March Madness is coming to an end with only 4 out of 64 competitors left in the fight.
Previous Voting Results
Gurren Lagann becomes the first non-Kyoto Animation series to knock out a Kyoto anime in advancing to the Final 4. In fact, Kyoto is 8-1 vs. non-Kyoto studios. That’s an impressive studio. Haruhi steamrolls Minami-ke to move into the Final 4 as well, and Haruhi boasts an extremely impressive margin of victory in both of its wins.
Final 4
The Final 4 matches will end around 11PM PST on March 21th. The championship match will then begin shortly thereafter. As always, rules are available here. After seeing the lopsided beatdowns the past few rounds, I decided to make things a bit more interesting and make the Final 4 a melee round… vote for 2 out of 4, and the top 2 advance to the championship match. The contenders who absolutely need no introduction…

No. Contest. Haruhi gets one of my votes (as I’m a Haruhiist after all) but I was torn about Gurren and the rest. In the end, I chose Fumoffu, since I prefer a good comedy over action any day.
And the fronter images used, uh… A Kyonko is all fine and well (since genderswaps don’t inhibit snarkyness), but the Dai-Gurren-dan gendershift is… Shall we say, off? Anee-san doesn’t sound as well as Aniki, for example (which seems to be a yakuza term in itself).
Wouldn’t be fair if all the series were by KyoAni now, wouldn’t it?
If Minami-ke didn’t go up against Haruhi and was here, I’d definately vote for them and Haruhi. Again. But I’ll have to go with Haruhi and Fumoffu this round.
Gah, so hard. But Haruhi and Fumoffu are both shows that never slowed down, unlike Gurren Lagann, so my votes go to them.
>Anee-san doesn’t sound as well as Aniki, for example (which seems to be a yakuza term in itself).
Female equivalent of Aniki is Anego, I think. Got to agree though genderbending Gurren Lagann just doesn’t work as well as gender Bending Haruhi.
Clannad higher than Gurren lagann?
Oh my..
Actually, Gurren is leading CLANNAD, but not by much.
On the topic of gender changes…
While genderswaps have been around in Japanese fandom for a while, not every instance works. A personality quirk that might work in one gender might be stupid when transposed to another. Also, there’s the social and interpersonal dynamics as well — in Gurren for example, most of the visible cast is male, so flipping the gender of the characters would make something like Simoun, where almost all the cast are girls (Pax Amazonia, if you will).
The larger the cast, the harder the transition will be. A small, focused group of characters like that in Haruhi, whose archetypes easily shift between genders (a sarcastic person will also be sarcastic, regardless of whether or not they’re a girl or not, while a blockhead will remain a blockhead, etc), make the jump well enough. Not so with something like CLANNAD, for example.
Anyway, I ramble. I’m sure that Haesslich will be on the case if I’m not careful. :)
Hmmm. Bonta-kun and Haruhi. The Gurren may have its points, but Fumoffu made me laugh way too many times to count. Besides we have a theme park mascot with a shotgun using rubber bullets to rescue women. (Besides, where else will you here Chiyo-chan’s voice sound basass?) Fumo Fumo!
I’m not sure what bothers me more, the fact that I expected that top picture, or the fact that I’m comfortable with it…
I like how you didn’t actually have a specific post for Fumoffu and just picked some Yuri fanservice. Though it did mention TSR and hawt twincest.
Hm… Simona sure looks nice…
….
….
….
Please shoot me.
>Anee-san doesn’t sound as well as Aniki, for example
Onee-sama sounds much better. And this way there’s isn’t an OH GEASS NO! moment.
Taltos – “I’m not sure what bothers me more, the fact that I expected that top picture, or the fact that I’m comfortable with it…”
I hesitate to ponder the state of this blog in 12 months.
Now that the J.C.Staff series are no longer in the running, I am interested in the results only because they determine the next banner. And I would prefer a Gurren Lagann banner.
And to those of you who wanted to see Kana succeed in costume-raping Fujioka, here’s a theoretical projection. I guess Asread didn’t have Kana succeed because cross-dressing Fujioka just isn’t as cute or convincing as Mako-cakes. An older boy’s shoulders and knees give him away.
>>Female equivalent of Aniki is Anego, I think. Got to agree though genderbending Gurren Lagann just doesn’t work as well as gender Bending Haruhi.
Could just go with Aneki. It’s fairly uncommon, but the term does exist. Like in the drama “Kikan no Aneki”
I’ve noticed that the sheer amount of win in that poll has stopped it from using the 100% system. How the hell is Haruhi God getting 75 % of the votes and TTGL is getting 54% ….
….oH yeah I forgot. SHIMON make the impossible possible and Haruhi makes the rules. Didn’t think anything could tkae the behemoth Gurren Lagann down but I was wrong….horribly wrong.
Sixten, you completely derailed my day with Fujioka’s theoretical projection.
Just when I think I can START my day on track…derailed…again. What can I say, early morning derailment FTW.
You two are so broken…
Ahh what nasty choices I have to make here! Regardless I’ve cast my lot…
On the genderbending issue, I think Haruhi is working the best, based on evidence I’ve seen on 4chan. Many benders don’t seem to work at all.
The odd percentages no doubt stem from each voting event being counted individually, and each event being able to generate two votes. Thus, Haruhi standing right now at 74% means that many voters have cast it as one of their two choices. The maximum sum of percentages is thus 200%, the difference between that and the actual sum being the percentage of voters who chose to vote for only one series – currently 15%.

This place is starting to get to me, and I don’t even watch Minami-ke….
>> The odd percentages no doubt stem from each voting event being counted individually, and each event being able to generate two votes.
That’s boring. I prefer the concentrated awesomeness theory.
I definitely don’t prefer genderbent characters.
And it’s hard to choose a preference for my non-Haruhi vote……but Kotomi-chan and friends get it for the underdog factor.
Haruhi and Gurren Lagann.
Kyon-ko is so deliciously flat.
2 more for Haruhi and Gurren… though Clannad was really pushing it. If there was more Kyou and less Fu** (err… Fuko) then maybe it woulda knocked one of the 2 down…
Derailed’s gonna look nice with a Haruhi banner. If Gurren wins, it’d just be the banner we have up now, so that’d be silly. I’m imagining that the new banner’s gonna say something like “Mikuru’s Meido Cafe” – Gonna have to rename my bookmarks.
ALL HAIL HARUHI!
Female Kamina and Simon? DO NOT WANT.
I now demand that this blog be derailed by the cult of Seitenkan.
Blog of the Broken
i bet gurren lagann is gonna win it all
oh what are u fucking kidding me? more haruhi votes than gurren.. badbadbad
>> I now demand that this blog be derailed by the cult of Seitenkan.
Mako-cakes squad has been sieging it for a while.
If that pic for fumoffu does not win it, I don’t know what would.
I was rereading some of your old FMP! TSR and SHnY posts. It’s hard to express how much I miss having a really great KyoAni show to look forward to. Haruhi was so long ago, and harem angst just doesn’t really do it for me.
Why… Why do I have to choose?!
A rather well-done Gurren Lagann video for those interested:

Showed it to some people that never saw Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (TTGL) and managed to generate quite a lot of interest. For those that did see it, it was an enjoyable nostalgia trip showing just how great TTGL really was.
Fumoffu and Lagann. Long live Blue hair and Mecha. Besides, breaking probability is way more fun than warping it.
>> Mako-cakes squad has been sieging it for a while.
That Minami-ke failed to advance to the final four and there is an enormous influx of genderbending (both win and fail) in the span of under a month tells me that Seitenkan is the victor.
Sixten just broke Jason with the Ichigo Mashimaro-styled Fujioka.
Good job. Now just make sure that you draw Mako-chan that way too, and we’re all good. We can’t leave Jason half-broken, after all.
I would think She-mon (or Simona) would fall more into the DFC catagory, but then again…what am I thinking…just too broken I guess.
Ugh Clannad beat out Death Note…. So sad.
I wonder what a retro-blogging of Fumoffu by Derailed would look like? It is a shame that it was not blogged heavily here, resulting in mainly TSR blogs being used for advancement. Would any Fumoffu episode generate a score of pictures….aside from the Tessa fanservice times I mean? The imagination runs wild with captions.
