life on frontier

A post that moves at Macross speed!

Gurren Lagann‘s legacy for the fanboy world has to be the plethora of great soul burning quotes. How can you not be pumped whenever you hear stuff like “Mine is a drill that pierces the heavens!,” “Gattai!,” or “Who the fuck do you think I am?” Even if it’s spoken by a spoiled jpop star who is just about to run around campus chasing after her panties. While not wearing any. Then again, she is an exhibitionist. Typical harem moments always gets amped up in the Macross world.

Gattai!

Why do I like all of Ranka’s songs more than Sheryl’s? Maybe because they’re not juxtaposed with ridiculous battle footage. I like how in episode seven, S.M.S. has absolutely no problems shooting down the Vajira, yet in nine, they struggle to kill even one. Then I realized something… the scriptwriter for Macross Frontier is Hiroyuki Yoshino. He’s also involved as a scriptwriter or series composition for Mai Otome, Gundam Seed Destiny, Gundam 00, Code Geass, and Code Geass R2. My gosh, that’s quite a resume. Needless to say, the odds that Macross Frontier will train wreck (or colony crash) has been taken off the boards at Vegas.

(I really hope that episode ten’s title, “The Legend of Zero” is about Macross Zero and not that Zero.)

image

I don’t get how can Purple enter and leave the Macross fleet without being detected unless a lot of people are in on the conspiracy. Though if NUNS is useless and the conspiracy affects highest levels of government, S.M.S. should at least be able to find out? S.M.S. who has all this great awesome equipment, how can they not know Purple is leaving from the fleet at the very least? Also, if you were a conspirator and wanted Purple to be stealthy, why authorize him to combat S.M.S.? Perplexing. Then I realized that it’s the same scriptwriter as Code Geass R2.

image

Also don’t understand why there are huge cemeteries on Frontier. Wouldn’t cremation make more sense in the voids of space? Anyway, did this many people die already? Michelle’s sister only died a few years ago, and she’s like in the middle of huge cemetery.

image

Ranka caught a Pokemon! How cute.

image

I want a slug cell phone! Multi-touch is so 2009. Squishy-touch is the future! Apple needs to start working on the iSlug.

image

Whenever Ranka is in a room alone, the atmosphere seems to turn into a horror setting. I can just imagine her picking up her iSlug and hearing, “I can see you Ranka-chan.” Creepy. Or it could go the other route and have Nanase pop out with a butcher’s knife going “Gomen nasai. Gomen nasai. Gomen nasai.” Either way works.

image

Though any Nanase x Ranka moment is awesome. I did enjoy this scene because of Luca… Jun Fukuyama uses a totally different tone when voicing him than Lulu or Lawrence. Or maybe because Luca has an actual interest in women, and that throws me off.

image

I take that back. OH GEASS NO!

image

I was enjoying a nice morning cup of coffee when I saw the captain show up and take some of Ranka’s tissues. And I almost spit it out. Such a random moment… though I liked Nadesico‘s dig at the stereotypical Macross captains: “Wouldn’t you rather have a hawt high school girl than an old fart commanding?” I think that’s going to be the next poll… most moe anime ship captain. Right now, my list is Tess, Sumeragi, Yurika, and possibly Viralko. Help me out.

image

Let me be the 20,000th person to go, “ZOMG KONATA!” Though I’m wondering how many of readers are going, “Hey, we’d risk getting arrested for being ‘comforted’ by Klan’s miclone.” I’m also wonder how many of my readers are thinking, “Me next snoo-snoo!” or “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and bruised.”

image

No comment. Draw your own conclusions.

image

Cathy’s a huge wet blanket. I’m cringing whenever she’s on scene. If you have ever watched the abortion that was You’re Under Arrest‘s live action adaptation, you might remember (or have repressed) the extra character they inserted. The hag officelady who bosses around Natsumi and Miyuki. Cathy reminds me of her. No wonder she couldn’t place higher than sixth at Miss Macross Frontier.

image

Looks like Hiromi has new competition.

image

Animation quality’s been pretty good (though still a step behind Lulu of the Rebellion and Kurenai), and the CG work has been great. The vocals and the jpop have been excellent. Satelight might be a tier 3 or 4 studio. Fans of Shugo Chara! would probably agree.

(Though so far, aside from musically, they’ve only alluded to Macross Zero, which is another Satelight work. Of course, no mention of 7 which Frontier is a sequel of. Might be self-promotion, property rights or whatever since 7 was by Production Reed.)

Ranka is cute!

  1. First! YAHA! Thou i kinda like the harem like substance, I really hope they wont change the focus to that. Train wreak is the way to go this season.

  2. Macross 7 shall not be remembered! :P

  3. >>Ranka is cute!

No no, you’ve got it wrong. The correct phrase to use is ‘Ranka is a puppy!’ Her hair simulates puppy ears, she yelps and squeaks like a puppy, and you just want to pat her on the head and tell her she is a good girl. Ranka-puppy is superior!

  4. Klan when she was a kid was so much cuter than her micloned loli self, and I don’t even know how that’s possible. Ep 9 had too many classic KK moments, including:

    1) Naked in the miclone chamber
    2) Slapping a VF
    3) Mikhail using her to build a swing when they were kids
    4) Her subordinate Nene actually trying to hide behind her loli form

  5. Macross suffers from too little Klan.
Shes a large breasted alien woman trapped in a loli body, in love with her childhood human friend who is a playboy and does not see her as a woman.
She is criminally underutilized (although, as Michael points out, it may be just as criminal to utilize her to her full potential).

  6. I knew that, as soon as those shots of Macronized Chibi Klein hit the net, that Jason would have to post about Macross again. As for the trainwreck, I suspect it’ll be more the entertaining type rather than the ‘how the hell did we end up with this? Oh, right, there’s a story to finish up’ type we saw in Mai-Otome, or SEED Destiny. I’m only shocked that he didn’t include a picture of bandage Klein to boost site hits.

wp: It’s more that Macronized Chibi-Klein built the swing, and Mikhail used it because it was convenient and made for a good photo. I’ll bet he uses that to draw in the onee-sama types later with the ‘awww… it’s so cuuuute’ factor. Gotta like how Grace shot down Mikhail and broke him with just a few words – she’s like the Major, but as a talent manager than a special operations soldier.

As for Brera, there WERE shots of him… but in episode 8, we hear Leon had them ‘removed’ from records so there’d be no traces of Brera’s VF… and I suspect given his position as chief of staff/manipulator of presidents, he finds it pretty easy to remove stuff that SMS would have (especially with his lover, Kathy, working inside the SMS as a ‘liason’ – aka official spy). Besides which, their contract doesn’t stipulate learning more about the VF-27, so they’ve no reason to pursue the matter… at least, they didn’t have one until now, where one of their units got shot down by it.

As for the dead, we see they’re recycled, so there’s only gravestones left. Dunno how many people have died during the journey though, and how much of that graveyard is actually holographic like the sky rather than real headstones.

PS: We’ve had two Macross 7 references, or three counting the first few episode openings which showed the Macross 7 on the large map: the Fire Bomber tune playing in Ozma’s car in episode 2, and the “Planet Dance” formation in episode 7 which is an obvious tribute to Basara Nikki. Apparently, Ozma Lee is a Fire Bomber fan.

  7. Jason,

Here’s a KNBR Morning Show “What’ll you give me for…”

    Luca and Anita (RoD TV)

Klan and Hydra (UFO Princess Valkyrie)

  8. It’s because Macross 7 NEVER HAPPENED. Shout outs not withstanding…

    +1 for Futurama references.

I hope Macross F goes for the whole shebang and solves the mystery of the first Macross Colonization fleet (Misa Hayase’s fleet that disappeared) in a way that does not reference Macross 7 in any way whatsoever.

  9. I absolutely wouldn’t mind the crushed pelvis. I’ll start with the petite, then the normal looking, then the big boobs, then the petite again.

  10. >> I absolutely wouldn’t mind the crushed pelvis. I’ll start with the petite, then the normal looking, then the big boobs, then the petite again.

Wouldn’t you be dead from internal bleeding long before that? Crushed pelvis + major blood vessels in area including femoral artery and vein along with various other things?

Besides, it should be safe to get hugged/snuggled by Klein in macronized mode, as long as she doesn’t squeeze too hard and the head stays in a place where it can get some air… mmm… dozing on Klein-sama.

  11. Haesslich beat me to the punch, but yeah, he’s pretty much right; like in that field of obsidian headstones in EVA, there aren’t REALLY anyone buried there in the Frontier graveyard, since even the fallen are eventually recycled for use (back during Guilliam’s ‘burial’).

As for the people who were moaning about Macross 7. It happened. Deal with it. While it added kooky factors to an already ‘different’ SF setting, it DID expand the universe of the franchise, and shed light on the origins of the Protoculture, its legacy (the Zentraedi, the Supervision Army) and its eventual fall.

  12. As to the cemetery inquiry it seems a pretty decent size for the only one on a million+ person generational ship. And there probably isn’t anything under that ground, they’re probably all broken down and reintroduced to the system like the pilot that died in episode 1.

Enough of that though, I’d chase around some Sheryl panties any day.

  13. Dominatrix Sheryl (not shown here) broke my mind in a different way. A same voice actress on another pink haired girl (with glasses) doing the same thing kind of broken. Something that charater would never do, but would be very funny if they did.

  14. It will be nice the that around episode 15 there can be a catfight between Ranka and Sheryl. Am I the only who thinks Ranka’s voice actor sounds so good? I can listen to talk all day long :D

  15. “Animation quality’s been pretty good (though still a step behind Lulu of the Rebellion and Kurenai), and the CG work has been great.”

What?! the animation sucks. low frames. the characters look weird and disfigured at times. makes me think they spent on all the money for the OK cg work(with recycled footage during fights…)
It’s still my favorite mech anime so far. alot of potential. LOVE Klan. Favortie character. especially for the otaku out there with loli and huge gigantic women fetishes at the same time. no, i did not just lable myself.

  16. The difference in Combat succsess is explained in ep6. SMS is autorized Reaction weaponry which is the non-nuke unconventional Weapon in Macross.

  17. Jason, I am ashamed of you! You mention moe ship captains and yet you forgot about them? Did you not watch Haruhi at all?! How could you forget the glorious moment when Mikuru, Haruhi, and Nagato all commanded entire star fleets?!

  18. There’s also the antijamming tech deployed in episode 7 to let missiles work again, which the NUNS uses for its main antifighter punch.

I would play Soichirou to Klein’s Kanata… and that sounds so wrong. But if Alto will listen to her without talking back, she HAS to be Amazing.

  19. i hope harem happens less here. i find Ranka and her squeakiness extremely irritating and Sheryl to be a first class classical bitch. just gimme tran-Alto anytime. or Macro Klan!!

  20. Michael, you coward!

Just episode eight went down a little here and there in terms of animation quality, then episode nine helped a little in the character development section.

It has been many years since I saw Macross Zero (or it was Plus!); but I’ll be waiting next week’s episode.

  21. >> Jason, I am ashamed of you! You mention moe ship captains and yet you forgot about them? Did you not watch Haruhi at all?!

That’s not their primary function… plus it was just a video game.

    >> As for the dead, we see they’re recycled, so there’s only gravestones left. Dunno how many people have died during the journey though, and how much of that graveyard is actually holographic like the sky rather than real headstones.

It’s not really the number that gets me but instead is the space. Looking at Macross Frontier’s San Fran, they waste a lot of space for stuff like cemeteries and a ridiculous Golden Gate replica. Wouldn’t it make more sense to make better use of the land like what they normally do in a Gundam colony (can’t believe I’m using Gundam to argue a logic point). It’s expensive to put stuff in space.

(If I were building a space faring city, I would probably go for something more like the original Macross or even Tokyo-3.)

    Let’s compromise. Ranka-puppy is cute!

  22. As I said, we don’t know how much of the graveyard is faked EVA technology, and how much is real. Granted, they’ve got about 30 square kilometers to play with in there (5-6km per side, and if they’ve made it dual-level that’d double the available area)… but some of that’s given over to a real water body too, A square km or two isn’t that much to give over, especially if they’re just headstones and you start recycling the graveyard space by replacing headstones the way they do in places like Hong Kong.

  23. People can be very traditional, even when it comes to death and rememberance. If they build the city to be overlarge, say a San Francisco Metro area which has a population of over 7,25 million people, and only populate it with a million people, they’d have room for such luxury as “deculture”.

Even with only the city proper, you have a population of around three-quarters of a million people at present, not counting tourists and the people who work there from all over the Bay Area. If you include urban San Francisco you have over 4 million people.

For a species that has turned giants into tiny people, the space is fine. They managed to salvage a city inside of a warship that was the original Macross, so the setup of the even larger city ships for luxury 20 plus year cruise to some unknown world may be the way to go. It also seems to help that the “new” mixed species is based on Deculture, a singing war stopper, a large number of fighter/mech pilots, and a super ship. Loose the deculture and the species starts to splinter and fail…again.

  24. Macross F, I loved it.
Think next chapter 10 is relate MacrossZero’s.
maybe sheryl is daugter of Sara gnome?

    VF-27 is something relate Galaxy’s.
Japanese fan found seems to have marked Galaxy on the side of VF-27.

    sry for strange english.
    My site Anime japan

  25. What’s really strange is that they recycle bodies, but yet have trouble finding additional water. What’s the point of all this recycling if you need to continuously acquire resources?!? It’s almost as stupid as how the robots use humans as power sources in The Matrix.

The ‘land’ for the graveyard is not strange, considering the even bigger waste of space that is the full-sized Zentradi living quarters. I can bet you that no matter the size of the graveyard, it pales in comparison to that one Zentradi wall. So if they have room for one (because some people just don’t like to be mini), then they definitely have room for the other.

  26. Whoops I mean Zentradi MALL.

  27. >> If they build the city to be overlarge, say a San Francisco Metro area which has a population of over 7,25 million people, and only populate it with a million people, they’d have room for such luxury as “deculture”.

SF Bay Area is huge. SF itself is only about 700k. The census that was 7 million included from Contra Costa to Sonoma.

    http://www.bayareacensus.ca.gov/bayarea.htm

    >> The ‘land’ for the graveyard is not strange, considering the even bigger waste of space that is the full-sized Zentradi living quarters.

See, another logic break. It’s the same scriptwriter as Gundam Seed Destiny, so I severely lowered my expectations for Frontier.

  28. People are naturally wasteful creature, that is why we have first class seats and gas guzzlers running on the street. Furthermore people tend to consider waste depending on the cost and scale. Obviously if due to technological advance, including cemeteries in spaceship costs them only 1 dollar equivalent to build and maintain there probably wouldn’t be much of reason not to. If giving the full size Zentraedis malls and farms that keeps them from being unhappy and rebelling, don’t cost much in terms of resouce, then that would probably be a good idea too.

I don’t believe we were given any further information on the budgets of the Macross fleet as well as the cost to build them so unless they are all really Vulcans or Machines expecting to have a ship designed and built to house thousands of civilians to be not wasteful is probably unrealistic in and of itself. The original Macross was designed more efficient due to the fact that it was mainly a military project that did not have housing 40k civilian in mind hence there was an obvious lack of space.

Also the Vajra they shot down so easily in ep 7 were mainly yellow ones, other then Michael they always had some trouble with the ed ones and Michael was having an off day there.

VF 27 obviously have some stealth capability furthermore Grace had access into their computer system. VF 27 engaged SMS because it was trying to kill all the witness that saw him attempting to complete his mission of destroying Vajra hive.
