GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! (Spoiler)

image

Since people have already guessed the spoiler, I don’t feel bad posting half of it. What happens after that is yet another spoiler. Anyway, it’s been a busy week for me and took me a while to plow through the comments for the week (AoMM received 20,000 spam comments this week… a new spam tool must have been released or something). Let’s get through these comments, desho desho?

1999-2000 had Onizuka’s German Suplex, 2005 (was it 2004?) had Eri’s Shining Wizard, now we have Haruhi’s Drop Kick. – Sheba

Onizuka’s suplex is still the greatest random wrestling move in anime history. I loved how badly Takashi Sorimachi botched it in the live action (1998) version. Haruhi’s drop kick will probably make a top ten, but not top five since we’ve seen Chidori pwn Sagara numerous times with the same move. As Haess noted, “although I wonder if the Chidori-style flying kick Haruhi delivers counts as another FMP reference?” Eri would make the top five, as would Chidori’s rock bottom on poor Sagara.

Wow… Maido LOL Fang-Tan just went up 25 places in my books. I can hardly wait for the next episode. – Baka-Kun

Word.

LOL FANG-TAN is pure win and awesome. Every character in Haruhi brings something to the table… Kyon has his sarcasm, Itsuki for his uncomfortable male bonding, Yuki for her understatedness/asskicking, Mikuru for moe moe moe, Haruhi for her tsundere/megalomania, LOL FANG-TAN for LOL, imouto for loli-in-a-duffle bag, Ryoko for killer loli syndrome, etc. Fantastic cast. Can’t think of another anime with so many characters who bring such a diverse assortment of win and gold to a series. Maybe Azumanga.

Here’s a chart I found on 4chan detailing the SOS relationships… I don’t agree with it… “Kyon-kun’s body will be mine”?!? [mirror 1] [mirror 2]

Haruhi’s Dropkick is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. – [schism]

That one anime featuring father/daugther incest is the greatest thing that I’ve ever seen. Not even Keroro Gunso‘s interspecies uncle/niece incest can top it.

(I’m kidding. Cowering Mikuru is still the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.)

That Computer Club president looks a LOT like Murata Azrael from SEED… – Haesslich

He whines and loses like him too. I think just to complete the effect, Yuki needs to impale him with a beam saber.

The CSociety’s character design is actually a parody of a character from the series, ‘Yamato’. As is the bearded man on the CD-cover. – Skane

And the head of the Computer Society was playing as Desslar/Desslock from Uchuu Senkan Yamato/Star Blazers. Classic anime ref ftw. (Dess-lock DesslockDesslock…) – rikchik

This show? I’m nowhere in the vicinity of being born when this aired. I’ll go with Azrael, who probably is a rip-off of the Yamato character, knowing how Bandai/Sunrise likes to recycle plot… OPs… and, uh, pretty much everything.

(If Sunrise were working on Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Yuki and Mikuru would be plotting to retake the SOS Brigade HQ with the help of a mysterious masked Kyon, who “died” back in episode 8, and the climatic battle will feature Mikuru piercing Haruhi with a beam saber.)

I was looking quite forward to Haruhi getting frustrated with her fleet and then blaze off with her Za*u Custom. – Xeifa

This is Haruhi we’re talking about… she wouldn’t pilot a Za*u. Not megalomaniac enough. She’d pilot something more like Epy*n. Kyon, the grunt, gets the Za*u.

Does anyone know any of the current computer games whose gameplay is similar to the fictitious one played in this episode?

This episode sorta made me interested in trying one. – justanothergirl

The more I think about it, isn’t what they’re playing just a prettier version of Battleship? You sunk my Haruhi!

(I have yet to find a decent space armada simulation game. Homeworld is probably the “best.”)

Since she wasn’t abusing Mikuru through the whole episode, I really enjoyed Haruhi’s megalomania. – ubu

Blastphemy. Haruhi is greatest costume raping Mikuru.

So basically what is the main purpose of this anime?- NakedAngel

Make $ for Kyoto Animation? To accomplish that, entertain the fans in such a way we’ll buy tons of DVDs, soundtracks, and related mechandise. I loved how Hare Hare Yukai made #1 on Oricon’s listing… the thought of a distraught Glay looking on as an anime ED beats them out makes me smile for some odd reason. The best part is that they show Oricon’s countdown every week in Silicon Valley on KTSF, and I’m giddy at the prospect of Haruhi on American TV, even if it is only for five seconds.

Re: Injection, Perspiration…

I think that was Haruhi’s clumsy way of flirting. – braincraft

She is a healthy girl who has urges from time to time, after all. She’s the best. She needs to start writing her own advice column…

“Dear Oharuhi-sama, I caught my twin sister on a date with this boy that I like. What should I do? – Hinamizawa Hottie.”

“Dear Hinamizawa Hottie, men are potatoes.”

Okay, time to start up a lightening round!

Is there 14 episodes plus the adventures of mikuru?
if one goes by haruhi’s counting it’s 14 plus one instead right? – me of course

No, the 14 episode count includes Mikuru-run.

Kyon beoming more like Haruhi? Indeed. Haruhi-sama’s powers are beginning to have an effect turning Kyon into her ideal consort. As we can plainly see she wants to meet her equal not potatoes. – Crusader

Didn’t the Borg Queen try this with Data?

Or perhaps she wants a hearty, meat and potatos based stew, at this point. – teki

I bet I get more sexual innuendoes in my comments than any other anime blogger. You guys are fantastic.

I disagree here, it’s not a referrence of Nekoki, it’s actually a referrence of Nekoman (drawing by Aya Hirano, see the background of haruhi.tv). – DF

It was a joke. Though my man-crush on Ginko is certainly no joke.

I thought Kyon’s comments were particularly good this episode, and I love the Yuki shots where she’s just looking straight forward and blinking. – wp

I can’t believe it takes this much skill to animated someone looking forward and blinking. She’s like a cuter version of Fat Cat Mikoto.

Oh, and does Starship Captain Mikuru count as a new Mikuru fetish mode? – Xeifa

Not really since Captain Mikuru reminded me more of Cowering Mikuru than a new moe mode. If the camera spent more time on her short skirt, then yes, but alas. A Costumed Cowering Mikuru is still fine.

I think Starship Captain Mikuru should count, definitly.

And the next episode has Lol Fang-tan in the preview too. – Symmetry

I propose instead the “I have no idea how to play StarCraft so I’ll just collapse on the keyboard” Mikuru moe mode. Mikuru had too little screentime in episode 11.

I agree Kaptain Mikuru qualifies as a moe mode. I also motion for the recognition of the Haruhi school of Northern Shaolin.

Mikuru in a get up with Fang-tan, c’mon time move faster. – Crusader

Oharuhi damn. I’m outnumbered. Let me deflect some attention by tossing up some LOL FANG-TAN goodness. Lightening round‘s over.

image

I’d like to know what Yuki is typing at the end of the ep, if she had a keyboard rather than a book… – Seyluun

She’s practicing for a ‘lisk rush build.

Man… I am beginning to associate SHaruhi more with Pani Poni Dash than NGE at this point. Nay, scratch that. I DO associate SHaruhi more with Pani Poni Dash than with NGE at this point. – Skane

Pani Poni Dash is a niche show that doesn’t make a lot of sense to most people. Haruhi Suzumiya is now referred to as the “fifth revolution” by Japanese anime bloggers, with Eva being “third revolution” or something like that. I don’t read Japanese anime blogs regularly to really sort this stuff out. It’s like some random Japanese person reading AoMM occasionally and scratching their head, “Steven Nash-san?” Anyway, Haruhi is like Eva in how they transcended being a niche series and into something more mainstream, very difficult for a non-Toriyama, non-Pokemon series to do. Plus, Kyon’s a reluctant hero (sound familiar?), Itsuki’s his supposedly gay friend (sound familiar?), Yuki has clones and is the quiet one (sound familiar?), and Haruhi’s a mega tsundere (as opposed to the omega tsundere).

Also, major ups for the sound team to switch to the MIDI version of the grandiose music in the “game world” when they switched back to the “real world”. – [schism]

Yet another reason why Kyoto Animation is currently the greatest animation studio. (Right now I’ll rank them 1. Kyoto 2. Production IG 3. Bones 4. Madhouse 5. JC Staff 609. Sunrise 610. Gonzo 611. AIC) In five years, Kyoto’ll be pumping out Konomimi-level crap too.

So who’s going to sing in ep 12? – cclragnarok

I’m guessing Hirano Aya. Nipponsei has a Suzumiya Haruhi insert song scheduled for release on Tuesdasy. Oh, we need a cute or not decision on Aya. She’s not as hawt as Mika Kikuchi, but that’s a tough bar to cross. I posted some of her archery pictures earlier.

Man, I am already counting down the episodes towards the end. I mean, Haruhi is just too cool, I just can bear the fact it is only 14 episodes. A good show that doesn’t get the 26 treatment… – Nemo_N

I’ve been complaining about the 14 episodes since April. There’s no way Kanon can be as awesome as Haruhi. No drop kicks. No cowering Ayu. No battle cries of “FUMOFFU!” Haruhi is now #1 on my…

Top Ten Series in Desperate Need of More Episodes

10. Evangelion… Gainax needs one or two more He Is My Master-class disasters, and we’ll be seeing another Evangelion series. (I’m guessing it’ll be a harem comedy.) It’ll pay the bills.

9. Full Metal Panic… the question becomes, do you want to see The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya before or after Continuing on My Own? Mmm… or, since things are looking bleak in COMO for Mithril, Haruhi disappeared to save Mithril’s ass? Her megalomania can power ten lambda drivers! I’m giddy now. If Sagara can barely survive Chidori and Tess, can he survive Chidori, Tess, and Haruhi?

8. Macross… needs more Plus, less Zero. In any case, I’m hoping that they name the inevitable next series Macross iPod.

7. Mushishi… to satisfy my man-crush on Ginko. Grats the Mushishi for winning the recent Kodansha Awards… though I’m not sure how valid they are since they have Air Gear (?!?) winning something other than “Best Melonpan.”

6. King of Bandits Jing… Nightmare Tales needs to be animated. The first series was a horrible blastphemy on the manga.

5. Groove Adventure Rave… just kidding. Nadisco… been bothering me for seven years and counting. I really need to let it go.

4. Magical Teenager Lyrical Nanoha… I’m looking forward to Nanoha’s melonp… err… I mean… the competent English voicework. Yeah, that’s it. No one will suspect a thing…

3. Rozen Maiden… they need to kill of Shinku and make Suigintou the star. Souseiseki would be her sidekick as they travel around the world with Kun-Kun solving mysteries. How could that lose?

2. Kare Kano… and redo episodes 19-26 while they’re at it.

1. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya… ’nuff said.

You keep knocking down the Haruhigasm for episode skippage! Do you also hate Pulp Fiction or Memento because they don’t go in chronological order? – TheGreatMrChibi

I love Garten and Mentar! Though now I can’t get the sight of the two of them looming over Gimp out of my head. Thanks. I’m Rika myself with a sharp piece of glass after this last comment.

You know what KyoAni should have done? They should have done what GI:Joe did to fans who decoded Cobra’s spellchanting.

“If you are hearing this, you have too much time on your hands.”

Yep, these are my readers.

  1. We please to serve… or serve to please?

I’ll second the nomination of Kare Kano, as I’m totally hooked on the manga. Sadly, Gainax is about the only studio that can (or could) capture Tsuda’s wonderfully wacky facial expressions. More Mushishi is also a metaphysical necessity, and you could probably put out a Card Captor Sakura-esque number of episodes of Nanoha and still keep the fanboys happy.

  2. Since KyoAni has both series, how about Full Haruhi Panic? XD
    GOAL!

  3. >>>Didn’t the Borg Queen try this with Data?

    Assimilated by Haruhi…

Would join her collective any day…

  4. >>I have yet to find a decent space armada simulation game. Homeworld is probably the “best.”

Well they did streamline the interface in Homeworld 2.

    >>Didn’t the Borg Queen try this with Data?

    Resistance is futile Kyon…

    >>Assimilated by Haruhi…Would join her collective any day…

At least you’ll be directly connected to Mikuru, Imouto-san, Yuki, Fang-tan, and Haruhi-sama. Also like the Borg Haruhi will deem some groups to be unworthy of assimilation thus not lets all be one a’la EVA bull shit.

    >>Evangelion… Gainax needs one or two more He Is My Master-class disasters, and we’ll be seeing another Evangelion series. (I’m guessing it’ll be a harem comedy.) It’ll pay the bills.

Nah, they’ll just release the Weapons Grade Plutonium edition before that. Besides they must redo the atrocity that was Kare Kano 19-26 plus those multiple fillers grrr…

    >>Magical Teenager Lyrical Nanoha… I’m looking forward to Nanoha’s melonp… err… I mean… the competent English voicework. Yeah, that’s it. No one will suspect a thing…

Innovative magic system would have worked better…

Why not vent your frustration by joining the siege of Kyoto in the post Kanon period? You can even name your own siege tower, I am working on a Greek Fire recipe as we speak. If Mikuru and LOL Fang-tan blurt out Goshujin-sama there is nothing the cast of Kanon could to to top that.

  5. Oh, there’s already an Evangelion harem comedy, it’s a manga called Evangelion: Angelic Days.
    Check it out.

This link should give a better comparison of the CSociety’s President and Desslock from Yamato.

If you rewatch Ep11, you will notice not only the cup, but how KyoAni intentionally adjusted the lighting so that his skin colour would match too.

  7. Argh! My bad, I forgot to close my HTML tag.

    OTL

Really wish there was an edit option…

  8. >> He whines and loses like him too. I think just to complete the effect, Yuki needs to impale him with a beam saber.

Nah – they should’ve used a huge beam-cannon instead of a missile, so they could fry him Murata Azrael style. Remember – the beam blew the bridge apart, THEN overloaded the engines and killed the ship.

And no, Sagara couldn’t survive Chidori, Tess, AND Haruhi – he couldn’t survive Haruhi by himself, given her ‘reality alteration’ abilities. Only Kyon can keep HER under control… and if Kyon can do that, he could probably whip half of Amalgam by himself, given that level of ability.

  9. Blastphemy. Haruhi is greatest costume raping Mikuru.

    /raise eyebrows

  14. Mecha anime is infested with blue and red and white horned mechs who go into berserk mode for no apparent reason resulting in the end of the battle. Bullshit.

And sorry for the eliticism but if you don’t get Pani Poni Dash, you ain’t an elite.

  15. It’s just you. ;)

Aya Hirano has a cute voice. Suits tsundere quite well. To her detriment though, I will now forever associate her voice with Haruhi’s and therefore doom all her future roles by dismissing them as “not Haruhi”

#1. Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony for the WIN! I wonder if the music chief had the 20 CD Mravinsky’s Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra Recordings set as both Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich’s piece is in it and it even has some works by Debussy ( used in the beginning of the episode ) as well.

#2 My wife thinks Gonzo’s Solty Rei to be better than almost all the series that is running right now. Better than Fate S/N and Suzumiya Haruhi. I guess it is a PARENT thing.

  20. (quote) Top Ten Series in Desperate Need of More Episodes (end quote)

I nominate Fruits Basket. The funniest part in the manga, ‘Cinderellatic Story’ has not been animated, although it was voice-dramatized.

  21. (quote) For reference, this is the original page that discusses “The 4 Revolutions of Anime” (end quote)

I’m afraid the author’s knowledge of anime history is VERY LACKING. He clearly is using only the animations known in the English speaking parts of the world and fails to recognize that majority of anime revenues are generated by people who seldom speaks English. Using the three criterions, I can name following series that is on par, if not more compared to the 4 mentioned.

    1. Literary Masterpiece Theater Series : This is like PBS special all the educators in the US forcefeed their students. Its greatest innovation and inspiration is that it introduced the lesser known works of REAL MASTERS into the world of anime. It was hugely profitable as this series was something that got through all those censorships in Korea and China without a scratch, so before 90s, it was one of most profitable anime ventures in the world. This series may potentially be more inspirational then any of the 4 series mentioned in the article

    2. Mazinger Z: The Godzilla of super mecha anime. Super Mecha series might not have existed without the success of this. In Korea, this is the anime that everyone, even your grandmothers knows. It used to be like that in Japan and China until the 90s, again a major cutoff time in anime consciousness. This is the series that inspired 3 of the 4 series on the list and when adjusted for inflation, may be more commercially successful compared to any of them

    3. Boy from Future Conan: If you want to mention the earliest and biggest commercial success of Hayao Miyazaki, you start with this. It contains almost all the cliche boy-girl dynamic that gets copied by something like half the anime in the 80s. This was the series that spawned all those bleak future trying to regain the glory of technology series. Commercially, this is the Miyazaki’s series with the biggest international recognition until 1995. To those in the knows, the REAL criticism against Miyazaki and people related to him is that all their work is a spin-off from the base Conan ideas; this means Naussica, Fist of the North Star, even the Third which is airing right now. Ghibli and many other animation companies would not have come into existance without the success of this series in Asia

    4. Touch.

    a. Inovation: Character dynamic and type – see Asakura Minami. If you want to study the proper timing and flow of dialogues and scenes, this is the series you have to study. It is incredible how different and emotionally intense the same scene and dialogue can be just by adjusting the break time between two scenes and dialogues.
    b. Inspiration: Sports Ani now can has a real soul. If H2 wasn’t so badly done, Adachi Mitsuru might still be reigning supreme in the anime sports world. Even Suzumiya Haruhi series pays tribute to this series.
    c. Commercially: This series has recorded TV ratings that has been seldom matched by other series. This series’s Female fan base alone used to be more numerous compared to almost all other anime series’s total fan base and it still have as much, if not more male fans compared to female fans.

    5. Kimagure Orange Road : ( will have to take a bath after writing something in favor of this despicable series )

    1. Innovations: The first modern looking ( looking like the ones of today ) OP and ED scenes.Increase of anime quality for non-mecha series
    2. Inspiration: The first popular MOE type girlfriend in record: Hikaru
The first popular Tsundere-goddess type girl in record: Ayukawa Madoka
The first typical modern Harem Master type male lead: Sasuga Kyosuke
    3. Commercial success: 20 years after the series first disgraced the TV screen, its OVA still occupies many DVD space in various anime rental spots in USA. Its songs were immensely popular as well – best set of music, ever, from a series I dislike.

Feel free to air your differences.

  22. 6. Fruits Basket
    7. Azumanga Daioh

I presume most people know of these series. What most people may not know is that these series was a huge hit in Korea and many other Asian Countries as well in the 90s. Its commercial success is typically underestimated by most people.

  23. >> Sadly, Gainax is about the only studio that can (or could) capture Tsuda’s wonderfully wacky facial expressions.

The Gainax of 1999 maybe, but not 2006 Gainax, a shell of its former self. Kyoto Animation (or even Bones) could do a great job with Kare Kano.

    >> Better than Fate S/N and Suzumiya Haruhi.

Most series are better than FSN. Series is brutal for anyone who played the game. No clue why people give it so much leeway,

    >> Whippersnapper! Get offa my lawn!

    Drop-kicked. – Oharuhi-sama

  24. Not that I doubt you or anything, but that 1-7 list is quite a reach considering Evangelion or Doraemon is nowhere to be found.

  25. >>> The Gainax of 1999 maybe, but not 2006 Gainax, a shell of its former self. Kyoto Animation (or even Bones) could do a great job with Kare Kano.

Yeah, definitely not the Gainax of today. Given the job Bones is doing on Ouran, I think they could do a great job with Kare Kano. That would thoroughly make up for the run of mediocre anime they went through awhile back (Mars Daybreak, anyone?)

  26. >> The Gainax of 1999 maybe, but not 2006 Gainax, a shell of its former self. Kyoto Animation (or even Bones) could do a great job with Kare Kano.

I wonder what the coup de grace will be that finally brings them down. So longa as there are fewer recaps and better budeget managemeent the only place left is up.

Not that I doubt you or anything, but that 1-7 list is quite a reach considering Evangelion or Doraemon is nowhere to be found.
    [/quote]

If you mean my list, here is further explanation.

#1. Evangellion is already in the 4 list, on to which I was trying to add. Despite my distaste for the series, I am not arguing whether or not it deserves to be included in the top 4 most influential anime ever. My real beef is that there are other series the author of the article fails to even mention, which are as important as the 4 animes he lists. To be more specific, he has over rated Yamato and Macross. In my view, the most influential are Atom of 60s, Mazinger Z of 70s, Gundam of 80s, and Evangellion of the 90s. Of course, I am conveniently forgetting the blasphemous existence of Sailor Moon and Pokemon.

#2. Forgetting to add Doraemon is my fault. Mea culpa, mea Culpa, mea Maxima Culpa. Ideo precor beatam Mikuru, beatum Itsuki, beatum Kyon, sanctos Yuki, omnes Fandom, et te anime, orare pro me ad Haruhi tsundere nostrum.

#3. We have to also consider the impact an anime has to people don’t give a care. The series like Pokemon has such an influence in the market, that you have to be living in a cave to not know of its existence. Before 1990s, Literary Masterpiece theater is the only anime series that faced no objection from parents in Korea and Japan; It was much encouraged as a easy way to get aquainted with classic literary works like Anne of Green Gable and Tom Sawyer. Mazinger Z’s popularity in Korea is well documented as it still is mentioned even in political columns. Touch was the piece that shed tears unnumbered from countless people in the 80s. Orange Road is the root of many evils in anime series of today. Although Urusei Yatsura popularized the Harem Concept, its character dynamic was unique and unusuable in the H-games, but No backbone male of Orange Road was the ideal choice for majority of H-games that appeared in the 90s. Unless you add the 4th category of Current( year 2006 ) name recognition, which the author did not, I believe my list is well justified, except for the failure to mention Doraemon, as animes that should be placed ahead of Yamato, and along side Macross. Gundam and Evangellion do rate ahead of all seven I listed, however.

  29. This is one sexy LOL-tan

  31. ANN lists Literary Masterpiece Theater as ‘ World Masterpiece Theater ‘. Do check out the names of staff in various series. You will see many famous names had their hand on this series which started at 1969 to 1997. When a series lasts 27 and half years, it is both successful and influential.

  32. Yakisoba costume looks like this doesnt it?
