After that, please say, “Speed like Keanu Reeves” three times.
(I’m going to try to keep these posts as spoiler-free as I can, but it’s not easy. You’ve been warned.)
Initial Impressions
The setup for this arc is fairly simple with Tomoya spending more and more time in the reference room (not to be confused with the library) and with Yukine. Starting off, it’s just like any other arc with Tomoya killing time with Sunohara. Though still early on in this arc, you can influence the infamous gym storage locker scene (more on this later). I wonder if that scene is like Clannad‘s calling card, much like how God Knows is Haruhi‘s.
The Plot Thickens
Much like Tomoyo’s route, there’s a certain amount of repetition. For Yukine’s route, it seems like lunch is the primary focus with Sunohara and Tomoya spending time with her for after lunch coffee… and then spending time with her for lunch and coffee… and then not being able to keep away from her at all. Again, Sunohara has just too big of a role in this story.
The twist to these idyllic days is that Yukine has, on occasion, a lot of sketchy people entering and leaving this reference room. While none of these characters are illustrated, we can surmise none of them are members of the Ouran Host Club. These sketchy people, of course, seem to adore Yukine for whatever reason.
One really unnecessary plot component is that eventually a little boy will come and try to meet Yukine, and he’ll end up as Pr0nohara’s apprentice. That part of the story felt tacked on just to give Yukine’s arc a bit more volume, but, in the end, it didn’t really deepen or advance our understanding of Yukine’s situation as much as it should have. And I would much rather see Onizuka or someone else of that caliber sneak in and kick Tomoya’s ass.
“I Can See The End!”
Towards the end of the arc, Yukine spends more and more time sleeping on Tomoya’s lap. At that point, it’s a good idea to heed the Capturing God’s advice and let sleeping girls sleep. But it’s funny how and where Tomoya eventually lays the lipservice on Yukine.
(In terms of inappropriate time for a kick in the gut, it still doesn’t top the “Let’s get a divorce” funeral scene from Old School.)
Getting Dusty
For most of the story, it doesn’t seem like Tomoya is making a connection with Yukine. It’s a lot slower and gentler than either the Tomoyo or Misae relationships, and until Yukine started using Tomoya’s lap as a pillow, it didn’t feel like she was treating Tomoya any different from all the other guys in her harem.
I guess I just didn’t enjoy it as much. Hard building a rapport with a girl who only brews coffee, cooks rice, and bandages gangsters.
Top Three Images
1. I liked Tomoyo’s gym storage locker scene? *shock* I enjoyed it a lot and wished it was included somehow in the Tomoyo OVA. And definitely I felt gypped that we got no illustrations of the scene, especially of any possible look on Tomoyo’s face when Tomoya started de-pantsing. Most other blogs would just stop there with their comments, but Derailed by Darry always goes the extra mile. Enjoy:
I got pushed down as Tomoyo clings to me. With a number of large sounds, we both became trapped, inside the storage room. “That was close. Just now, there was a flyball from the baseball team,” says Tomoyo.
Does the Devil exist? The door’s shut, and it’s pitch black in here. Inside, Tomoyo was on top of me.
“Well, seems like the crisis is gone now…”
“I guess…” responds Tomoyo. Her voice was close to my ear.
“Well… why don’t you get off me then?”
“Though I want to move, but I can’t…”
“Why?”
“Something really heavy’s on top of my back…”
“That can’t be much. You should be able to push it off you and get up.”
“Easy for you to say… this is really heavy…” At the same time, a moaning voice like an “ugh” came out.
“Hey, are you hurt?”
“Yeah… looks like it…”
“That’s why you can’t move, huh…”
“Yeah.”
This really was an act of the Devil… “Are you okay?”
“Yeah.”
We embraced each other in the dark. Though something heavy was on Tomoyo’s back, all I could do was embrace her pain. I have to do something here, somehow. “Well… I’m gonna move.”
“Ah… okay… counting on you.”
I don’t have the strength to move my hand or my feet the way that I’m positioned. Even so, I managed to slide myself through the floor with the heel of my shoe. Slip. I can feel the most tender part of her body as I slide.
“Haaa…” lets out Tomoyo. She took a deep breath.
“I’m going to move again.”
“O-okay.”
Slip, slip… bang! My head ran into something.
“Are you okay?”
“Okay, but it doesn’t look like we can escape up…”
“I see…”
“This time, I’m moving down…”
“… okay…. guess you should try that…”
We can feel each others heat as both of our sweat join together. No matter which direction I face, I end up smelling the scent of Tomoyo’s hair. Just thinking about it, the lower half of my body heats up; however, to let my body take control in this situation is a little… “Ugh.”
“Are you okay?”
“It’s nothing, that moan didn’t mean I was in pain…”
“…? Then, how about this… I’ll try lifting it up just once… when that happens, you should get out…”
“Eh? What about you?”
“I don’t know. After that, pulling me out should be okay…”
“Baka! I can’t do something like that!”
“Why?”
“Being saved by a girl then letting that girl get pinned down underneath is something Sunohara would do… even more, pulling you out? You’re harsh.”
“I don’t care if I’m harsh… if you can get away from this awful situation, then…”
“This isn’t really an awful situation… this isn’t that bad at all…”
“Really?”
“Okay, so please, don’t push yourself.”
“You’re quite a nice person, Tomoya. I’ll end up falling for you…” Tomoyo whispers with a warm breath close to my ear. My chest throbs. If I believe the spell from yesterday, then… she really likes me.
“Hey, Tomoya…” If this keeps up, Tomoyo and I might… ahhh, this is bad. Anyway, it’s that spell’s faught that we’re in this situation… “Tomoya, I’m… umm…” She’s so cunning… this ain’t good… I start to try to think of a way to escape. What did Miyazawa say again… ?
That’s right! The first thing is… “Just a minute, excuse me…” I put my finger near my stomach and unfasten my trouser’s button. And then, I pull down my trousers with both my hands.
“Wha… ?! W-wait a second, Tomoya… what are you doing in a situation like this… ? Well, uh… it’s not like I don’t want too… but, before that I want to hear it from your lips first…”
2. Have I mentioned that during this arc there are a lot of possible uncomfortable gay moments with Sunohara? I think all the innuendo between the two lowers Yukine’s arc for me by a whole letter grade.
3. The Kyou gym storage locker scene unfolded very similarly to the anime, so just watch the anime version instead. The only thing you’re really missing out is Kyou removing her shirt, but they didn’t illustrate that in either version. *sob* Being deprived of Kyou stripping is the saddest kick in the gut scenario that Jun Maeda has ever produced.
BONUS. Why does Sunohara get all the good lines this route? It almost seems like Tomoya is extra cruel to him… maybe that cruelty is covering up his lo– OH GEASS NO!
Final Thoughts
– Can you blame Sunohara for taking off his pants with Tomoyo around? Who can control themselves in that situation? J/K.
– Going with Tomoyo unlocks a few bonus scenes, including the final Tomoyo scene where Sunohara drags Tomoyo to confront the other delinquents with Sunohara, of course, getting kicked.
– Getting locked in the gym storage locker with Sunohara… did I say that this route had a lot of unnecessary homoerotic overtones?
– Getting locked into that same gym storage locker with Akio… wait… what the heck? Did I stumble into Grosse Point Blank? (Though Akio did pull a Kirameki… think Shigofumi.)
– Delicious creamy filling of a tsundere Tootie Pop.
– Does Yukine have a rice fetish? She must, right?
– Still no Kotomi-chan. I think she and Sanae are the last major characters to be seen. Hence, Kotomi-chan next.
Are these… scenes.. with Sunohara meant to be an encouragement to follow the Yukine route, or a means of discouraging players from doing so? Seriously, with those lines and the ‘being locked up with Sunohara instead of Yukine’… maybe the writers of this scenario were trying to tell us something?

So true, so true…
Haesslich: Do recall that there IS a Sunohara ending (it’s one of the few real bad ends in CLANNAD), so the homoerotic undertones are there for good reason, and NOT just to please random fangirls picking up the game for some reason. It’s played mostly for laughs though.
I was honestly surprised Tomoya got out of that kiss alive. Also, waiting for the Hiiragi Kappei post and all it’s brokenness.
If only Clannad wasn’t all ages, this wouldn’t have happened. It’s reasons like this that made me hold off until the Extasty(sic) version of Little Busters…
>> Getting locked in the gym storage locker with Sunohara…
…Sunohara slowly takes down his trousers.
…OH GEASS NO!
>> Hence, Kotomi-chan next.
Looking forward to it!
i went to reread the tomoyo locker room scene to count the number of innuendos…
I gave up. Dammit, after my DMC4 run I’m going to play this game.
You think this route has blatant homoerotic overtones?
I think you should play the infamous Sunohara gay ending.
I’ll probably load up Clannad and play this path soon. I just picked up Phantom of Inferno so I’m hoping to get into a Visual Novel playing mood. ^^;
I was wondering if the homoerotic undertones here are the writers’ way of saying that they didn’t like Yukine since they get so close to the Sunohara gay ending. It isn’t just coincidence that these all appear on this route, after all.
WTF? Is the “Speed” referance a doctored photo? How does that contextuality make sense?
Wait, why is Sunohara whipping off his trousers at all of the girls? Is showing them Little Graham his new chat-up technique?
I thought it was because Tomoya was around…
I just keep finding more reasons to play this game. Damn, I wish I had a new computer.
“WTF? Is the “Speed†referance a doctored photo? How does that contextuality make sense?”
Yeah, reading some of these screencaps are hilarious. I’m reminded of the words of the Great BeHatted One: “That’s when I said to myself, ‘I’m so going to quote that out of context.’ Until I realized, it doesn’t make any sense in context either.”
“Do recall that there IS a Sunohara ending (it’s one of the few real bad ends in CLANNAD), so the homoerotic undertones are there for good reason, and NOT just to please random fangirls picking up the game for some reason. It’s played mostly for laughs though.”
*jawdrop*
>>WTF? Is the “Speed†referance a doctored photo? How does that contextuality make sense?
Nope, that line is in the game. It’s an “incantation” of sorts.
Um, was there a rest of the post, I got derailed by tomoyo locked in the storage shed story. You’re breaking me Jason.
“Pour on Genki Dama!”
I personally find Sunohara hilarious in this one. When Tomoya gets trapped in the storage room with Nagisa, she is the one who has to drop his pants for him, cuz his hands were uhhh occupied. Jason you seem unusually….sensitive about this whole homoerotic thing this time around. Or were you always like this? Wait till you get to Kappei’s route. Sunohara isn’t just there, he is actually necessary for the plot. Why did you choose the “get stuck in gym locker/closet thing with Sunohara” anyway? kukuku. By the way… how do you get the Sunohara end anyway? I am curious as hell.
Wait, are those storage room scenes a part of the main Yukine route, or do you have to make detours from this guide: http://soukyuu.emevas.net/CLANNAD_guide.html#1
I know that the guide has a section called “Yukine’s storage room curse”, but I’m confused as to whether or not those are just completely different arcs, just with the storage rooms included. Plus, they make no mention of the Sunohara storage room route.
