SVGC recently got a Isuka machine, and, well, moth to fire! The first thing I noticed was that the machine only took dollar coins. WTF. At least I was able to get change there. The old, standard gang is back… expect that Faust is no longer wearing his trademark grocery bag. I was too scared to try any of the new characters– one looked like a palette-swapped Hello Kitty.

Characters now have a career mode where winning matches gives them points they can invest into new costumes and new moves. Some characters, when paired with others, can execute special team attacks using part or all of their tension bar. It’s very similar to DOAX where some of the girls work well together while others just refuse to team up at all. For example, Johnny and Dizzy plays well together, but Sol and Ky do not (sorry yaoi fangirls). I probably could have done reasonably well with Baiken and Sol, but I decided on using Dizzy… just because I was more interested in unlockable costumes than new moves. Most of the “new” costumes are just palette-swaps of their standard, though Dizzy can now fight in her Jellyfish Pirate uniform. I find this to be an excellent upgrade in every way over X2. I hear some characters get meido outfits– Jam, Potemkin, etc.

The fighting system is a lot more chaotic than before, especially since there’s more people on screen. The action never degrades into a Smash-like free-for-all, but having to watch out for two attackers make it hard to mount any sort of strategy. That and I was pretty lost in general. The palette-swapped Hello Kitty kept kicking my butt.

I wish I could play more, but it was getting expensive. Good news is that the US PS2 release date is November. Maybe soon I can play this without feeding dollar coins!

Mistfiner!

What’s the name of May’s friend again? Oh yeah… April Fools!

  2. He’s kidding. Just about this entire post is fake. =P Lol, an arcade that requires you to bring dollar coins in order to play won’t stay in business very long. ;)
