mine is a drill that fast forwards

There’s really nothing this new season that I’m looking forward to more than Time Slip Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

I’m pumped. I’m excited. I feel like Borat at the Tour de France. You can’t bribe me off of Simon, Nia, and Yoko even with Siesta’s meidoness, Mion’s melonpan, or whatever else is flavor of the month. One thing for sure, Gurren Lagann has the chance to close out one of the most entertaining series this side of Harriet Susan Meyers.

I haven’t really been that interested in the new season. I started watching a lot of the shows for the sake of an upcoming thin slicing post, but nothing I’ve seen so far has come close to Gurren Lagann or Guardian of the Sacred Spirits. It’s beginning to look pretty average, without any Touken Gettan or Perfect Girl Evolution atrociously bad shows (yes, these shows are bad… I do realize that they do have fans, but so do the Charlotte Bobcats and Detroit Lions). It’s also probably not a good thing that a moe blob that beam spammed entertained me more than anything else so far.

Meanwhile, Guardian of the Sacred Spirits is coming out of its filler episodes and looking very intriguing and feisty. Lucky Star is being Lucky Star… that is until it got pushed to the next level with Taniguchi’s antics. If you spun of Taniguchi and Lucky Channel as a new show for summer 2007, it would tentatively be thin sliced at #1. But, most of all, all the mo goes to Gurren Lagann. It made the audacious decision to jump forward in time (while it could easily have filled the first season with 6-7 more episodes of filler and put Time Slip as a second season) and try to cram in a seemingly hugely eventful final arc. It’s either going to be genius on Gainax’s part or another Kare Kano/Eva-styled conclusion disaster for Gainax. There’s no in-between. But even with their poor record, I’m feeling strangely optimistic about how everything will turn out… if Peyton Manning can win a big championship game, Gainax can close out a series properly.

With that said, RIP Nia. After seeing that engagement ring on her finger, she’s not going to live. Either some bad guy is going to kill her and awaken a lethargic spirit within Simon or Yoko’s just going to put a bullet through her head. Gurren Lagann just doesn’t feel like a story that will end happily ever after… it’s going to be bittersweet– victory with a cost. Pity though, because she’s looking pretty damn good in the production stills at the end of the recent recap episode. Take away the ridiculous “plus” effects from her, and she wins the Most DFC crown. It’s kinda weird. When Kamina died, I was almost incredulous that they wanted him out of there just to introduce some cheesy moe girl… well, it kinda worked. Simon and Kamina were getting, uh, too close for comfort, and Nia ends up being the rebound girl. Yoko did end up getting screwed (or not, depending on literacy usage) by the turn of events, but, in the end, Nia became the evolutionary Kamina. Kamina took Simon as far as he could, but with Kamina there, Simon was always somewhat boxed in. When Kamina left, Simon was still in that box, maybe even more boxed in, and it was Nia who egged him out of it. With the new arc coming, I can see a lot of dynamics changing and a lot of characters not exactly the same as before, but I’m pretty damn confident that no matter 7 years or 70 passes, Nia will be Nia. And maybe getting over her is the last step of Simon’s evolution.

  1. Word.

  2. I hope there are no Gurren manga-reading spoiler-jerks out there, ready to tell us who lives & who dies at the end of Harry’s epic adventures this awesome series…

    Assuming the manga is finished.
    I’m not checking; I’m too lazy! ;)

  3. Glad to see that you’re still keep up with GL. Would love to hear your comment on episode 15. :D

  4. If the first three minutes of episode 1 are anything to go by, this new arc is going to be epic. I can’t remember how many times I’ve re-watched that opening scene.

    >> Assuming the manga is finished.

I don’t think there is a manga. As far as I’m aware it’s all original material.

  5. There is no manga so I just give Harry Potter spoilers.

    Spoiler: Rocks Fall, Everyone dies.

  6. Damn, I had a good bit written about Touka Gettan and Sola, but I forgot to fill spam protection and all the text went to bit heaven… I’ll just condense it and say that Touka Gettan is good though I can’t explain why, and Sola started average but got better (waiting for subs of the final ep though). Also, summer season’s most pleasant surprise, so far, has been Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

  7. As I said before, Gainax’s previous original work was KonoMini. There’s no rational reason to believe that Gurren Lagann can break the Gainax curse, but if Peyton Manning can win the Super Bowl, if Jeff Weaver can win a World Series game, and if a Frenchman can be named NBA Finals MVP, anything is possible. Even seeing a Tour de France won by an Asian.

  8. lol @ last ref :)
    OD hellya

  9. The only Gaimax curse is shitty endings … Mahoromatic have a “good ending” except by the fact the ending is disjointed from the series and we have to wonder about why the 2nd season was done in the first place.

What I fear is that Lagann does well (and have a no shitty ending) and suffers from the Mahoromatic fate of cashing in on the series.

  10. Jason! What were your thoughts on episode 15? We must KNOOOWWWWWWW!!!

  11. Jason! We MUST KNOW what your thoughts on Gurren Lagann 15 were!

…Also, Gainax’s real curse is running out of money by the last episode and having to cheap out.

Episode 13 is already out by Lunar, unless there’s an extra episode I’m missing.

The “new” OP, and following the tradition of giving away plot points in the opening video.
Mass-produced Gurren Lagann and bipolar Nia? Oh shi-

  14. “but nothing I’ve seen so far has come close to Gurren Lagann or Guardian of the Sacred Spirits.”

Claymore, Darker then Black and heroic Age.

I do agree Touka Gettan is a aquire taste. but by focusing on the story you loss sight of the more important stuff::

    Meido
    MILF
    Incest
    Orgy
    TRAP
    YURI
    Sakura Blossems
    Best music this season.

  15. NIA FTW!! I’ll stick by her no matter what!

  16. and here I was waiting for some gem comments about dr. irie dropping from the sky and rena telling keichi it’s ok if he zombifies her.

  17. Well seeing 4Chan tread about episode 17 I can only say … holy crap! this is pure win (of course Gaimax still have about 9 episodes to run out of budget/brainfart).

  18. Well just watched ep 17 raw. And HOLY CRAP. I think my luv for NIA has reached an all new height.

  19. Oops double post but… Gurren Lagann is 27 episodes long (including recap episode). So there’s still 10 more eps for brainfart.

  20. I hope Nia lives, I hope it’s a good ending. I hope for a lot of things, not a lot it comes true. Oiy.

  21. Well after watching ep 17, I could say that Nia is no longer possesses DFC… but is now rather close to a Lacus clone minus the pink hair.

At least Simon is a hundred times more GAR than Kira.

This is my top 5(ish) right now, and all of them are from last season, too.

    1. Guardian of the Sacred Spirit — Mushishi-level aura of quality, and the most gorgeously animated skies ever put on a TV screen. It’s like 30 minutes of Ghibli animation every week, only not boring. Can’t wait for the books to get translated, now that my Harry Potter fix is being removed.

    2. ClayMOAR — Tall, blonde, hot, GAR women with swords and mad skillz that turn into Giger monsters when we get tired of them. This show is a shounen wet dream. I’ve now read the first 7 volumes of the manga, and as awesome as that is, I still like the anime more. Only thing I’m worried about at this point is ADV licensing it and putting the voice cast of PPD! on it.

    3. Darker than BLACK — Some people are more or less calling this Cowboy Bebop II. The simple fact that a lot of them are getting away with it speaks volumes. The fact that it may just have the potential to be better speaks more.

    4. Gurren Lagann — The lack of good subs has tempered my interest, but you’ve already explained why it has the potential to be one of the good kinds of classics, and it all boils down to All-Woman Nia and Beastman Hunter Yoko. If they can avoid the Eva curse, they will probably jump a few spots.

    5. Hayate no Gotoku/Lucky Star — The fact that two injoke-laden comedies, and good ones at that, are this far down on my list may not mean much to any of you, but it amazes me. Just goes to show how good the more serious shows this season are.

Zetsubou Sensei, Doujin Work, and ZnT2 are all looking good, and Killer Lolis II, Umisho, and Potemayo look to be worth the bandwidth each week, but other than that, it’s pretty bleak, and none of these are any threat to crack my top 5.

  23.
Episode 13 is already out by Lunar, unless there’s an extra episode I’m missing.
Indeed it is. I’m waiting on Doremi-Sola since theirs is what I’ve been collecting. back when I was thinking this might be a 26-episode series I chose to get 170mb episodes so I could fit everything onto single DVD (every Lunar .mkv was 230mb+ which is insane, but that’s off-topic). Though I did like where the series was going, it’s not like I need to know RIGHT NOW how it ends. I’m content to wait for the other guys to finish it.

  24. Yes but Gurren Lagann doesn’t have Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei’s “cute Hikikomori in a locker.”

  25.
Yes but Gurren Lagann doesn’t have Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei’s “cute Hikikomori in a locker.”
It doesn’t need a cute hikikomori in a locker! Gurren Lagann has Nia!

  26. Holy crap I watched episode 17 just now and it’s some crazy stuff. The time jump is a HUUUUGE PLUS. Screw Naruto’s time jump, Gurren Lagann’s is made of pure win! Plus, it happened way faster, and much better. Looks like your prediction is coming true as well. All I can tell is I am pumped up for the next episode! God this is epic!

  27. Do you watch the RAWs? No one subs the anime anymore and I’m wondering how everyone else is watching the series.

  28. Bullet Speed Subs subbed Lagann 17 … nobody bother with 16 because its a recap and of course “the licensed” status makes groups not keen on subbing it.

  29. Man, episode 17 was pure awesome!
I have only one request: Please, please, Gainax: let Simon save Nia (or let her save herself, whatever)… You may protract it for a few episodes, but don’t kill her! If you do so, I will personally come to Japan and run amok in you frikkin’ office, understood?!?
    Thank You.

P.S.: More Yoko would be appreciated as well.

  30. I heard somewhere else Nia turns evil. But atleast there is Darry. She got awesome. Just…dammmmmmn~

    I like Touka Gettan D:

  31. Well… She does. But It seems that she is overpowered by some program / external power… she looked kinda scared when it happened. I hope they find a way to get her back to normal, sniff.

  32. Hey, I used the tag, but… it doesn’t appear to work (at least fo me). Sorry about that.

  33. Seirei no Moribito is awesome. Only complain I have is I half expected GITS Motoko’s VA to be Balsa’s VA as well. Too bad she isn’t but Balsa’s current VA isn’t half bad.

I need to play Touka Gettan game first b4 I watch it. I try to make it a point to play the games first b4 watching the animes.

There are subs by anonymous for Gurren Lagann up to 15. None yet for ep 17 I think.

  34. With the new arc coming, I can see a lot of dynamics changing and a lot of characters not exactly the same as before, but I’m pretty damn confident that no matter 7 years or 70 passes, Nia will be Nia. And maybe getting over her is the last step of Simon’s evolution.

You have no idea just how eerie this accurate prediction is. Jason, you have got to watch the new episode ASAP. Goddamn Rossiu…
