shakugan no shana second 1

Much like Yuji stuck in a loop of his memories, I feel the same way writing this post. Shana? Wilhelmina? Melonpan? Deja vu.

(Obligatory OH GOD SHANA IS HOT or the more modern and blasphemous OH KYRIOS MELONPAN IS DELICIOUS.)

This is quite possibly the greatest setup for a first episode to a sequel. Not only does it feel like a valid continuation from episode 24, the base plot actually incorporates recapping what happened in the original series. I feel like I’m caught back onto speed with all things Flame Haze and progressed the plot. Hurrah!

Unfortunately, there isn’t much for me to add since not much happens. Everyone’s back, and not much is different. And this “trapped in one’s own little world” motif seems so… so… recently done before. Deja vu! The Yuji / Shana / Yoshida love triangle is still the less fanservicy version of the Saito / Louise / Siesta love triangle, and Shana’s still munching on melonpan while spewing “URASAI!” Deja vu!

Melonpanriffic

Glad to see some things never change. I much rather have a melonpan-munching, “URASAI!” spouting Shana than the horror that is Louise.

Yoshida’s the less slutty Siesta. The parallels. Oh the parallels…

Yuji, though, is the anti-Saito. Instead of being constantly in trouble for the perceived, real, and imagined womanizing, Yuji is extremely focused on the task on hand. Hopefully this time around, he’ll focus more on things other than “ZOMG I’M GONNA DISAPPEAR!” Nevertheless, he’s still in an upper tier when it comes to male anime heroes.

Rena… is that you… ?

Shakugan no Shana has the greatest collection of immortal loli villains ever assembled.

Why am I interested in this series? Well, I liked the original. The love triangle between Yuji / Shana / Yoshida is fantastic, especially if you toss Ike, Hecate, and newcomer Pheles into the mess. And, of course, more Wilhelmina.

  1. im a tad bit disappointed by op/ed songs. : [

  2. Wouldn’t Kazumi be more like Henrietta?

  3. Everytime I see Yoshida I just think of that girl from Potemayo who looks the EXACT SAME.

  4. And has the same voice actress.

  5. i beg to differ on the OP/ED. as they said in a certain movie, “A good start.”

  6. Quit lying, Jason. You’re in it for the Meido and DFC.

    Yup, those are his readers.

    There’s two schools of thought on this – one says it’s inherently boring to do a recap, the other just enjoys the meido, and other anime fixations which get thrown around with great abandon here. Less Yoshida would do just as well as some things, though. That, and more Shana.

  8. Yeah I’ve been awaiting this sequel for a long time now, i love the op/ed and I could’ve sworn I saw a a better animation quality throughout the ep. Definitely my favorite of the new season, sorry Kyoto i’ll have to abandon you just this once.

    i would bet on it, seeing as how they must have been making good money off of the first season and the movie.

    Am I the only one that thinks that, with that expression, the new “immortal loli villain” looks like Guchuko? Especially in the above screencap.

  11. Seriously though, Jason: there’s something very wrong with the quoting going on. I’m not sure what’s causing the weird quote attributions, though.

  12. I think it will be love quadrilateral as Ike seems to have feelings for Yoshida.

  13. Word Press at my post again…. The sleep deprived college student is not amused……

    Random incoherent mumbling aside, it looks like our favorite melon pan munching killer loli is back. Now if she’d just grow a pair of delicious melon pan…..not that I have any problems with the DFC mind you. (I was in the Nia camp from day one after all)

  14. Recaps are never good, espacially when they´re the whole episode. Nice having Shana and everyone back, but for the love of all that is Holy, why oh why do they trash the second season by going Naruto/Bleach/Dragonball on me?

    I just hope this is a one of a time accurance, but then again, from the preview of the next episode…

    How true, how true…

  16. I think it’s a testament to the awesomeness of Potemayo that we start comparing Shana to it. I’m hoping with all of you that J.C.Staff can make Shana II a worthy successor to both the first season and Potemayo.

    They started out great. If a recap is necessary, it should be done this well: with brand new, higher quality animation for all the flashback scenes, and a different concept behind the flashbacks.

    It is strange seeing the fansub translation convention again after watching through the (actually really good, except for one or two things) Geneon R1 version of the entire first season. Nevertheless, the fansubs are still great.

    Welcome back to the Flame-Haired Blazing-Eyed Hunter, the Midnight Lost Child, and of course the Specialist of Everything!

    More like fansub transliteration in parts, but I know what you mean. Having never seen the Shana fansubs, and only watching the R1 DVDs, it took a second or two at times to realize what they were talking about with the original Japanese romanizations instead of the translated terms I was used to. “Reiji Maigo” (“Midnight Lost Child” in the dub) was probably the most jarring example. The “recap” (that wasn’t) actually helped me in that respect, as it’ll now be easier to follow things as they get into the true meat of the story over the next few episodes.
    And I totally agree on the quality of the Geneon/Ocean Shana dub. It wasn’t the best dub I’ve encountered in the last year—that would be Black Lagoon, also by Geneon and Ocean, with Mushishi close behind (FUNimation? Excellent dub? Who’da guessed it?)—but it was still quite good, although I did prefer the original Japanese (URUSAI! URUSAI! URUSAI!).

  18. What were the last words Shana whispered in Saitos… errr Yuujis ears before the world ended? Let’s help him!

    * I love you, my hachimitsu kuma
    * Uruchai, uruchai, uruchai!
    * Believe in me who believes in you
    * Uguu~
    * I have control, Allelujah!
    * Scramble the valkyries!
    * In Melonpan we trust
    * USO DA!

  19. I can’t decide whether making the characters fight a recap-demon who all but admits she has no purpose but to cause a recap and die is genius or madness. The line is as thin as they said.

    Ever time I see Yoshida I wonder when the Wolkenritter are going to show up. If people are going to go digging through Yuji’s chest for magic treasure he deserves to at least have it be a hot chick.

  20. Frakenstein’s Clare: I’m not really that familiar with Mare, but given the fact she’s the main antagonist of the Shana PS2 game, she’s far from a ‘minor’ Denizen. Tsk, Pheles I can comment on, since she was in the novels, but Mare is drawing a big ‘?’ from me.

  21. >> What were the last words Shana whispered in Saitos… errr Yuujis ears before the world ended? Let’s help him!
    Very well…
    * You are already dead
    * Auauauau~
    * Gokigenyo
    * You are the bone of my sword
    * This is SPARTAAAAA!
    * Ecchi no baka!
    * The plot has left me in DESPAIR!
    * Fade in!
    * You are just a homo side character!
    * KHHHAAAAAAAAAAANNN!

  22. I can tell already that my feelings on this are going to be a bit mixed. One one hand, I like the world and the visual style. On the other hand, its a high-school romantic angst drama where the girls are drawn like twelve year olds and nothing seems to get resolved. Sure, I’ll go “Awww, cute” the first few times a character isn’t able to admit their true feelings or whatever but that doesn’t last all that long. And if the female characters had more curves I could at least have a little guilty pleasure that way, but no such luck.

    Oh, and is it just me or does not only the body on the floor look like Rena but the swiftly dissintegrating villainess also looks a lot like Ho-chan.

  23. I rather enjoyed this episode, I was soo tempted to make a gif of Shana’s urasai, was so cute :D

  24. Pardon my ignorance, but can anyone tell me who the hell Pheles is? the green haired chick in the opening?
