melancholy of haruhi suzumiya 4 discussion

The Forgotten

Well, since it’s the NBA playoffs, and I haven’t really watched anything other than you-know-what this week, I’ll just respond to everyone’s comments.

(Anime has always been about flavor of the month. If not Lum, if not Rei, if not Belldandy, if not Chidori, if not Mai, if not Suiseiseki, if not Haruhi, there’s always going to be someone for the fanboys to obsess over. Just with the “instant history” feel of the internet these days, the retention times have been dramatically cut… as Shana has been completely shoved out of everyone’s collective thoughts in favor of Haruhi. Though some, like Suiseiseki, have a bit more staying power than Shana, but still get bulldozed to make way for the Haruhi Expressway. As for Haruhi, well, I think she has Ayanami-like potential for staying power. Has there been any anime character as kinetic as she is?)

If you need something to do you could try translating the novels for the rest of us you know. – Crusader

I’ll get on it once I finish up the Shana, Full Metal Panic, and Crest of the Stars novels. *rolls eyes* I’m kinda surprised that I see light novels for Gundam Seed and Vampire Hunter D at Borders these days, so I’m hoping that someday some American publisher will wise up and start releasing more. I think there’s definitely an audience for them in the states. They’d sell at least 50, maybe even 60, of Haruhi.

Still, the wiki approach to translating Haruhi seems to be going nicely. If you know Japanese and can spare some time, help them out.

Regarding the red / blue “panty” issue, I’m pretty sure they were actually bloomers. Haruhiverse High School first year track suits are blue, and second year are red, q.e.d. – Shingo

I defer to the Aperture of Moe for all bloomer-related items from now on.

I was actually dreading Itsuki’s intro since he looked the playboy-ish anime stereotype. But he actually seems like a pretty cool character in this episode. – zero

They need more playboys in anime, at least non-loser playboys. I’m sick of doormats like Haruo and Yukinari… when Matsumaru can be considered a hero, well, that’s how bad the situation has gotten. Itsuki seems like a pretty chill guy… I’d probably hang around him if he were a real person. Though if he had kissed Mikuru, I’d probably get Enma Ai to ferry the bastard to hell. He seems more harmless compared to…

Kyon is kind of oblivious, isn’t he. His friends are such wannabe players, too. – Kylara

I loved how his friends just plowed past everyone to talk to Mikuru’s friend. I guess guys just don’t like insane (Haruhi) or dominated (Mikuru) girls. I think that Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has the potential to descend into some romantic melodrama… maybe a crazier, more surreal, less angsty Kare Kano. A requisite for that would require some tension between Haruhi and Kyon… Haruhi doing the Shana-like, “I don’t know I’m in love” role and Kyon as being too intent on saving the world to notice that Haruhi is falling for him. In other words, a funnier Shakugan no Shana. (Anyone else notice that this episode has absolutely no tension for the “the world is going to end if Haruhi loses” subplot? I felt more tension watching poor Mikuru get pelted.)

and your spoiler makes me wonder, did that occur in the manga timeline before this baseball match?? – Jesterman

I think the manga is up to where the monster just appeared. Neither the resolution of that incident nor the baseball match have shown up in the manga yet. I’m not sure if the manga follows the novel completely anyway.

Chapter 8

Do I sense the beginnings of jealousy? – Musashiken

Another hint is the fact that Haruhi did not give Mikuru a pny tail in addition to her cheer leadr outfit. Itsuki also hints at how Kyon is responsible and why Haruhi willed it so that Kyon would be fourth batter. – Crusader

I think Haruhi definitely likes Kyon, why else would she talk to him and drag him into SOS Brigade? So jealously would be a natural extension of that. She also treats Kyon differently than the other club members… she actually consults him from time-to-time whereas Yuki and Mikuru just get dragged along. Though I’d love to see a double-ponytailed Mikuru in a cheerleader outfit…

UP: you forgot to included the Touch theme music during the baseball game in your awsomeness index. – Xellos-_^

Up: Yuki finally got some quality screen time. Watching her (not) catch the balls was one of the highlight of the episode. – Seyluun

Two additions to the SOS Brigade Awesomeness Index. BTW, Yuki looked like she had some skillz, just she didn’t seem motivated to use them. She’s Manny Ramirez.

Haruhi is definitely HAADO GEI for Mikuru. When she’s not lusting after the perpetually-different Kyon, of course.(Mikuru’s doormatness notwithstanding…) – DrmChsr0

It’s official. Haruhi-Kyon-Mikuru has just passed Saber-Emiya-Rin as “threesome that most needs to happen.”

  1. Spoiler!!!

The spoiler pic in question (which is from the 1st novel) happens before the baseball match.

  2. “It’s official. Haruhi-Kyon-Mikuru has just passed Saber-Emiya-Rin as “threesome that most needs to happen.”

    Word. I complete agree. Lol.

  3. >>(Anyone else notice that this episode has absolutely no tension for the “the world is going to end if Haruhi loses” subplot? I felt more tension watching poor Mikuru get pelted.)

The mock seriousness of Itsuki’s “If the game ends now, it will mean the end of this world. We must do all we can to hold them to two runs!” was one of the funniest lines this episode, I thought.

Honestly, though, can you blame them for being less than distraught? Spending the rest of the forseeable future thanklessly catering to the whims of a domineering god-child might make the end of the world seem like a blessed release…

More seriously, though, Mikuru knows what’s going to happen, and Yuki is an emotionless Rei-clone. Kyon is so stubborn and cynical, I almost believe that he’d doom the world just to teach Haruhi a lesson. The only other person with reason to be concerned is Itsuki, and he has a plan.

  4. I agree with Vinland about kyon’s state of mind. The Touch music still warms my heart. Here is a food for thought. We have made a comparison of Haruhi to Evangellion, but I wonder if UruseiYatsura might be a better choice, as both are insane and funny, with some gratious Fan-service, domineering female characters, and cynical male characters. We, of course, wish Haruhi can duplicate the longevity of UruseiYatsura ( 218 episodes, 7 movies, and 12+ OVA episodes ), which beats heck out of almost all the other series we have mentioned.

  5. Thnx on the ‘teaser info’ and the HD screencap! By far this is the most ‘must read’ blogs out there. Keep it up!

Indeed as the world is going to end one way or another, and certain groups seem bent on destroying the planet to force the rapture, the world ending is not as important as Mikuru being struck by baseballs.

    >>It’s official. Haruhi-Kyon-Mikuru has just passed Saber-Emiya-Rin as “threesome that most needs to happen.”

Haruhi and Mikuru already put me in shock with the ear bit, any more and some of us may get seizures from moe-overloads. As for Saber-Emiya-Rin vs. Haruhi-Kyon-Mikuru, Kyon > Emiya is a no brainer and Haruhi has Godlike powers compared to swords and sorcery.

In accordance with Mikuru-ran theories on temporal mechanics what she does now has little effect or no effect on the future as for her time is not linear. Admittedly though powers of Haruhi may even alter the the laws of physics.

When Kyon has his near date with Mikuru we shall see how Hell hath no Fury like Haruhi scorned. As for a more fun Kare Kano, I look forward to it, no Anno, no angst (as my Drill Instructor liked to say “If you want to cry I’ll give you something to cry about.”), and no Gainax ending sounds like a winner to me.

  7. Technically, the Saber-Emiya-Rin threesome has already occurred. What was it episode 15, 16? Well, now it’s time for us anime fans (fanboys) to fulfill our threesome needs with another potential group, namely Haruhi-Kyon-Mikuru. All we need is something on the lines of “mana” to bring it about.

  8. Kyon’s sarcastic statement on how it’s sad that the fate of the world depends on this dinky little baseball game is pretty accurate, methinks.

I think every person who blogged this screencapped the Haruhi-ear-Mikuru-bite scene. Amaaazing.

  9. I think one of the reasons they went on episode skipping is they want to pack in a few more of the books in a way that when ep 14 finally comes it won’t end with a dangling episode. They’ll probably end the series with resolving the “wold-cramping” situation.

We’ll probably see a one or two of these “filler” episodes in the future.

And, I just love the BGMs!!! I think one of the reasons I like rewatching MoHS is because the sound just rocks with the animation.

  10. >>I think every person who blogged this screencapped the Haruhi-ear-Mikuru-bite scene. Amaaazing.

It’s sinfull to not include the Haruhi-Chomp-Mikuru scene. That scene just wins, no competition. PLUS, if you see that particular screencap without context, IT would looked like a Haruhi-Lick-Mikuru scene. Which was the impression I got when I saw the screencap before the episode. ^^ That’s instant advertisement right there.

  11. >>We’ll probably see a one or two of these “filler” episodes in the future.

I was thinking about how they could easily work in the other stories from Boredom as filler eps, but… if they were going to do that, wouldn’t this have been Taikutsu I instead of just Taikutsu?

  12. >>It’s official. Haruhi-Kyon-Mikuru has just passed Saber-Emiya-Rin as “threesome that most needs to happen.”

But… Mikuru would be crying the whole time… and Haruhi would try something impossible. It would be a disaster, Kyon would sigh and shake his head, and then what?

  13. I was thinking about how they could easily work in the other stories from Boredom as filler eps, but… if they were going to do that, wouldn’t this have been Taikutsu I instead of just Taikutsu?

Well, I think they are going to do this:

    6 episodes for book 1.
    6 episodes for book 2.
    1 episode from book 3.
    Mikuru-run run Movie

    thus, 14 episodes.

Especially since Haruhi listed this episode as episode 7, which would put it right after they would finish up book 1, and right before book 2, whcih is where the story falls chronologically anyway.

And on another note, you do realize that the world could end because Haruhi has an exceptionally bad period, right?

  14. The world can’t end until Kyon wants it to end. He’s the meta-meta-manipulator above Haruhi’s meta-manipulation of the world. Amazing things happen because Haruhi wants them to. But the reason Haruhi is there to want them in the first place is that Kyon’s reality-manipulation caused her to appear. Consider this bit from the intro (from the Wiki translation project). Kyon is explaining that he used to daydream of being the hero of some amazing adventure, but he was afraid he’d blow the hero role. Then he had a better idea.

    [begin quote]
Wait, calm down. If I really were ever attacked by aliens or whatever, how could I ever possibly fight against them? I don’t even have any special powers!

Hmm, how about this: one day, a mysterious new student transfers to my class. He’s really an alien or from the future, and he has telepathic abilities. When he gets into a fight with the bad guys, all I need to do is find a way to get involved in his war. He’ll handle all the fighting and I can just be his flunky sidekick. Oh my god, this is great, I am so clever!
    [end quote]

Then Haruhi appeared to site down behind him, right on schedule.

  15. Wow. Great observations. I was going to post up a Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 4 Discussion Discussion, but, I think that’s a bit too much.

    >> Spending the rest of the forseeable future thanklessly catering to the whims of a domineering god-child might make the end of the world seem like a blessed release…

Sign me up! I’d bow down to Haruhi… honestly, Kyon doesn’t have to be in the club. He joined of his own free will.

    >> But… Mikuru would be crying the whole time… and Haruhi would try something impossible. It would be a disaster, Kyon would sigh and shake his head, and then what?

That’s the best kind of threesome! It’ll be much better than Saber being frigid, Rin trying to initiate the action, and poor Emiya waiting for his Viagra to kick in.

    >> And on another note, you do realize that the world could end because Haruhi has an exceptionally bad period, right?

Also explains why Nina is still an otome… ?

  16. >>It’ll be much better than Saber being frigid, Rin trying to initiate the action, and poor Emiya waiting for his Viagra to kick in.

Well, granted, but that was just wtfawkward. I think I’d cry if they actually pulled this threesome, Mikuru really ellicits way too much pathos. Or is it bathos? Maybe I’d laugh.
