Harry Potter dies. Nia dies. Maebara dies. Henrietta dies. Shizuru dies. Balsa dies. Luffy dies. Optimus Prime dies. Spider pig dies. Spike dies. Konata dies.

(Just kidding. April Fool’s! But it’s July… OH SHI-! HARRY!)

Blah. Kinda boring episode… too many themes going on (cherry festival, starting new year, April Fool’s) and not enough time spent on any one. This episode felt more like one of those random Keroro episodes that stars Gogoro or something… in other words, breaktime. The unequivocal highlights were, of course, the various insert songs. You pretty much knew that God Knows was going to make an appearance, either through Taniguchi’s singing or otherwise, but it was pretty weird to see the Lucky Star girls at the Haruhi live event. The Fate/Stay Night and Da Capo ones were more unexpected, but it was awkwardly hilarious to see Konata cosplay the Da Capo game opening.

Depending on which feed of Lucky Star, the OP was different. The HD feed has the normal OP. The SD feed changes the beginning dialogue to the one with LOL FANG-SENSEI.

(Is it just me, or does Kagami’s wardrobe look more and more like a guy’s?)

image

The first time I watched this episode, I thought Kagami was saying, “Don’t worry, I have one” and that she was holding up a condom. Sometimes, anime is better enjoyed not subtitled and not properly understood. I can probably say the same about this blog.

(Yes, the Kagami “Yes I have a condom” face needs to be inducted into the pantheon.)

image

Overwhelmed Konata?!? Isn’t this a doomsday scenario like when pigs fly, hell freezes over, or the Cubs win a World Series?

(Loved Kagami’s and Tsukasa’s outfits at the concert. Loved how Kagami kept eyeing Konata. Loved how unrealistic it is to see a row of schoolgirls at a Haruhi live event when it should have been a Hooters-class sausage fest.)

image

Seiyuu paradox! Here’s some bonus scenes from the Haruhi production omake where Aya Hirano tours Kyoto’s studios. The picture that she gets of Haruhi and herself is really cute. But the best part of the live event has to be the conversation afterwards praising the MC… which happens to be Taniguchi. He’s too pimp. He’s turning into the Samuel L. Jackson of the anime world.

image

An uncentered camera is fine too. At first I thought that this was from the viewpoint of Konata’s dad for some reason.

image

There’s a great article in the current issue of Popular Science that details just how bad pollution is in China today. The startling figure is that almost half a million deaths a year are attributable to poor air quality, and it makes you wonder how many years you’re scraping off your own life by living somewhere like LA or Houston that has moderately poor air. Most of the poor air is caused by Chinese factories making cheap products for export, i.e shit everyone in the developed world buys daily vs. poor air quality in the west which is more of automobiles and power plants. The thing is… everyone featured in that article wore masks and goggles like Konata’s dad. Is it just a matter of time before people in LA start wearing face masks matter-of-factly?

image

The cute ones will always stab you in the back first. Rena… why do you have that knife out? Wait? Wha-! NOOOOOOOOOO!

image

W00t! God Knows Haruhi figure! It only adds to the awesomeness of the figure that the unlicensed, fan developed figure has become such an icon that Kyoto stuck it in the 26 episode long infomercial for Haruhi Suzumiya otherwise known as “Lucky Star.”

(Andohbytheway, I can’t believe Konata isn’t like keeping that figure in a glass case a la Robo and his robots.)

image

Kagami’s and Tsukasa’s family has some talent. Now there’s a lucky dad. And did I hear Belldandy as their mom?

(Bah, easy. It’s Fermat. Any engineer who has plowed through Feynman Lectures in their spare time instead of less [read “any”] dorky pursuits should know this. In that case, Kagami probably knew the answer.)

image

A sleepy Tsukasa is fine too. Man, I’m so tempted to toss up a “Sleepy Tsukasa vs. Sleepy Nayuki, Dr. Jack style” post. Please stop me.

image

Drugged out Konata 4tl. My gawd, she looks horrible. She’s one sharp object away from appearing in episode four of Higurashi Kai.

(Or maybe this is Kyoto trying out their zombie designs for High School of the Dead! Can you imagine a more awesome pairing? Kyoto and HSotD! I vote for this. Screw Haruhi, FMP, and Clannad. I demand Kyoto to start work on HSotD. Hell, if Zombie Nayuki and Zombie Konata show up in cameos all the better… though I’d be interested in how Kyoto works in the zombie orgy party bus subplot. I swear, that manga…)

image

ZOMG more characters. I think Kyoto has a thing for characters with fangs. I hope their next project is a Tsukihime remake… I mean, come on! It’s been at least four years since the original… waaaaaaay overdue for a remake.

(Though knowing Kyoto, instead of a lame and non-hawt sex scene between Bumstead and Shiki, we’re going to get Taniguchi singing Mottoke! Sailor Fuku…)

image

To whomever makes the Churuya 4koma, the anime world desperately needs one styled after Kuroi-sensei, even more so than a half-decent Type/Moon anime conversation sex scene. Instead of smoked cheese, LOL FANG-SENSEI could be gunning for Christmas cake like how NBA fringe players gun for stats during Vegas Summer League.

image

The odds that Yukata will turn into Green Haired Yuki Nagato’s lesbian stalker has been taken off of the books in Vegas. Cannot be wagered.

(Can someone who does read Lucky Star manga tell me if Green Haired Yuki Nagato was an avid reader while not talking much in the manga? Or is just another example of Lucky Star‘s transformation from fringe otaku being otaku series into a 26 episode long infomercial for Haruhi Suzumiya?)

image

Gotta love Konata’s Da Capo sequence. If anything, if you can parody an anime that featured a panty shot in the first scene of the OP, you gotta do it. I think. Though I enjoy the typical Kyoto touches, like making the pattern on Nemukonata’s bag the cat from Lucky Star‘s eyecatches.

image

Judging by the ribbons, it would go Nemo -> Sakura -> Nayuki All-Star Kotori -> Moe. Yes, even Kyoto shortchanged Yoriko. Yoriko!!!!! Is it scarier that this sequence was the most moe Konata has ever been, or it it scarier that it was moe because of Da Capo? Or is it scariest because I knew all the girls from Da Capo based off of their ribbon style? Don’t answer that one.

image

Boring Lucky Channel. You know it’s a subpar episode when even Lucky Channel doesn’t make you up like a jolt of Starbuck’s sumatra blend.

image

But Taniguchi saves the show. Seriously, they should just spin off “Taniguchi being Taniguchi.” I think this clip just shows his improv ability and his tremendous intentional unintentional comedy factor. I think I might watch this over Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. If animated Taniguchi is turning into Samuel L, then live action Taniguchi is best described as William Shatner on a pufferfish high. Tremendous. Loved the lyrics too… “Mi-mi-miracle! Minorun-run!” I give this a richly deserved a^n + b^n = c^n with n>2 out of 5.

well, not so much a reader though she is a model student, but definitly not talking much
in Vol 4 there are more strips showing her without dialog than with

and the crazy female doujin artist (Tamura Hiyori) in Yutaka and Minami’s class draws lesbian doujin’s of them…. hope it comes with the DVD set

  2. Wow. Only one other comment so far? Everyone must still be stuck trying to make heads or tails of the Fermat Theorem wiki page.

    Mathematics FTW!

  3. however in character descrption (by crazy doujin artist) does list reading as her prime interest

  4. Wow, how ironic that I finish the first season of Da Capo two days before this episode aired, me and Lucky Star have this connection I tell ya.
Having a tsukihime remake would be nice but I would rather have kyoto do Kagetsu Tohya, I need to go back and find the fate/stay reference you said there was.
I loved the entire scene with the april fools jokes back and forth, is sinister Miyuki another form of Moe? I figure seeing how we got like, what.. 10 eps of kareoke? and now a few eps of Taniguchi kareoke if this is a pattern I wonder what we’re going to get next, they might as well dress the Lucky star girls up in costumes from various harem animes and re-enact the OP’s for those animes.
Oh well, another great episode, back to Da Capo Second Season.

  5. Looks like I missed the second and more obvious Da Capo reference, having never played the game (I don’t speak Eleven), I just wondered what they were referencing to. :P For those who haven’t watched DC, the first reference was Konata coughing up petals (a relevant DC plot point). I must’ve slept through part of the episode though as I didn’t catch any FSN references, gotta go see through it again – and maybe I’ve slept through earlier parts as well because I don’t recall noticing that Kiddy Grade poster on Konata’s wall before, either. Overall, I thought this was an amusing episode, the wild-haired LOL-FANG SENSEI was worth the price of admission alone, as well as Taniguchi’s antics. But who were the people on the next episode preview? My anime-fu is too weak to recognise them.

  6. Argh, I forgot to mention this above but for me the highlight of the episode seemed to be Konata’s “unique”, I had to pause for a moment to laugh at that. I guess the mental overlay nearly-polar opposites of Yuki and Konata was too much.

  7. A sleepy Tsukasa is fine too. Man, I’m so tempted to toss up a “Sleepy Tsukasa vs. Sleepy Nayuki, Dr. Jack style” post. Please stop me.

    Stop you? I’m waiting…

    DOOOOOOOOO IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT.

  9.
My anime-fu is too weak to recognise them.
Tsukasa’s family, to be specific: father > eldest sis > 2nd sis > mother > father
names can be matched on the credit

  10.
Having a tsukihime remake would be nice but I would rather have kyoto do Kagetsu Tohya,
A Kagetsu Tohya anime? Oh man, that would be like another Higurashi except instead of a reset every three or four episodes it’d be a reset every five minutes. Or they could stretch out one of the side stories to fill a season. Like, say, Flower of Thanatos. 13-26 episodes of Shiki x Hisui x Kohaku action anyone?

  11. This show needs more Konata x Kamagi yuri overtones.
    Like, right now.
I’m gonna keep watching it because something has to occur at some point…

  12. >>> A sleepy Tsukasa is fine too. Man, I’m so tempted to toss up a “Sleepy Tsukasa vs. Sleepy Nayuki, Dr. Jack style” post.

    Go! Go! Jason Go!

  13. You know… the fandom is looking too much into episode 15 sequences between Kagami and Konata, true to be told it may has something behind but nothing more than speculations. Who knows, maybe Kyoto would follow the fandom this time…

You freak me out Jason; how can you keep in your mind all the Da Capo girls with just their ribbons; I only recognize Nemu and Kotori. Creepy, very creepy

Holy crap, did you seen episode 16 yet? If you were speaking of a 26-episode series to promote Haruhi Suzumiya; I think Kyoto was listening or reading your blog recently

  14.
Holy crap, did you seen episode 16 yet? If you were speaking of a 26-episode series to promote Haruhi Suzumiya; I think Kyoto was listening or reading your blog recently
just finish dl it… will check it out once done play starcraft with friends

  15. Yes, that IS Kikoku Inoue’s voice in there, which automatically makes Kagami’s dad the Luckiest Man on Earth. Also, is it just me, or was Kuroi-sensei’s arrival and collapse a parody of Azumanga, with a similar arrival in disarray from Yukari-sensei?

By the way, Ep 16 looks very, very interesting, for those who loved the live show here…

  16. A Lucky-Starred Aya Hirano is fine too.
What do you call an Aya x Haruhi x Konata situation? Double selfcest?

  17.
To whomever makes the Churuya 4koma, the anime world desperately needs one styled after Kuroi-sensei
Oh, they have been drawing 4komas about Lucky Star… though it’s mostly centers around Kagamin- who is oddly drawn as a piglet.

  18. A sleepy Tsukasa is fine too. Man, I’m so tempted to toss up a “Sleepy Tsukasa vs. Sleepy Nayuki, Dr. Jack style” post. Please stop me.

Why you so stupid? You not hungry for loli. You hungry for Sleepy Nakuyi……I mean Hot Pocket!

  19. @ Syaoran Li: Ah but you see KyoAni does listen to the fans for their “inspiration”. They like to tow the line, hence Lucky Star becoming Haruhi Season 1.5. Me thinks they should have gone with Haruhi Season 2 this summer instead, as they just can’t seem to wait. As for Lucky Star Episode 16, nothing we haven’t seen before in terms of the Haruhi references. The Hare Hare Yukai Dance [Check], Sugita Tomokazu and Chihara Minori playing themselves playing their respective characters [Check], Aya Hirano morphing into Haruhi as Konata for a brief period to shoot one liners from the series [Check], Anime Tenchou popping up to promote some product relating to Haruhi [Check]. Same ol’ Same ol’.

  20. Well, Prime does die in the real Transformers movie. Talk about crushing a kid’s hero. DAMN YOU MEGATRON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahem…. wait until you see Lucky Star 16 Jason. ;)

  21. HOLYHELLJASONWTF?
I was Taking a shower just sitting around and I was making my list of remakes KyoAni should work on and Tsukihime was first. GET OUT OF MY HEAD, JASON!

Kagamin-boo! I can’t remember the original item… it’s based off this black(or white?) square pig character that is put to pens and little dolls and stuff. The name escapes me now, I’ll repost the answer when I find the name of the character.

  23.
(Is it just me, or does Kagami’s wardrobe look more and more like a guy’s?)
Good observation. I skipped through some recent episodes, and she seems to have several outfits that include a tie of some sort, and a few shirts with buttons on boys’ side (most evidently, 7th picture from top in this blog post). Granted, that stuff could be hand-me-downs from her father but one would assume they’d go to her elder sisters, size-wise.

  24. At least we know who is the tomboyish of the group ^_^

    >>Getta_Wing; you’re right about that, but alwyas is good to remind it.

    >>denoted; Peter Cullen thinks teh same. he never knew how popular were Optimus Prime until he dies in the 1986 movie; because the studio never gave him the letters from the kids adressed to Optimus Prime.
