh. Every shota in every mech series has “innate mech piloting skillz.” Every other prince in a “prince protected by a mysterious badass” situation is a total pussy with a complete lack of redeeming value until maybe right before the end. Congrats on Simon passing the Shinji stage before the second half of the series, but still, Chagum > Simon.

I say we give Chagum a scarf and see how he stands off against Simon in the Lagann.

  15. Well it’s a Michael Bad… oops Bay trademark. Cameras on booze. Although for this movie I personally feel the fight scenes are awesome. And yeah, If we were allowed to scrutinize the actions carefully, I have no doubt it’ll feel very fake. Sigh, Starscream’s dogfight with the F22s was godly. I’m sure that would be how a real live Macross fight scene be.

    .
And when did this become a Transformers post? Hmm… too bad Jason won’t do a Transformers post in this AoMM.

  16. Higurashi is alot more enjoyable if you actually know the background story. Like how everything in Himinazwa is caused by a convinient plot-device disease named Himinazawa Syndrome, the fact that Oyashiro-sama herself is actually a tearful moe enitity who likes candy, and that Rika had been resetting the world over and over (with the help of “Oyashiro”) so she could live in a scenario where she doesn’t ultimately die.

I’ve been watching a few of the the new season shows and so far there hasn’t really been anything spectacular. Though I did find Kenko Zenrakei Suieibu Umisho enjoyable as just one of those simple fanservice fest shows (and I’ll admit that I watched it because the words “Fully-Nude Swimming Club” was in the title).

  17. Transformers was the best damn toy whoring, military recruitment, ebay, pepsi and Chevrolet ad to grace theaters. It was glorious.

Still what the hell happened to Decepitcons Destroy? Sounds better than the goody goody long winded Autobot motto. Ah well all I am really looking forward this season is Mononoke. Haruhi-sama’s second coming can’t come soon enough.

  18. crusader, we are brainwave-buddies.
(he said everything i wanted to say)
    *.*

  19. well, at least there’s a good setup for a Transformers movie sequel (Unicron and Galvatron anyone?). the only thing i cared about going into the movie is whether or not the most important character of the movie, Optimus Prime, would be ruinated. he wasn’t. Peter Cullen was on fire, and Optimus can still beat the ever living tar out of any Decepticon, except for the oddly overpowered Megatron in the movie (anyone else wondering where the hell the Matrix of Leadership was in all of this?) while they didn’t make Megatron transform into something better than a funky jet, they did score an awesome actor to provide his voice. i did not recognize Hugo Weaving at all, even after the credits rolled.

i’ll take Optimus over the Gurren Lagann anyday, but will take both Megan Fox and Yoko, thank you very much.

  20. How about Kino no Tabi and Scrapped Princess as decent light novel to anime adaptions? I haven’t actually watched much of either anime but they must be good considering the source material.

  21. the Scrapped Princess anime was actually quite good, possessing a pacing that was totally unique to it from what i have seen in anime. it to this day hasn’t been replicated, which is kind of a shame, because it seemed to flow pretty realistically when it came to dialogue.

  22. If you are going to review first episode of second Higurashi Kai I beg you, keep in mind that aliens thing is internet speculation, please.

  23. Kino no Tabi was nice. Scrapped Princess was good too (it’s by Bones after all).

  24. Slayers was also a light novel adaptation. And Dirty Pair.

  25. For Higurashi Kai, I think that you’re better off not knowing the background story, i.e watched the 1st season.

It’s pure unintentional comedy gold when you hear them trying to unravel the Hinamizawa mystery in a “logical” way, from scientific analysis to “giving the file a numbered code name so that it sounds mysterious and authentic” when the 1st season was a total train wreck with a “plot” avoiding reason like the plague.

Conveniently popping in alien conspiracies (alien bioterrorsim ftw!) in the same breath as a lawyer presenting physical evidence in court is a bad way of trying to make one take you seriously. Heck, I was laughing my head off while my roommate was staring at me, pondering what could I possibly find funny at such a grim sounding/looking anime.

Meanwhile, Rena obviously became a cover girl for anti-ageing creams/Botox/plastic surgery. Otherwise how could she look 20 when she’s in the late 40-s, approaching menopause while making extreme facial contortions on a daily basis in her youth? If she was real, Demi Moore would be consulting her for her next major facelift.

Anyway, Rena only made one weak emo face in the 1 st episode, and no “Uso da!” too. The producers obviously still don’t know their audience…

  26. Well EVA units are more a cyborg that a mech.

Insert random Transformers movie comment here

  27. Higurashi OP : A tear eyed Rena standing next to an industrial fan is fine too.
An Oishii heavy episode however, is not fine.

  28. I didn’t think Higurashi was so bad as a refresher… I see the show as a horror so I think it produces the right mood, even with plot whole and such.
Meanwhile, Rena obviously became a cover girl for anti-ageing creams/Botox/plastic surgery. Otherwise how could she look 20 when she’s in the late 40-s,
Technically isn’t she in here late 30’s? They say the incident happened 20 years ago… since i think the volcanic gas leak happened in 1983 that would put the time line at 2003 im assuming. And she was on 16 or so at the time maybe less ( ball parking the ages). I guess this is part of 14 being the new 17… 25 is the new 40 :-)

  29. 1. I hope you blog either Higurashi S2 or School Days AT LEAST for your summer anime blogging needs. Adult Rena is HOT (though I thought she was supposed to be dead… must have misread those TIPS).
    2. Is that last picture of Souka from Gadget Trial? (Yes, I still play it out of boredom… though it quickly turns me off because the artillery is broken… in a bad way).

  30. Oh, and according to a recent TV spot, season 2 of Zero no Tsukaima will be airing… next tuesday.

  31. Speaking of which…anybody know a good source for checking airing times in Japan for anime/TV in general?

  32. I loled at the the transformers quotes.
