derailed by wong?

Good or bad thing that I’ve found more Wong fanservice in the past 24 hours than I have of Darry in the past 24 days?

Before I begin, I have five quick thoughts:

1. Hinagiku’s Utena parody was awesome. Shion and the Superintendent is uber creepy consider Hayate‘s audience. If they can have heavily implied misdealing between an adult woman and a middle schooler, they can toss us some Maria fanservice. I’m outraged.

2. Do you remember Shaq destroying the competition in Orlando? And then winning the three titles for the Lakers? Well, Nanoha is kinda like that. The first series was great and had a lot of potential. That would be Orlando Shaq. A’s bumped it to a new VITA-CHAN FATE-CHAN level and that’s like the pinnacle much like LA Shaq. Now StrikerS is prodding… there’s some good moments, but they’re few and far between… much like Shaq’s non-injured days for Miami.

3. Fujishima-san must be hard up for cash. Was You’re Under Arrest Full Throttle really necessary? And why get rid of Saori?!? She was one of the more interesting characters. But I gotta hand it to him… YUA and A!MS are still alive and well and are two of the only franchises that have been around since this blog started.

4. I am fascinated by the sheer amount of fan art out there for Gurren Lagann, yet so little Darry. I see more Nia now than Yoko. Don’t even get me started on Wong. (There’s probably more fan art out there now featuring the 00 characters in Loveless-type poses. ~uguu~)

5. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei fell off a cliff faster than USC after Stanford. I will not trust Shaft again unless than pull off a Gurren Lagann-type resurrection.

Well, onto the feedback…

IKnight: Given the recent rapid flow of posts, would it be fair to say that AoMM hasn’t been so much ‘Derailed’ as ‘Inspired’ by Darry?

Season change overs are always the busiest times for me. I tend to toss out the “end of season” and “beginning of season” posts then, and I usually blog less during the middle of a season. I usually write more gimmick posts than I have lately, but recently I just haven’t had the time. It’s been months since the last momentum post, for example. The last top ten post I did was something I had in my queue for a long time and finally used it for my vacation. I really should look into Indian outsourcing options.

Anon: I was wondering if you knew who writes Ani-Nouto. He seems to talk a lot about your blog.

Oh man, I know the secret. Should I give it out? Mmm. Oh hell with it, I’ve kept the secret long enough…. spoilers:

Pete Zaitcev, check out his old LJ’s anime section. It’s great and worth a read.

(The shear irony of an anonymous asking to out another anonymous is so paradoxical, I’m going to watch a few episodes of Umisho to get it out of my head. I’m also delighted at trying to guess his reaction. 17 posts in a row complaining about AoMM? Denial? Hunt me down with his SMB?)

Melonpan: What were the last words Shana whispered in Saitos… errr Yuujis ears before the world ended? Let’s help him!

Melonpan, I loved yours and Northernshadows‘ suggestions, especially “USO DA!” and “THIS IS SPARTAAAA!” Just wanted to drop that love note. <3

Kikimaru: any chance of a quick post (in honour of Gurren Lagann) on the DVD version of ep6? (Yes yes, I realise I’m probably the 100th person to ask this ;)

I kinda alluded to it in my rawr rawr fight the powa post. I don’t have a lot to say about it besides that they pulled a Simpson’s where the only nudity we got was a full frontal shot of Gimmy. I’ll now stab myself with a fork.

Mike: Here’s something I found on the animesuki forums that you might find amusing… “GTA: SA – Kagami and Tsukasa”

I’ve actually received five different e-mails about this, but Mike’s the first so I’ll use his. There are people who have too much time in this world… which qualifies them for either a multiyear contract with the New York Knicks or to be an anime blogger. Hey, speaking of which…

hiero_yo: So instead of ‘Truck Party’ we get ‘Gundam Party’? Still it will be hard to top the unintentional comedy machine that is the New York Knicks.

I love how even Australians are laughing at the Knicks. Maybe I should change this blog’s name to “Pantsu Party”… mmm… mmm… MMMMMMM…

(Uh oh, we’re in the Gundam 00 portion of the post.)

Getta_Wing: Same old typical conversation as usual on this site. Blah Blah Blah, Trainwreck this, blah blah blah, Sunrise sucks that. Jesus Christ! People need to stop with this hackery already and just watch the god damn show.

I thought I was fair in my post and didn’t mention “train wreck” once. The problem is that once you develop a rep, you’re not going to easily get rid of it. For example, there’s an old blog, I think it’s called “Anime on My Mind” or something like that, that complained about how Sunrise butchers shows with cheap formulaic “pops” instead of writing real scripts. It’s going to be hard for “Anime on My Mind” to get over the rep that it treats Sunrise different, when, in fact, that blog was just pointing out the recent consistent failure of Sunrise to tell a good story. Not a great story, just a good story. It’s no different than people wondering if Peyton Manning could win a Super Bowl… he needed to win one to prove everyone wrong, and that’s what Sunrise needs to do… they need to do a great (not just good) job with Gundam 00 to get some rep back.

I also would like to point out that Gainax had a rep for screwing up endings and even has “Gainax ending” meme to show for it, but they dispelled their past rep nicely with Gurren Lagann. Do I think Gundam 00 will be Gurren Lagann? Based on recent history from Sunrise, no. Do I expect an above average mecha series? I hope so. But for Sunrise to really get out of the doghouse, they have to show that they can rise above what they’ve done recently. Or Shaft just needs to suck more and take the attention off of them, kinda like how the Yankees are deflecting attention away from the Truck Party Knickerbockers.

physics152: Solar-powered hummer is hilariously ironic. What’s the mileage in that thing? Stop buying SUVs. They are the new sun-guzzlers. Save the sun.

Loved the comment, physics152. I should have just responded to Getta_Wing with a “It’s hard to take any anime featuring an energy crisis and a Hummer seriously. Same reason I can’t take my governor seriously whenever he talks about greenhouse gas emissions.”

(See! Ah-nauld has rep! He’s going to have to increase my wealth and happiness dramatically if he’s going to make me forget about Collateral Damage, Junior, Last Action Hero, and Kindergarten Cop.)

Xeifa: The entire time I was watching that show I kept thinking back on the conversation between Konata and her dad: even if the franchise pumps out something like Great Detective Gundam or Gundam Murder Mysteries… fans will still watch it out of obligation…

I did find it amusing that the show’s attempting to prove that it’s not a gay show (even though the artist did Loveless) by giving all female characters huge busts.

I think I would watch Detective Gundam. Pretty much all the serial dramas on American TV these days are mysteries, and I’m sick of the rehashed premises for most. It’ll be cool to have a giant mecha solving mysteries.

Though about your gay show point, how do we know that Wong (suspicious name as is), isn’t pulling an Otome wa Boku?

Haesslich: I saw this a few days back. Yes, “The Department of Agriculture is not responsible for Gundam” is quotable.

They should be! Wheat Gundam! Rice Gundam! Kiwi Gundam! And they can probably write a better script than Sunrise.

Tetsui: Okay, the quoting thing isn’t quite working correctly. Sorry about that.

I turned off quoting. WP 2.3 screwed it up even more than before.

Chumara: If I started picking up series like this I would have no time for school or work anymore. If only there was more time in a day.

Yep, these are my readers.

  1. Just pray that Wong doesnt turn into a Mary Sue figure like Lacus. That’s one of the things that bothered me about Seed.

  2. Damn right, the net is overflowed with this…. not tha tI mind of course.

  3. Sasori was also my favorite YUA character… well at least in season 2. Here’s to hoping she’d make a surprise return at some point in the show (and since season 1 got 40ish eps, season 2 got 24 eps, season 3 better have like… 100 eps or something).

There’s a confirmed season 2 for SZS slated spring next year I believe… I’m truely surprised they ended the show at ep 12… I man, there’s 9 volumes (and still ongoing) worth of source material for them to work with.
As for Wong being possibly a man… well… I couldn’t recall the last time I saw a gay Chinese anime character (and I pray to O’Haruhi-sama this won’t be the first).

The Gundam 00 fanarts I’ve been seeing alot on 4chan usually falls down into the two categories: ones of Wong (I actually have that last piece of artwork in my folder- just without clothes), and ones of the purple haired glasses-wearing pilot… drawn as a chick (so I wasn’t the only person who thought he looked like a girl, thank god).

  4. >Gundam 00 fanarts I’ve been seeing alot on 4chan
When did this happen??? The last time I was there it was a string of Rena “Taking You Home!” spamming in different fonts and languages. And trolling of CLANNAD. Speaking of that, where are the KyoAni praising posts, jason? This blog needs more dangos.

I just got my DVDs to work again. All I need to do to resume SEED is 6 and 7, then on my way to find out what’s with the Jesuses and Lacuses and Athruns.

  5. 1. Hinagiku’s Utena parody was awesome

So agreed. I was loling IRL at that scene. Had to pause for a bit to stop laughing.

  6. Wow. Utena reference. Now I feel old for actually remembering when that series was new.

I’ve yet to watch the new Gundam 00, but I’ve officially nicknamed the new protagonist Ritsuna. I can’t look at him without thinking of Loveless.

  7. I’ve seen a *lot* of Darry stuff….just that a lot of it is outright porn, and not ‘fanservice’.

I’m seeing a LOT of ‘homages’ to previous Gundam series’ in 00. Exia seems to have a Minovsky Drive, Kyrios’ waverider mode looks just like the Zetas…’fact, *everything* seems to have a waverider mode…including the Zakus.

What gets me about it though….they can build giant robots. They’re building a space elevator…they have energy-based shields…yet they can’t fit a fusion reactor on a mobile suit? That’s just lame.

  8. Post the covers, they should be tame, right?

…. If not, post them anyway! ^_^

  9. http://derailedbydarry.com/ima.....00/000.jpg

instead of being derail by wong, i rather be smother by wong instead.

  10. What have you done to your site formatting? When I try to open the full version of one of your posts, IE7 dies instantly.

Firefox handles it fine, but it isn’t my regular browser (and won’t become my regular browser).

  11. Sparta?! Nonono, see…
    THIS IS SHANAAAAAA!

    >_>
    <_<
    What?

  12. Ouch. I got totally butchered. Oh well, I guess it’s okay that my name got mutilated. I guess? Man, it’s going to be a tall order to come up with the next catchphrase that… derails Jason so much. Time to get crackin.

I totally agree though, Saori was totally one of the largest selling points of YUA, especially once you were alerted to (insert Star Wars alien admiral voice here) “IT’S A TRAP!”. Hell, the girl they got to play the live action version of her was insanely cute too. And that RARELY happens (cue Negima). (Insert subtle clever reference to Wong being a man here.)

I’ve never been a Gundam fan—far from it—but I think even I’d have to take a look if they ever came out with “Mahou Tantei Gundam ηπ Vista Eternal” (or something similar). Somehow I’m imagining Strike Freedom hiding behind a building speaking into his wrist while the unconscious bumbling detective father of the pilot’s girlfriend “solves” the case. Ironically enough, I’m watcing the recording of tonight’s CSI: NY as I write this…

    (Yes, that is “eta-pi.”)

“Though about your gay show point, how do we know that Wong (suspicious name as is), isn’t pulling an Otome wa Boku?”
Hah! So I’m not the only one sitting here looking at these Wong pictures, comparing them to the fact that character designs for the entire male cast may just be more feminine, and telling myself “Methinks that bustline doth protest too much,” am I?
Probably doesn’t help much that I know so little about this series beyond what the screencaps tell me that when I saw “Derailed by Wong” in my RSS reader I thought it was another Mai Otome post and feared the worst… OTL

Steven Den Beste: “What have you done to your site formatting? When I try to open the full version of one of your posts, IE7 dies instantly.”
Works fine on my IE7, which I’m using to write this. Maybe you’ve got a toolbar that’s bollocksing up the works or you’re running the xp version of IE7 (suggestion: don’t).

“5. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei fell off a cliff faster than USC after Stanford. I will not trust Shaft again unless than pull off a Gurren Lagann-type resurrection.”
Eeh?! That comment has left me in despair!

  15. This may be blasphemous, but I really think Hinagiku should star on her own show instead of continuing the misadventures of our perpetually broke butler. Hayate’s novelty has worn off, to be honest.
    .
On socialite/secret agent Miss Wong, like I said so many times, I can’t take Ryumin seriously because she reminds me of Chao Lingshen. And we know how well she did in Negima.
    .
@ Xeifa: Gay Chinese character? Try Fred Luo from Outlaw Star. Similar role as Ryumin’s, too.

  16. The biggest thing I noticed with all the Wong fanservice is just how bad the majority of it is, especially in the anatomy department. Not just talking about b00bies either, it’s like some of these people forgot how to draw basic forms.

  17. @Pakxenon: I think Jason has enough memes covered that he doesn’t need to fall back on overpraising Kyoani. That would just be a cop out.
