melancholy of haruhi suzumiya 12 discussion

Busy time of the year for me. Still, Mikuru-run moe modes are always on my mind.

(Best. Website. Ever.)

Watching the episode yet again, there’s a few things that I had missed:

image

DOWN Sausage fests… notice that the entire crowd for Mikuru-run 0 were male and wore glasses. Can’t be a coincidence.

image

UP Guitars… once again, Kyoto Animation goes the extra mile.

Wow, I had a blast plowing through all 70+ comments, thought took a bit longer than normal. Maybe if I did a Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya/Belldandy vs Haruhi Dr Jack style, I could have reached Slashdot levels for a post. Anyway, let’s begin with one of my favorite comments, only because I’m kicking myself for not realizing it sooner:

Itsuki was performing in a translation of Tom Stoppard’s play “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead”, an excellent but strange story about two minor characters in Hamlet.

The scene we see is about Guildenstern attempting to explain why he’s flipped a coin 30ish times in a row and gotten heads every time. – rikchik

At first, I thought it was from Waiting for Godot, and I flipped through my Godot reference, didn’t find it, and gave up/moved on/got distracted by Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. So it was from Rosencrantz… great play. Caught it once at the Stratford Festival when I was in high school. Thanks for pointing it out. My English teacher would be rolling in her grave if she were dead.

Did anyone catch the fact that Itsuki is ‘The Player’ in the play ‘Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead’ during this ep? I mean the people who are bringing us Haruhi have written/produced a deep, deep nest of easter eggs, red herrings, and cross references like nothing I have ever seen!- Jesterman

Sorry, rikchik beat you to it. You’re 30 comments to late.

(Nonetheless, I completely agree that Kyoto Animation are currently the kings of Easter Egging their anime. The best part is that I know that with such a complex and well-thought out anime, the odds that Funimation is going to license it and butcher that crap out of it and then include trailers for Naruto and DBZ on the DVD must be at least 2-to-1. Maybe better.)

Win and gold, simply win and gold. There was a point when I was wondering if Haruhi was really *that* great, but now I’m wondering which show I’ll have to drop from my top 5 list to make room. – Symmetry

All of them. My Top 10 (TV series only) list now looks like:

1. Haruhi.
2. Haruhi.
3. Haruhi.
4. Haruhi.
5. Haruhi.
6. Escaflowne.
7. Evangelion.
8. Amaenaideyo.
9. Kenshin 1-49.
10. Kamichu.

Odly it felt like very little happened this ep. – SH

I feel the same way about all 26 episodes of Mai Otome, 24 episodes of Fate/Stay/Lack of Lesbian Fanservice, 13 episodes of Magikano, 9 episodes of REC, and, of course, all 500 episodes of DBZ.

This was a rather slow episode IMO, concert notwithstanding. Very To Heart-ish, I think. In that its school life, a minor conflict happends and then the episode is how the protagonists react to it. Very nice. – zero

Mmm… I was hoping Haruhi would get on stage and right before the second song, jump and scream… “HA-RU-CHU!” In any case, some of us like good slice-of-life. *sniff* Alpha *sniff*

This episode wins best episode of anything of the year. – Randall Fitzgerald

A challenger appears!

Every time I think Kyo has made “the best episode yet” they outdo themselves the next week. LOL-FANG, waitress Mikuru, the stunned faces of the movie club, the concert, OMG the concert!! I couldn’t believe they had the animation synched, and made it sound just like it was in an auditorium. And a human Haruhi! Shy! Needing Kyon for support! – ubu roi

Mmm… with two episodes left, what’s everyone’s favorite episode thus far? For me, Mikuru-run 00 just because I expected _nothing_ out of this series, had no clue why I even downloaded the file, had no clue why I clicked on the file, but once I saw Mikuru in a bunny outfit, I was hooked. (Unlike, oh, Kagihime.) 24 minutes later, I re-watched the episode to make sure I saw what I saw… while Haruhi isn’t auditioning to become a director for Sunrise, she has become as megalomaniac as any Sunrise director.

And to close this post…goddammit…I can’t stop listening to Koi no Mikuru Denseetsu…it’s so addicting… – [schism]

Koi no MAGIC Mikuru-run-run!

I have to say, I was very, very impressed by this episode. Given the responses by others here, I have to admit that I envy them a bit, since I don’t have the opportunity to hear it, due to my deafness. But what the show lacked in sounds for me, it blew me away with animation quality and attention to detail. … In any case, I really loved this episode. Definitely my favorite now, in addition to Day of Sagittarius and Someday in Rain episode. – Dark Alpha

Haruhi Suzumiya’s awesomeness is like Tom Cruise’s craziness. Just when you think one can’t get more awesomer/crazier, they go and surprise you. All we need is to get Haruhi on Oprah somehow.

In the first episode, Haruhi and Kyon are two extreme opposite in personality. Kyon was like the feather-in-the-wind: he goes where the wind blows, while Haruhi was … well … megalomaniac. But as time went on, they seem to absorb each other’s personalities and both become more balance. Now, Kyon is more assertive while Haruhi is more agreeable with others. – justanothergirl

I think they’re turning into an old married couple. I can only imagine Stay-at-Home Mom Haruhi berating Salaryman Kyon for not getting some promotion, as daughter little Yuki-chan reads The Velocity of Honey living room. Of course, Salaryman Kyon would be getting drunk everynight before going home, and Stay-at-Home Mom Haruhi would be cheating on Kyon with Mikuru. Is there such a thing as having too active of an imagination?

The first song was incredible. Aya Hirano is just… wow. – zero

Amen!

A very sweet and incredibly enjoyable episode! :D
I gotta agree with all the plusses for Kyoto Animation and Aya Hirano. So much goodness should be illegal. – t3h Dave

Haruhullah!

God, when Haruhi hit the scream-y part on the second verse, chills ran up my spine as if I was at a real concert. – [schism]

Praise Oharuhi-sama!

Haruhi sure sings well…or is that an understatement? – BeLe

Can you believe Aya Hirano’s last major role was Kiddy Grade‘s Lumiere? Wasn’t that like two-three years ago? Thanks to her Haruhi, I think she joins the pantheon of top tier seiyuu.

(Though now I have images of Haruhi drinking “grape juice.”)

Kyon said in the anime[07:00-07:03], “Anyway… enjoy the cultural festival. In a normal fashion.” – Skane

Excellent observation. I can only imagine the Kyoto Animation staff giggling as they put that line in.

hard gay ftw =D – wackedfoo

If you say so.

Yuki in that outfit playing the guitar was the coolest thing I’ve seen on the series so far. – Squid Man

Cowering Mikuru begs to differ.

May I ask you where do you get the HDTV versions of the episodes? – Ed

#SEKAIWOOOINIMORIAGERUTAMENOSUZUMIYAHARUHINODAN on Rizon. Best resource for Haruhi Suzumiya fans, period. You may even find me lurking there.

“it’s not how clark kent become superman, but how superman becomes clark kent.” This series is a prime example of that, and i love it. – kei-clone

It’s not how the Miami Heat won the NBA championship, but how the refs helped them win it. Wow, that sentence structure has a lot of topside.

it may just be me but, in an ealier/later episode, doesn’t yuki make a quick glance to a guitar in the clubroom? – ziphad

I don’t think they were ever in the clubroom this episode. Got a timestamp?

And quite a few comments about LOL FANG-TAN this week:

First off, can someone explain to me why Tsuruya is being called LOL-FANG? – justanothergirl

I explained this a few times already, I might as well add it to AoMM’s meme page. Around episode 9, people on various forums and messageboards kept debating whether or not her meme was LOL-TAN or FANG-TAN. I thought it was a dumb argument, so I proposed a compromise: LOL FANG-TAN.

I noticed LOL-FAN-TAN added “nyorou” to the end of one of her lines for seemingly just sort of out of the blue… is there a reason for that? – Xeifa

See following:

After an exhausting, heart-straining, intensive 3 minutes of research of the term, “Nyoro nyoro” it seems to be the Japanese onomatopoeia of something wiggling, slithering or squirming (like a snake or tadpole). From that, “nyoro” can also be used in place of “tilde”~~~ such as how it can be called “the squiqqle thing” or whatever.

So yeah, she could just be saying the colloquialism for the tilde out loud. Or something else entirely. (cute in any case!) – Squabie

Awesome. I’m going to start using this phrase at work… “the gm of these mosfets suck nyoro nyoro.” nyoro will become the new desu desu.

image

Mikuru and Tsuruya were incredibly hawt this ep. I think LOL-FANG-TAN has just overtaken Shion/Mion as the hottest green haired chick this season. crazed killers. I think we need a poll on this. hawtest green haired character. LOL-FANG-TAN would just sweep. – zero

I’ll cut you some slack and assume that it’s instant history talking here… but how can you forget Angel Mort Shion?!?

And the blatantly obvious ZONE tribute which is why the anime band has 4 members where as the novel version had only 3; all 4 members of ENOZ have names similar to their actual ZONE counterpart and play the exact same instruments…I love KyoAni. – Saku

I’m just glad that they didn’t pick Glay, Smap, or any of the j-pop bands that I can’t stand. Since I have never heard any song from ZONE, can someone recommend me a few? I’m curious now.

People at 2ch were saying that during the concert(especially when using close up views such as Nagato playing the guitar & Haruhi’s *dreadful* look) frame rate increases to 24fps, typical OVA frame rate(so if you slow down the clip, you can still see Nagato tapping the guitar with her fingers, instead of some blurry frames); if that’s true then KyoAni really puts a lot of thought in promoting this single. – DF

Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has always averaged a pretty high frame rate (go watch episode 10’s epic battle). Even more apparent if you watch something like the dreadfully animated ああっ女神さまっ ~それぞれの翼~ right beforehand. Still, with Kyoto being a complete digital house, it shouldn’t be hard for them to crank out anime in 24fps. Honestly, I prefer HD Haruhi in 24fps than HD Munto in 24,000fps.

Regarding the whole concert, KyoAni’s now just showing off. Insane detail. Something Sunrise can only dream about. – zero

I think Sunrise uses 24fps for every beam saber impalement scene. They sure don’t skimp on that! (Sunrise animators aren’t horrible… AIC is horrible… poor Belldandy… they need to remake that series ASAP only with Bell being a megalomaniac goddess, Urd’s a time traveler from the future, Skuld’s a thought integration entity, and, of course, Rena and Mion chasing down Morisato with butcher’s knives and nails every four episodes. That could become the greatest animation series ever if they work in some sort of father-daughter love triangle…)

Did the lyrics to the music sound like what was going on in the anime and stuffo? i dunno – me of course

Considering that Mikuru-run 0 gave away every important plot point thus far, sounds perfectly logical. I’m wondering if the lyrics were spelled out in the novels now.

So, despite Haruhi and Yuki’s VALIANT efforts, there were very small discrepencies that the audience picked up subconsiciously but couldn’t quite identify. With that announcement, all that confusion was relieved/cleared up for Kyon and co. And they then think: if the songs are THIS good with make-shift members, then the songs performed by the ACTUAL members would be even better!

– That’s the novel’s explanation on why ENOZ’s originals were so popular. – Saku

It’s like if I go see Phantom of the Opera, and Graham Bickley is filling in for Michael Crawford, aren’t they dead out of the gate? (For people who don’t know, comparing Bickley to Crawford is like comparing a Toyota Camry to a Mercedes SLK.) Who’d buy a Phantom CD after that catastrophe? If it were the opposite, wouldn’t people want Haruhi’s singing? Logic is approaching Sunrise-level here.

image

Mizuki was winking at Haruhi too when Nakanishi referred to Kyon as Haruhi’s friend. – Skane

Friend… with benefits! Is there an equivalent Japanese saying for that one?

hey jason, care to tell me what dareshi means ? : ) – 74

Kareshi (彼氏) has an interesting etymology. The Japanese language, in its natural form, does not have objects like English. No “he,” “she,” etc… so of course, after WWII, the American occupational forces tried to insert words like kareshi as objects into the language. However, as time passes, it is now used to indicate “boyfriend” rather than “he.” Kinda like the first time I heard, “otaku”… wait, he’s calling him a “house”? I was confused.

Jason, I’d wondered about the MDs as well myself. I don’t recongize that term – ‘Music Discs’? Or something else? – Dark Alpha

Mini-Discs. Sony had a winning medium with this… it was smaller than a CD, but still could hold a hundred or two megs of data, and, most importantly, one of Sony’s few formats that had no DRM. If Sony pushed MD as a data storage medium (since CD burners were still hella expensive then), it could have done well in the US. But, alas, MD became the format of choice for music lovers in Asia due to its small size.

Only one complaint to another great episode: The music score shown could not match the actual music in the performance. It actually looked like a full orchestral score instead of 4 member band score. – wontaek

This gets the “girls cutting down hawter girls” award, you know, when girls gather and decide things like, “Lisa Kudrow was the cutest girl on Friends” or “she must have paid for those boobs.” I listened to God Knows Oharuhi-sama knows how many times, and I can’t count more than (1) bass (2) guitar and (3) drums/cymbal in the musical background.

The guy at KyoAni who chose Kanon over Haruhi, must be rolling all over the floor right now! – Nemo_N

Make sure you tease every blogger who rejoiced when it was announced that Kanon would be starting in the Fall. Looking back on it, it would rank somewhere…

1. Isiah Thomas gives away two lottery picks (which might have become Roy and Oden) for Eddy Curry.
2. English language anime bloggers rejoice at Kyoto Animation’s decision to remake Kanon.
3. Isiah Thomas signs Jerome James to $30 million contract.
4. Isiah Thomas offers Larry Brown $50 million contract.

As for a second season, I don’t think KyoAni made any official announcements yet, but judging by the popularity of Haruhi and that there are PLENTY of stories left in the novels for a second season, there *should* be a second season. – Saku

So Kanon begins 26-ish episodes this Fall, so that takes up to next Summer as the earliest we’ll see more Haruhi. And that’s assuming Kyoto doesn’t do something else or work on more Full Metal Panic (their real cash cow). Honestly, I think we should start collection donations that if Kyoto scraps Kanon and starts cranking out more Haruhi for Winter, they’ll get the $. I think I can raise at least $20, maybe even $25, for this cause.

This was the best concert ever in an anime. Even outdoing dedicated music shows like Full Moon and Beck. – Fencedude

I was about to say The Minmay Defense, but it looks like someone beat me to it:

Actually the anime concert ever would have to be Lynn Menmei form Macross the Movie: Do You Remeber Love. – Xellos-_^

Both Minmay and whats-her-name from Macross 7 saved the human race by singing. If Haruhi’s singing prevented yet another closed space incident, then, yes, she ranks up there, but unless she saves the human race, she’s stuck a notch behind Minmay.

And Minmei has nothing on Haruhi. Haruhi’s a deity. Minmei’s just shrill and annoying. – zero

Minmay saved the human race! She has her own meme, The Minmay Defense. What more could one ask for? Actually, let’s settle this with a Google Battle… as of right now, Minmay Defense pwned Haruhigasm. Though I’m giddy that haruhigasm is catching on. AoMM’s finest contribution to the meme community.

This episode makes the Macross 7 referance last episode so awesome– it bridged the space fighting of episode 11 with the singing of episode 12! Brilliant! – TheGreatMrChibi

People should also remember that before Minmay was able to save the world, Risa and Hikaru saved a good number of SDF pilots by smooching. Parallels with Haruhi and Kyon two episodes from now?

My reaction was “Is that a Keroro Gunso reference?” as one of the Keronian’s natural enemies is the moisture-sucking nyororos. – Zyl

I owe you a drink for that one (assuming you’re 21).

Did the instrumental that the orchestra was performing before Haruhi’s live sounded really famaliar… or is it just me? – Xeifa

Did anyone else think that the music the orchestra was playing when Kyon entered the auditorium sounded familiar? – Fencedude

And as for the music playing when Kyon first walks into the auditorium, we finally have an answer:

The wind orchestra piece that was being played as Kyon entered the auditorium is supposedly an original arrangement of Kaze no Mai (Dancing in the Wind) by Y.Fukuda. Info gotten from 4chan. – Fat Cat Lim

I think that question collectively stumped the English anime community for a good 72 hours. I bet Pani Poni Dash‘s director is pissed that they weren’t able to accomplish such a feat.

(I’m glad to see that we can mobilize the entire English anime community for something like this. If these powers can be used for good, I’m sure we can hammer out some Middle East peace agreement.)

image

Ain’t gonna happen. Itsuki’s fruitier than Carmen Miranda’s hat.
Unless she chops her hair like Kyon’s and develops a slender teenage boy’s frame, she’ll get no lovin’ from Itsuki. – Baka-Kun

Speechless.

KyoAni changed a lot of the details of the scene, a little unusual since they have stuck very close to the novels most of the time. I’m guessing they made the changes just to make the scene more visually exciting. I’m glad they let Haruhi rock out a bit. – Sphinx

Is Itsuki gay in the novels too?

Honestly, after seeing Man-Mashiro die in Mai Otome manga at the hands of Mr Wong, I think the “manga is better than anime,” “h-game is better than anime,” or “short novel is better than anime” battle is over and done with. Most of the time, anime butchers the source material, like giving Belldandy a job at AM PM, introducing father/daughter incest, or take away F/SN‘s infamous threesome. After reading more of Higurashi‘s manga, I’m beginning to realize how much they cut out to fit each arc into four episodes, and I’m sad. I’d be happy if they just one or two arcs (like Shuffle) but did them well. I’d also be happy with a beach episode.

Mitsuki wishes she could play a crowd like Haruhi can. – Fencedude

Come for the Bunny Girl, stay for the j-rock!

Besides, any episode that has Tsuruya and Mikuru in meido-waitress uniforms can’t be bad… – Haesslich

Mikuru had less than a minute of screentime! Couldn’t they at least have her go to the auditorium, stand next to Kyon all wet yet still in her yakisoba outfit, and start to rub against him? Just to see what kind of reaction wet-waitress Mikuru fliriting with Kyon would be evoked from Haruhi. Opportunity… wasted.

Aw… no comments on Haruhi’s emo-tortion? – Skane

Just normal singing face. It’s like not Mikuru-run was rubbing her wet body against Kyon.

Rejoice! Bunnygirl Haruhi returns!
And now we got another thing to add to Haruhi’s repoirtoir (in addition to supreme fleet commander, supreme director, supreme detective, supreme club leader, and Goddess): rockstar
Though she I hate to admit this, she didn’t look too good in some of the close-ups from while she’s singing… it’s about *this* close away from becoming a emo contortion. – Xeifa

Again, to be an emo facial contortion, there must be emo. There’s no emo in singing. That’s just a normal face… and I fully wanted to see it on Mitsuki when she gave her final concert as Full Moon. That would have been the only proper ending to the story.

(BTW, I’m not sure what this means, but Full Moon 52 has somehow become AoMM’s most controversial post. While I didn’t get a death threat like for Jackie Chan’s The Myth, I have received a lot of angry comments and e-mails about it. The best part is that it’s the gift that never stops giving… it’s been almost a year, and I still catch flak for it.)

Kyon got bored with Mikuru, or bored with Maid in general. – DF

Most alarming comment that I have ever received. How can anyone with a traditional y-chromosome be bored with Meido Mikuru? I can stare at that ass and those melonpan till I’m the only person in the nursin’ home flirtin’. Speaking of alarming comments…

LOL-Fang-tan was great I love her hair toss. I just wish Haruhi drafted the band as well and LOL-Fang-tan. Great music ensemble cast sure fire win. Grass in face Haruhi-sama was kawaii. – Crusader

The second most alarming comment. A less than 500 word comment from Crusader? Wow. I was going to call 911 because something must be up.

(But I agree. LOL FANG-TAN needs to be involved more. We need to get Haruhi to costume rape her, only she laughs so much, Haruhi gets a puzzled look, stops, and goes back to costume raping Mikuru. Only this time, a sexy French meido outfit is involved.)

That isn’t to say they too don’t flub– the ED dance at the very end is absolutely hideous animation-wise– but Haruhi’s singing was a goddamn PERFORMANCE. It was beautiful. – TheGreatMrChibi

*watches Enma Ai ferry TheGreatMrChibi off to hell.*

I got the impression that this was all interior monologue on Kyon’s part, rather than anything he said out loud. – Futaba-chan

Happens a lot throughout the series. I think it’s a remnant of the storytelling style… Kyon is more of a narrator than a participant. Of course, it also could by that Kyon is really dreaming up Haruhi a la Tyler Durden (my favorite dark horse theory, next to Mikuru has been sent back to mother a child for Kyon who will one day grow up and lead the human resistance against the machines).

Next week’s episode returns to when Haruhi was still a megalomaniac, so it will provide a nice contrast of how far she has come since her introduction in episode 2. – Fat Cat Lim

She’s still a megalomaniac. Was. Is. Always will be. It’s like even though Lacus tamed Kira, he still itches to hop into Freedom and press all those shiny buttons. Or even Heero having this weird urge to self-destruct every 20 episodes or so.

I applaud you jason, for your great blogging… my kyon of anime, alas, i wont be able to make you uncomfortable to talk to your face 2 inches away. You have made my voyage through this series more insightful, enightinging, but mostly goddamn funny. Let us hope for the last episode leave us with a reoccurence of multiple haruhigasms to stain our keyboards forever. FUMOFFU! – korockid

Good time to mention that I’m leaving for a two week vacation at someplace called “Mosquito Falls.” In other words, I expect zero Internet access, plenty of itchiness, and, of course, zero Haruhi Suzumiya. AoMM returns with episodes 13 and 14 in mid-July.

(I hope to crank out at least one more Killer Loli post before I leave though. And, as always, I’ll have posts queued up.)

Secondly, is it too late for Haruhi to kidnap Mizuki, the band drummer, and force her into the SOS-dan? I mean all the hawt girls seem to congregate in the SOS Brigade so why isn’t she in it? This would give Haruhi a drummer for her band as well so it’s a win situation all around! And that black choker that Mizuki had on was just too hawt. Chokers FTW! – Alpha123

Yep, these are my readers.

  1. I see you discovered Kyon’s secret stash. :D Pity he’d hidden most of the really GOOD photos, alas.

As far as the episode goes – the first song of the concert was the best part, due to the shock factor that having Haruhi perform WELL gave the audience (and Kyon), especially when she really got into the role and sang her heart out. The second song… wasn’t bad but it just didn’t have the same punch as God Knows.

I do wonder if Haruhi was behind the bad weather, which drove everyone inside to the concert…

  2. Incidentally, I rewatched Ep 11 after this, to get things correct in the chronological order – and I have to wonder why Kyon wishes to forget Bunny Singer Haruhi and Tsuruya-in-meido (or for that matter, the rest of the cafe) a few days later (Ep 11). It’s a pity she (Mikuru) didn’t get much screentime, but Tsuruya helped make up for that somewhat… but not as much as a scene with Mikuru tripping with a few glasses of water flying all over the room and spilling onto her uniform would’ve. ;)

  3. I’m surprised I read through all that.
Let me know when you need any Dr. Jack thing ;)

  4. >>I don’t think they were ever in the clubroom this episode. Got a timestamp?

To be honest, I only *truly* like Sotsugyou out of all of their songs I have; their genre is just not my cup of tea. Sotsugyou, however, rules so much. Especially its PV.

One of them is from the Computer Society. In the screenshot that you put up, he is the second guy up on the rightmost. You can compare his mug with Ep11 when the Computer Society visited the SOS clubroom.

He also reappeared in the queue for the Yakisoba.

  8. Oddly, I did feel that not much happened in this episode, but that diddn’t stop it from being easily one of the best. The challange now, of course, is to beat that in the next 2 episodes.

She looks like death, LOL-Fang-tan at least looks healthy and has a chance of getting Mikuru-ran to listen to her. She won’t kill you and is more fun to hang around than twins that have no concept of sharing.

Actually I was called up for work (your powers of precention are great Haruhi-sama has bleesed thee) and since I live in the ass end of SF (Hunter’s Point) I have no high speed internet connection (56k is the best I can get). So barring a sparse few weekends up in college most commenting will be using a Military workstation after liberty gets called or during a lunch break (terse is the word, and laconic is order of the day). The orders I just got have given a coup de grace to graduating on time. No need to call 911, thankfully your blog is not putting up flags with DHS. By the grace of our lady I can still drive all the way up to Sac to BT the last Haruhi ep, Gas be damned Haruhigasms are worth it.

I wonder if commenting on strawberry panic or using the word Yayoi from now on will land me an investigation or just create fan boys out of USCGI…

Enjoy your vacation and I look forward to what witty remarks you’ll have about the summer season. At least you’re going to a place that may be fun I have a 2 week “vacation” at San Pedro (heavily polluted from LA) after a road trip in a cramped government van. All I can hope for at best is a Humvee to roll around in.

And dammit, she should have said “kareshi”! I’d have loved to see Haruhi’s and Kyon’s reaction.

…Have a nice time at the Mosquito Falls o_o.

Crap. *goes to look at the LOL-FANG-TAN Yakisoba pic.

    Looks at Shion cosplay pic

Dammit, to hell with this. Why choose when you can have both?

Btw, speaking of bad news, we probably have seen the last of LOL-FANG-TAN in this series/season. The next two episodes are episodes 5 and 6. LOL-FANG-TAN was introduced episode 7. Join me in wailing.

  12. Btw, jason, what an utterly horrible time to go on a vacation. Missing BOTH episodes 13 and 14?

  13. >>I’m surprised I read through all that.

    Me too.

    >>Btw, jason, what an utterly horrible time to go on a vacation. Missing BOTH episodes 13 and 14?

    Feeling the same here. :).

  14. >>>>I’m surprised I read through all that.

    >>Me too.

    ditto.

    >>*watches Enma Ai ferry TheGreatMrChibi off to hell.*

    >>*waves*

offering your soul? Take mine too.

    >>Good time to mention that I’m leaving for a two week vacation at someplace called “Mosquito Falls.”

*remembers that he has enough frequent flyer miles to get Jason to Hawaii instead round trip*
HURRY! CALL YOUR TRAVEL AGENT! Dont worry, I’ll get you a seperate room, and I have a few contacts in hawaii who do helicopter tours. My skypass card number is 576******08.

Oh crap. It’s not going to be the same. WHY!? I remember about that; you posted that a few days ago… I wonder if I could hold off watching the episodes til you watch them…

No. Nope. No way. Sorry Jason. ~_~; HAHAHAHAAHA. Korean ADSL gives torrents 1mbs downloads with 2 seeds… I’ll be getting spammed with “Error: the movie file is broken” until the download is done.

    >>I’m not a homosexual, I just enjoy sex with men.

    Sorry, but you’re wrong/crazy.

    >>#SEKAIWOOOINIMORIAGERUTAMENOSUZUMIYAHARUHINODAN on Rizon. Best resource for Haruhi Suzumiya fans, period. You may even find me lurking there.

Whats your screenname there? Mine’s finalfantasyforever. gotta love irc… may god/buddah/allah/suzumiya haruhi bless all the bots

  15. “Minmay saved the human race! She has her own meme, The Minmay Defense. What more could one ask for? Actually, let’s settle this with a Google Battle… as of right now, Minmay Defense pwned Haruhigasm. Though I’m giddy that haruhigasm is catching on. AoMM’s finest contribution to the meme community.:

Actually when I just google battled it, Minmay Defense lost rather easily.

  16. Cool, I just Googled them too.

Based on ratio, Haruhigasm beats Minmay Defense 3:1.

  17. >>A less than 500 word comment from Crusader? Wow. I was going to call 911 because something must be up.

It DOES seem that way, don’t it? *lopsided grin* Amazing ability to construct humongously massive replies FTW.

  18. >> My Top 10 (TV series only) list now looks like:
    >> 8. Amaenaideyo.

    Yep, this is the author.

  19. > Can you believe Aya Hirano’s last major role was Kiddy Grade’s Lumiere?

More like her first major role (excepting Tenshi no Shippo, but I can’t even remember her character). She’s had a few since (most of them quite recent mind) but this is the first I’ve actually watched and I think most of the others she’s been just a regular character, not the lead.

  20. Quote: “the gm of these mosfets suck nyoro nyoro.”

Ah, so my favorite anime bloger is also an EE! Cool.

They also should set it on a distant planet covered in overly aggressive plant life (with some frog-like aliens for good measure), surrounded by a fleet of your favorite starships. Or maybe I just want to see meglomaniacal Harushi, when she gets overly emotional, hang off of Kyon and talk about how she wants to bear his child. I can only imagine how the kid would end up.

    Since you’re asking about favorite episodes, perhaps an episode ranking is in order (with a few comments): 1, 12, 2, 7, 10, 6, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9
1 – amazing for foreshadowing, parody, and sarcasm, plus the added buzz factor
12 – I loved how they showed different parts of Haruhi’s and Kyon’s personalities in this one (and it’s interesting how often Kyon’s notices tiny changes in Haruhi’s expression and reacts to them). plus the concert scene just rocks.
2 – the newness factor, since you’re just being introduced to all the characters and have no clue what’s going on – but it seems like anything could happen. plus all the great Kyon sarcasm and Haruhi speeches (Men are potatos!)
7 – I’m still waiting for my Asahina-san Lower Body Workout Kit

There’s still two characters shown in the opening credits that we haven’t met yet (including the talking cat), and I’m really curious to see who they are.

Now please rise as we sing “Haruhi Eleison”

  22. Is anybody else curious as to what Haruhi’s parents are like? Does she even have any?

  23. teki: I can’t see anyone in the op that I don’t recognize. The only character that’s not obvious is the computer club president’s supposed girlfriend from ep 7.

Kalm: To be fair, I think the only family we’ve seen for anyone has been imouto (correct me if I’m wrong, I’m pretty sure we’ve not seen Kyon’s parents). Maybe she’s like Yukito in CCS (although to this day I’m still wondering who changed her clothes in that one ep since he doesn’t have a grandmother…)

  24. >> Sotsugyou, however, rules so much. Especially its PV.

Thanks, listening to it now. Sounds more j-popish than j-rockish.

    >> No need to call 911, thankfully your blog is not putting up flags with DHS. By the grace of our lady I can still drive all the way up to Sac to BT the last Haruhi ep, Gas be damned Haruhigasms are worth it.

Awesome. Bringing Mikuru fanservice to our troops is my new civic duty.

    >> Is anybody else curious as to what Haruhi’s parents are like? Does she even have any?

She does! They’re in the manga…

    >> Based on ratio, Haruhigasm beats Minmay Defense 3:1.

What? I got a score of ~2000 for Minmay Defense and only ~550 for Haruhigasm.

    >> Btw, jason, what an utterly horrible time to go on a vacation. Missing BOTH episodes 13 and 14?

As I said a few weeks ago, I planned my vacation at the beginning of the year (since I have July 4th week off already, so might as well go somewhere). Last time I went off on vacation, you guys got that Best of 2005 feature. I have something planned.

  25. >>(Best. Website. Ever.)

    AGREED!

Woohoo Haruhigasm wins the google battler! :)

Amazing to see that the guitars in the anime are actually real guitars!
Lovin’ the Aya Hirano/Haruhi Desho Desho pic too.
    And more LOL FANG-Tan!

Who knew that LOL-ing could be oh so adorable. :3

  26. Where in the heck is Mosquito Falls? (And what kind of place is called Mosquito Falls anyway?!) Bah, I am just angry because we won’t be able to read your comments on Haruhi for a while. We will be waiting for your Anime Insight once you are back.

Thanks for the “Mikuru Folder” and the guitars shots.

  27. You know…I was really hoping to see Mikuru come up with this crazy skill for the guitar and wear what she wore in the cafe. I had this instance because of how much short (but somewhat sweet) show time she had in the episode I thought Mikuru would at least got into a serious mood and started to rock with the band :P. Oh well you can only hope for more suprises in the last 2 eps.

    Cheers!
    -Jason-

  28. mikuru in the band just doesnt seem very mikuru-ish…

am I the only one who doesn’t see mikuru as a rocker? Her personality just doesn’t fit….

  29. >>> Now please rise as we sing “Haruhi Eleison”

Celebrantes ( in mode IV ): Haruhi fons animetatis, imperatrix securis, quo gaudia cuncta procedunt eleison
    Congregation: Haruhi Eleison
Celebrantes: Kyon emoderor pro gentium eleison
    Congregation: Kyon Eleison
    Celebrates: Haruhi fons gloria eleison
    Congregation: Haruhi Eleison.

    >>> 10. Kamichu.

Another god series that I like.

    >>> “HA-RU-CHU!”
So it was Suzumiya Haruhi who told Hitotsubashi Yurie that she became god…

By the way, since Nagato Yuki is a entity of information, does Yuki become the new face of virtual virtuoso guitarist? I would like to hear how she will play Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen or Recuerdos de la Alhambra (ca. 1899) by Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909)

    http://www.mangore.com/recuerd.....ambra.html

  30. heh… haruhigasm is now ahead on google battle

    minmay defense – 1350

    haruhigasm – 1720

    :D

  31. This is what I get from Google,

    Minmay Defense : 1340 hits
    Haruhigasm : 1770 hits

  32. Google hit results

    Results 1 – 10 of about 41,600 for Lynn Minmei. (0.17 seconds)

    Results 1 – 10 of about 511,000 for Suzumiya Haruhi. (0.30 seconds)

Minmei Attack in TV was bit cheezy. Minmei singing ‘ Ima anata no shisen kanjiru Hanaretetemo,…. ‘ ( 2nd stanza of The main song: Ai, Oboete Imasuka? ) as Zentradi and Meltron fleet lines up with Macross to attack Boddole Zer’s Space Fortress is a scene that will live forever. This is the scene which started the whole anime music record business and all those drama CDs. The Haruhi concert raised the bar on quality of anime music concerts, but, for me, no matter how much inferior that scene in the movie is to the Haruhi concert, it is almost impossible to top the emotional impact of that movie scene. I still get teary eyes when I see the above mentioned scene in the Macross the Movie. For me the top anime pop music performance is,

    1. Lynn Minmei: Love, Remember
    2. Eve ( Megazone 23 ): Wind’s Lullaby ( Kaze no Lullaby )
    3. Eve ( Megazone 23, Part 2 ): Please Tell Me The Secret (Himitsu Kudasai)
    4. The Suzumiya Haruhi Concert.

  33. correction: no matter how much inferior that scene in the movie is to the Haruhi concert

to: no matter how much inferior that scene in the movie is to the Haruhi concert in animation quality

  34. >wontaek:

I seriously doubt anyone over the age of errmm… 25 or has a good grasp of anime history would disagree with you. Minmei singing, Hikaru-Risa-Minmei, Veratech fighters, pretty much all of Macross, is basically one of the foundations that anime inside/outside of Japan is built upon.

  35. jason, for your search, did you use the exact phrase with quotations around minmay defence? defence tends to be used abit… lol

*notices that jason didnt tell me his IRCname…*
    ~_~;

hehe, just got 4 of my friend introduced to SHnY…
lol 3 of them already want to thank me :)

  36. You make me feel old, zero… :P

To me, the one thing from Macross that is burnt into my memory is not the “Minmay Defense”, but Roy Focker.

    “Pineapple Salad”. (Q_Q)

    Minmay Defense made me cringe.

  37. >>After reading more of Higurashi’s manga, I’m beginning to realize how much they cut out to fit each arc into four episodes, and I’m sad.

I hope I’m not spoiling anything, but it seems that Tatarigoroshi-hen gets a 5th episode…

  38. Shiroi Hane: Ack, you’re right, I totally missed that – my bad. Still, from Ep 0 it seems like the cat can talk, and I’d like to know how that works in.

wontaek: For your latin, I’d like to give you a hug, or something ;)

Dynamites! : We need less Keiichi, more killer lolis. Watching Higurashi these days feels like going through a meat grinder.

  39. man lol-fang-tan is HOT!I’d take her like Oyashiro-sama takes those who abandon Hinamizawa. I’d hit her like Keiichi hits lolis and uncles. I’d nail her Sonozaki-style. I’d jam it in like Tomitake’s fingers in his throat. I’d thrust her like a knife in a suicidal loli’s head. I’d jam it in like Rena’s fingers in a door. I want to bludgeon her with my bat and dispose of the evidence in her Onigafuchi Marsh. To stuff her full like the trunk of her car. To moisten her like Oiishi kicking water in Keiichi’s face. To send her in convulsing fits like Keiichi petting Satoko. To have her grip me like Mr. Delicious trying to be intimidating. To pick her lock and trespass upon her festival shrine. To drop my corpse down her well. I’d hit her with the force of Rena’s fist. I’d bury my Kenta-kun in her landfill and then chop it out with a billhook. I’d jolt her like Mion’s stungun. So blazing would our passion be, the fires would be going “bou bou” and fire truck would be going “woo woo”. I’d mangle her like the ending theme and the English language.

  40. @4chan-guy: LOL and gb2/b/

  41. “My Top 10 (TV series only) list now looks like:

    6. Escaflowne.
    7. Evangelion.
    8. Amaenaideyo.
    9. Kenshin 1-49.
    10. Kamichu.”

I’m always dismayed when see someone crossing the line between love and blind fanboyism :(

  42. Nidec: I aagree. Kamichu REALLY didn’t belong on that list. Neither did the series in slots 6-9. :P

Oh, and I second whomever that was speculating that Haruhi caused the rain to drive everyone into the concert. That occured to me at the time too. But something else I caught: Kyon during lunch the next day. Notice how fast he’s gulping his food down, and then he uncharacteristically decides, “for no particular reason, to take a walk to help digest. No. Don’t read too much into it.” Yeah, right…. see how he forces himself to slow down as he leaves the room?

He won’t even admit to himself, he went hunting for Haruhi.

  43. Kamichu belongs.

  44. 4chan-guy: wow… that’s… nice.
ubu roi: hmm, i think kyon was thinking about haruhi, but rather gulped his food down to get away from the annoying rant about the location of the school anf hawt girls…

also, the rain… hmm… i think it was a natural occurence… though it does seem like haruhi caused it, not everything is by haruhi, there still is the other 99% of the world that isnt daily affected by haruhi…

  45. >> Minmei singing, Hikaru-Risa-Minmei, Veratech fighters, pretty much all of Macross, is basically one of the foundations that anime inside/outside of Japan is built upon.

Amen. I still call them “Rick Hunter” and “Lisa Hayes” sometimes. Man, I’m starting to get the shakes for some Macross. (BTW, Macross was the first VHS fansub I had ever received.)

    >> *notices that jason didnt tell me his IRCname…*

I’ll a little busy these days. I’ll make myself available on IRC once I get more free time.

    >> I’m always dismayed when see someone crossing the line between love and blind fanboyism :(

You mean going from fanboyism to love, right?

    >> Kamichu REALLY didn’t belong on that list. Neither did the series in slots 6-9.

One doesn’t belong, but it sure ain’t Kamichu.

  46. Re: Kamichu not belonging — I really have no opinion, as I’ve never seen it. The comment and the sentence following it were both to tweak Nidek for calling Jason a blind fanboy. Amazing, the number of humor impaired fans out there… must be due to lobotomies done by killer lolis, no? /deadpan/ That’s what you get for hanging around with them — one day you’re a bucket of laughs, next, well, there goes your sense of humor and your spleen. /deadpan/

Judging by how funny that is (not), either it’s 2am local or the lolis have already visited me. I’m gonna go check for my spleen now. Or just go to bed.
