How could a well-thought out, entertaining blog post, something I’ve only heard about on TV or in newspapers exist here? Then, what do you call this? A flaming bag of…

image

Much like the “Delicious Strategy” episode of Rozen Maiden, this is a great episode that really shows the tremendous upside potential of this Goodbye, Mr Despair. Really enjoyed this episode just because of the tremendously oddball harem that Pink Supervisor is assembling, and, guess what? That name makes perfect sense now. Pink? Supervisor? Now that’s the name of a man-pimp.

The thing that bothers me most of most other Shaft creations seem toned down, and it works. When there’s less randomly, whatever we get seems more enjoyable. Hopefully Shaft and Kumeta can keep the quality level up and not let this series degenerate into a series of sight gags.

Dark Clouds of Despair

image

Remember when I said previously that I’m glad I didn’t see Mesousa? Well, he’s back. Everytime they cut away from Chie’s office, her office trimmings get jumped. Mesousa appears once. So does that NORAD from Galaxy Angels.

image

Best line: “The Pied Piper of Hamelin!” I almost laughed up my pancreas. Genius, apt, and horrifying on so many levels.

image

Second best moment: “Orange-kun!” I don’t think it fits with the show as the comedy of the show itself can carry it without cheap parody gags, but it was just so random I had to laugh. Now, please, Shaft, keep this to a minimum and let the natural story shine, please. It’s like getting a slab of prime Kobe beef… sometimes, it’s best not to mess around too much with it.

image

“What if I had died!?”

Yes, Pink Supervisor is becoming the evolutionary Kenny. Though he’s more anti-Kenny as he avoids death rather than just die… SZS is more like Unbreakable, only with more moe stalkers.

image

There was a Simpson’s episode where they were making a reality TV show of the Simpson family, and Lindsey Neagle (or one of her henchmen) remarked that Homer “goes to pieces over the smallest things.” Perfect description of Pink Supervisor. He’s the evolutionary Homer Simpson and anti-Kenny.

image

I really enjoyed how when facing both problem students, Kafuka is in completely denial of the problem, suggests a completely oddball and inappropriate solution, and it kinda works. Only it results in the girls falling madly in love with Pink Supervisor. Haven’t had this much fun since Megumi and Miki squared off in a makeshift boxing ring.

image

Remember when I wrote about how this reminded me of Welcome to the NHK? It’s almost magical, but we have two new moe modes in hikikomori and stalking this episode. The hikikomori portion was hilarious, and I knew that as soon as Pink Supervisor hit on her with the “You’re beautiful!” line, she’d be in his wheelhouse. She looks a lot like Mutio from Blue Submarine #6.

(The dolls? The not letting her leave? The near hanging? Genius. Pure genius. Misaki should have tried this out.)

image

The stalker portion was pretty fun too. What I didn’t get was after Pink Supervisor ripped out his phone lines, how’d he still get faxes?

(Why does all of his solutions involve death… ? Oh wait, nevermind.)

image

Yeah, no doubt about it. She’s Monk’s kid. It is fun watching her overload though. But I want to see her overload with a sharp object…

(Can someone explain to me the WTF of the “Tea Ceremony Club” thing around the 13 minute mark? The one that contained all the phallic imagery I’m desperately trying to burn away from my corneas with Mikuru fanservice right now? Thanks.)

image

ZOMG! That pose again!

image

A warning shot at Lucky Star? Ooooooooh.

image

So right now, we have a hikikomori, a stalker, a OCD compulsive, and the evolutionary Ahoge in Pink Supervisor’s harem. What’s next, an emo melonpanriffic blonde? Is this more or less unbalanced that Maebara’s? Or Athrun’s?

Silver Lining

I’m paying closer attention to Chie’s outfits. Not only does it signal that more shows are following Kyoto’s lead and mixing up outfits, she’s kinda sneaky hawt. Plus, she’s the only sane one in the show. That counts for something, doesn’t it?

  1. dang jason, really rolling out them posts…

frankly i’m still not convinced about the style, as all the humor (sans orange-kun) has been unrelated with the forced randomness. beyond a quirky way to, i dunno… draw attention to itself, what are the merits of this style?

minor gripe, at any rate. the second ep really kicked it up a notch and got me a lot more interested. love listening to chie sensei have that ‘dont give a damn on the outside but actually psychoanalyzing you to hell on the inside’ tone in her voice.

According to AS forum that’s a reference to some other show:

Never heard of it before though, and it certainly had me confused in the actual episode.

  3. “Her love is too heavy!”
What’s not to like in this episode. Hikikomoris, stalkers, obsessive-compulsives, and who knows what to come. Oddball harem of the decade! :D

  4. Was still not sure if I was gonna follow this after episode 1. Now I have no choice. This is teh awesome.

Actually, dint’ JC Staff start the trend in 2005, switching the charecter’s outfits per episode in Loveless?
Then again, as a heterosexual male, i have no business being aware of anything concerning Loveless, so if we all agree to live in blissful ignorance and pretend all good things originated with Kyoto, that’s fine too.

unless you watched ep 3 that is

  8. Just watched the first two of these last night. Soooo good. I didn’t bother pausing to read the brightly colored rants in the opening credits – are they worth going back for?

  9. Didn’t the characters change outfits in most (if not all) episodes of Strawberry Marshmallow (Summer 2005) also?

I was going to post a troll comment to the effect of “There is only one good new show this summer – Potemayo!” but now I’m watching the Pink Supervisor like everyone. Mr. Despair does have great potential.

    Although Potemayo is still amazing.

  10. How can a hikkikomori be so moe??!!

  11. 3rd last picture: did one of those pictures involve someone flipping me a bird at all the viewers? Even more worrying, do japanese kids consider flipping off cool? And is it mainly the fault of the transformers movie?

  12. The fact that her name is Kafka turns me on.

  13.
How can a hikkikomori be so moe??!!
She’s hikikomoé!

She is mad hawt. And don’t forget PPD! (also SHAFT, of course) switched up Becky’s outfit at least once an episode.

  14. while we’re on the subject of costume changing, the first in my memory to do that was pita ten (awesome show), which was back in 2002. pretty sure it wasn’t an original idea even back then, though.

  15. This series rules… maybe our Summer relief

  16. i found it interesting how the hikkikomori girl had a uniform from hidamari sketch in her room. wonder if anyone else caught that

Doesn’t one of the scens they flash at you during the creepy ED include a blood-soaked Chiri-lookalike standing in a train compartment littered with corpses? Oh SHI-

The space story from the 2nd episode’s OP had me laughing a lot.

  19. I’m paying closer attention to Chie’s outfits.

    Stay away, she’s mine!

  20.
Stay away, she’s mine!
Lies! I called dibs during the first episode!

  21. Many thanks, Kunio-kun! I was having trouble stepping through them.

  22. Methinks its time to update your harem matrix with the new animes. I wonder what strange categories you have to introduce for this ;p

  23. Following CrasHthe2nd’s Youtube link, plugging the show title into the Japanese Wikipedia, and asking Google to translate, I get this: http://translate.google.com/tr.....%25A0%25B4
Apparently that opening was used from 1981 to 1995. I think Timotei is still the older reference.

  24. Really funny to see that mister pink supervisor is the only normal person while his students are all complete train wrecks.

Yeah, I’d write better and longer comments if my Engrish was better. Seriousely.

  25. I can’t QUITE bring myself to watch the anime, as I’m already busy justifying why I’m keeping up the often medicore mahwah of it. ._.

(in the voice of a tallest)
    It’s not mediocre, it’s artistic!

I’m on my old CRT monitor now. My new LCD died after “Makoto Itou” from School Days made me punch a hole in it. Subs for ep 3 now! I’m forced to watch all that other crap meanwhile and I cant take much more weak male leads!

Actually, after seeing episode 3, I’d say he’s exactly half right. ^_^

Anybody else notice that the bandaged girl is voiced by Mikuru’s seiyuu? I didn’t until I saw the credits.

Oh, yeah. Translated credits. a.f.k. FTW!
