lucky ☆ star 9

Terrified Tsukasa 4tw. Best genuine horror from Kyoto since either Mikuru met Haruhi or Sagara realized that Tess was going to stay with him on her vacation.

image

Another random episode, which is pretty much what I expect from Lucky Star at this point. There’s really not a lot to talk about… so I’ll meander too. Come to think of it, shouldn’t AoMM posts about Lucky Star be the perfect storm of off-topicness? Damn. Should have thought of this sooner. I think episode was about terror and horror though.

Concerning the fortune telling bit, some believe that the Japanese do believe more in horoscopes and pre-determination than most Westerners. I’m not sure what my blood type says about me (try to guess!), but I hope it screams out loud: “Hey, I need this type of blood for transfusions!” at least. Though before I can be convinced, they need to do a serious study on blood types and their gravitation towards different moe modes, i.e. what blood type prefers meido? Miko? Nurses? Oneesama? Oniisama? DFC? Melonpan? Traps? Chris Hansen? This is what’s important.

(What if I found out my blood type corresponds to a preference towards miko instead of meido? How can I go on after that? I’d rather just not know… knowledge can be terrifying sometimes.)

The fortune telling with sushi… I tried to find a website for this, and I all found was a “what type of sushi are you?“. OTL.

My score on The “What Sushi Are You?” Test:

Anago Urimaki
(77% Adventurousness, 51% Complexity, 60% Heartiness)

Anago Urimaki (Sea Eel Inside-Out Roll) – Sweet soy-grilled sea eel paired with matsutake mushrooms wrapped in sushi rice and steamed baby asparagus, and drizzled with a little black soy molasses. We are talking top flight fusion sushi as cutting edge as as anything on Iron Chef or 4 star Michelin guide restaurants. Not that someone as hip as you would have it any other way. But this is just a brief stop on the world cuisine adventure for you, and you’re apt as not to pair it with some other carefully chosen and oh so elegant nibbles for your next flavor rush.

I do love unagi though. Still, not as awesome as my type of pizza

Meatball Pizza

Unusual and uncompromising.
You’re usually the first to discover a new trend.
You appreciate a good meal and good company.
You’re an interesting blend of traditional and modern.

No, AoMM has not gone 17 year old MySpace on you. But thanks for the concern. Scared for a minute there, hun?

The cake buffet bit also was interesting because it shows how quickly something “fun” can turn into something that isn’t “fun.” For example, I like photography, but I’m finding that what I like about it is going out and taking the pictures, not dealing with the massive jpg and raw overload afterwards. I still have a few CF cards full of photos that I haven’t gone through yet, partly because I view it as an unfun chore now. I have pretty much the same feeling as Tsukasa at that point… “This isn’t fun!” But as I’m going through my fiftieth picture of some random bird, I forget sometimes that I did have fun earlier, and that kinda deprecates the fun that I had earlier in a weird way.

Maybe another example is forcing yourself to blog about something just because you feel like you have to. Nonsense. Blog when you have something to say, otherwise you’ll burn yourself out. Take it from someone approaching year five. Needless to say, I have many gaps in my archives, and I can’t be prouder. Maybe I’ll finish up Code Geass in 2009 at this rate.

(Of course, nothing terrifies me as Maria ending up looking like that someday. NOOOOOO!)

Wikipedia “Kawaisa” Entry:

As a cultural phenomenon, cuteness is increasingly accepted in Japan as a part of Japanese culture and national identity. Tomoyuki Sugiyama, author of “Cool Japan” believes that “cuteness” is rooted in Japan’s harmony-loving culture, and Nobuyoshi Kurita, a sociology professor at Musashi University in Tokyo, has stated that “cute” is a “magic term” that encompasses everything that’s acceptable and desirable in Japan.

Britannia should have invaded with Beanie Babies and Tickle Me Elmos, not mecha on rollerskates.

For the 24% or so who have currently voted for Kagami, are you nuts? After watching that cake scene where she tries to force feed Konata, I’m pretty sure she’ll turn into one of those wives who’ll henpeck her husband to the point where he’d take a bath with a toaster. Sounds like bad times. Very bad times. I’d be scared of someone like Kagami, who could probably pull off a ツンデレ act long enough to get ya hooked… then whammo! Scary, hun? At least for the ~31% voting for Konata, I can rationalize that with a, “Yep… these are my readers. :3”

image

Cakegasm. Andohbytheway, what’s with old Asian people and buffets? A lot of my Asian friends and I all noticed that our parents gravitate towards buffets rather than normal restaurants as they get older. I think it’s part of the natural aging process, and I’m as terrified as Tsukasa at Saw 3 since it’s probably hereditary. I might as well stock up on visits to Sonoma Chicken Coop and Dish Dash while I have the craving to.

image

Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya will not be complete unless there’s a scene with Haruhi commanding Mikuru to lie down, and she’s shaking as she obediently does so. I think Mikuru could pull off this moe mode two times better than Miyuki does here. No one out-dos Mikuru in being completely subservient while being completely afraid.

image

Crescent Love in my Raki Suta? Quality. Isn’t this like adding Carrot Top to the cast of Ocean’s Fourteen?

image

Konata reminds me a lot of the typical Japanese oyaji. Maybe her father really is rubbing off of on her, though I wonder what is her favorite dating sim… I think it would be hilarious if a few episodes down the line, she’s screaming at her monitor, “Fuck you! Where’s my Nayuki ending?!?”

image

Another epic installment of Lucky Channel. I enjoyed Taniguchi, completely and utterly scared out of his wits, trying to take a picture of Akira, only to screw it up royally because he was shaking so much that the image stabilization system of the camera couldn’t compensate. Awesome. Now that’s terror.

image

Where did that terror come from? The legendary ashtray attack. Everything was rolling along fine, but with Akira, we’re always waiting for the breakdown. And it came once Taniguchi introduced Tsukasa, which only adds to why I’m picking Tsukasa the creme of the Lucky Star crop: Akira idol jealousy mode. Anything that riles up Akira is a good thing.

(And I haven’t even mentioned Taniguchi’s attempt at Densetsu no Mikuru…)

What something else scary? Try the When They Cry dub. Yes, they named it, “When They Cry.” I guess “Killer Lolis” didn’t pass muster.

image

Okay, enough is enough. Stop the teasing. Where is my “Aya Hirano Sings Random Songs” 4 CD compilation? Or maybe Kyoto needs to run a “Karaoke Date with Aya Hirano” contest, 1 entry per Lucky Star DVD purchased… I think this would end up having Lucky Star 1 smash Casino Royale in the sales charts. Now that’s truly scary.

Well, this has been the trend in the AS forums, and has been fun so far. :P

And now, I’ll go and try to make an ashtray attack gif…

  3. My god. Geneon should die. The sad thing is they’ve already killed USO DA, Desu~ and now they’re coming after our favorite tsundere’s – Shana and Louise? Jason, I think you should lead the revolt against the Geneon. In AOMM we trust. What happens if they get Hayate the combat butler and totally…like Rena/Suiseiseki-fy her? That’s a fate too terrible for even Shion to come up with.

  4. > (What if I found out my blood type corresponds to a preference towards miko instead of meido? How can I go on after that? I’d rather just not know… knowledge can be terrifying sometimes.)

Hey, aren’t mikos basically maids, except their master are the kami? Kind of like nuns, or something like that.

    >For the 24% or so who have currently voted for Kagami, are you nuts?

Hey, your poll asked who’s the LS girl you like, not who’s your potential wife. Otherwise, I’d pick Tsukasa. Or Miyuki for the benefits.

I seriously think Akira will be in the main show soon, probably when the rest of the cast is introduced, like Konata’s other cousin, and the yuri fangirl doujin artist.

Their Rena is actually pretty good, and quite well rounded in her performance, which is particularly important in the first arc. Mion is okay, I guess. But…

K1 and Satoko are horrible, though, and Rika? **shudder** What are they thinking? I can see the meeting now:
Geneon Director: “Hey, we’ve got a can’t-be-more-than-9-or-10-years-old loli character here, but let’s not go the normal route in voice casting, as she’s kind of ‘wise beyond her years.’ Any suggestions?”
Geneon Flunky: “Let’s have her sound like she’s 40-something. That would rock!”
Geneon Director: “Well, I don’t know… Of course, when you were at ADV, it was your idea to give Himeko a valley girl accent, and I thought that worked out well, so we’ll do it.”
quigonkenny: “I feel a great disturbance in The Force… It’s as if thousands of horror-otaku lolicons cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced… Oh well.” **goes back to watching Claymore**
And it’s not like their voice actress hasn’t portrayed someone with a more fitting voice in the past…

    And yeah, the name sucks.

  6. Lol @ buffet scene, really well done. Where did my episode go? first thing I knew I was enjoying another quality episode of Lucky Star, and then *poof* lucky channel came, I really think it lasted longer this time I hope after Akira talks enough crap about the main cast, they go up to her during a lucky channel and beat the crap out of her and taking over the time slot for quality Miyuki costume raping with an extravagantly happy Shiraishi dancing in the background with Akiras’ head on a pole.
So anyways time to check out that Higurashi dub.

  7.
I’m the exact same type of sushi as you O_o
So I do. That’s scary.

[quote}Britannia should have invaded with Beanie Babies and Tickle Me Elmos, not mecha on rollerskates.
Invasion with mecha is so passe, I second Tickle Me Elmos, have an Empire State Building-sized Pikachu statue and I am pretty sure you can pull a Trojan Horse over Japan. Enforce law over conquered Japan with guys in Bonta-kun suits, they’ll never riot.

  8. I’m… so, so bored to do this.

    Sushi: Niji Urimaki
    65% Adventurousness, 43% Complexity, 45% Heartiness

Niji Urimaki (Rainbow Roll) – An inside-out roll with a lot going for it… And in this case a lot of different lovely slices of fish, wrapped around sushi rice, cucumber and radish sprouts. No, it’s not traditional, but it satisfies your craving for a new experience with every bite. Salmon, tuna, breem, mackerel, snapper, shrimp, and halibut all have a place in this smorgasbord of tastes. Some might call you “indecisive,” but why settle for less than a little of everything?

    Cheese Pizza

    Traditional and comforting.
You focus on living a quality life.
You’re not easily impressed with novelty.
    Yet, you easily impress others.

    Cheers.

  9. Ashtray? Awesome.

    Mi-mi-mikakuru, Minorun-run? Awesome.

    Implied crossdressing Shiraishi? Horrifying.

Tsukasa is so easily manipulated. She will make an excellent bride.

  10. I got Niji Urimaki as well.

  11. And the sentence : “Not even Pops ever hit me !!!” ? Sounds like something old ? Oh my god ========> I was literally rolling on the fuckin’ floor laughing …

  14. Speaking of higurashi…

    New teaser trailer!

  15. Without a doubt, the best Lucky Channel so far. The [gundam] as[h]tray attack was merely icing on the cake. I’m slightly surprised Konata is the type that likes horror movies… now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go watch the episode again. It seems that almost every season there’s a show I get obsessed about; while Gurren Lagann is still my #1, Lucky Star is the one that I watch (at least) twice before next episode is out.

  16. >>>For the 24% or so who have currently voted for Kagami, are you nuts?

What can I say, I’m weak for tsunderes.

I think basically what Lucky Star going is that each episode has its share of “cute” moments that you’d just want to watch over and over again.
For me the cutest moment this episode has to be the eyedrop scene… if we get more shots of Konata “bullying” Miyuki then she might be more of a interesting character other than the master of trivia.

Speaking of horoscopes, I did one of em Gundam horoscopes once for my whole family: my dad was GP-02 (Gundam), my sister was RX-78-2 FA (Gundam), my mom was MK-II (still Gundam), and I turned out to be NZ-333 α Azieru (giant MA thing that shoot bits in Char’s Counterattack)… wtf?

  17. Where is the rest of the cast, anyway? There are 12 cheerleaders in the opening, and we’ve only met 4 of them.

  18. funny how tsukasa is gonna be a new reference point of moe.

  19. Oh don’t be too hard on Geneon. Sure they can get sloppy or lazy, and they miscast some VAs. But USO DA and desu (like Ana’s English in Strawberry Marshmallow) don’t really have a correct translation. And the English dub of Shakugan no Shana was quite listenable.

As for the title “When They Cry”, I remember being quite angry when I got my R1 Shana vol. 4 and found “Wirhelmina” spelled with an “R”. But then I found out that the official Japanese series guidebook, “Shakugan no Shana no Subete”, actually had the spelling as “Wirhelmina”. “When They Cry” is similar to that, in that it appears on the cover of the original visual novel game. It may be wrong, but it’s official.

It isn’t so easy to overturn the “official” spelling, as AN Entertainment found out in the case of the perpetually sleepy teacher from Hare+Guu, “Reji”. This is clearly a romanization of “Lazy”, and AN had to fight to have “Lazy” as the official spelling on the R1 release over “Reji”. Geneon might just have been too… lazy, to think of or fight for a better title.

  20. More OP parodies

    Way to mix the memes…

  21. >>>But then I found out that the official Japanese series guidebook, “Shakugan no Shana no Subete”, actually had the spelling as “Wirhelmina”. “When They Cry” is similar to that

“L” and “R” are all the same in Japanese, so when they were doing the English, most likely they just chose “R” for the hell of it, not caring whether it’s right or not. You can argue that such things are “official” per se… But, when your bringing over stuff over seas to a country where the word (in this case her name) originates from, and where people are inevitably going to go “Hey look at the funny Engrish”, it’s really much better to do it right. In short, Japanese Engrish sucks.

As for the Higurashi’s title 1. That looks more like an after title than the main title. 2. Just who in the world would Geneon had to have fought in order for them to use the more literal (and less retarded title)? And them not fighting for the better title is good reason enough to have fans complaining.

I knew that was offical. So I have no problem with the title. But they just could have kept Desu there for the sake of keeping it there.

  23.
Where is the rest of the cast, anyway? There are 12 cheerleaders in the opening, and we’ve only met 4 of them.
10, actually.
3 of the shown characters are from a lower grade (Yui’s sister and her two friends) and the other 3 are girls from Kagami’s class (she just never really had much interaction with them since she’s always hanging out in Konata’s class).

  24. Rika’s butchered dub disturbs me more than watching Higurashi episodes 3-4 my first time.

  25. XD I loved this episode

Off topic, but on equal awesomness

    http://www.dailymotion.com/vid.....rashikaipv

    OH. F****. YES.

  26. Sometiems is good to have a series liek this one. Azumanga Daioh will be superior, but still… good pick.

  27. i got same sushi, and same result except 47% complexity

  28. “What something else scary? Try the When They Cry dub. Yes, they named it, “When They Cry.” I guess “Killer Lolis” didn’t pass muster.”

Whoa, did you hear the Ooishi & Keiichi part? Didn’t everybody’s favorite oldman cop sound EXACTLY like McGruff?

“RAWR, TAKE A BITE OUTTA CRIME KEIICHI!”

  29. “No, AoMM has not gone 17 year old MySpace on you. But thanks for the concern. Scared for a minute there, hun?”

Bricks were shat. In several directions.

  30.
Just who in the world would Geneon had to have fought in order for them to use the more literal (and less retarded title)? And them not fighting for the better title is good reason enough to have fans complaining.
You have a point. I’m not quite sure why AN had to fight for “Lazy” over the official “Regy” in Hare+Guu when changing titles and even character names is commonplace in localizations of anime and anime-style games (like “Akutare” to “Axel” in Disgaea 2). Maybe it was the terms of the licensing contract.

Or maybe it was like when they decided to call Aa Megami-sama “Ah My Goddess”. When the series creator was consulted about the title, he agreed that “Oh My Goddess!” was a more appropriate title in English. But since the Japanese merchandise already had the “Ah!” version, the “Ah!” version stuck for consistency. This may have been a reason behind the “When They Cry” title choice or the name “Wirhelmina”.

So I guess my point would be, whenever a translator makes a conscious decision to translate a name, title, or dialogue in some way (something so deliberate that it can’t have been a careless mistake), there’s a reason behind that decision that makes sense. It may end up in giving the fans a good reason to be angry. But although the translator’s decision may be retarded, it’s often not as retarded as it seems at first glance.

Even the (overturned) title choice of “Shadow Warrior Chronicles” for Utawarerumono or the butchering of One Piece by the censorship of 4Kids – which definitely are retarded decisions that made fans angry – have sensible reasons behind them. Although those reasons often don’t take the fans’ interest to heart.

  31. Love the way Taniguchi is growing a backbone while Akira is both encouraging it and heavily discouraging it then he shows that no man can withstand the wrath of an angry/jealous pink-haired loli.

Also, I want to see what kinds of expressions Tsukasa would come up with if given some ero-doujinshi. ;P

  32. tukasa da~!!

  36. I would buy a “Aya Hirano Sings Random Songs” 4 CD compilation in a heartbeat.
Also, Mikuru surpasses Miyuki in “moe” any day.

  37. Gross. I got the same type of sushi as you too.

  38. “Also, Mikuru surpasses Miyuki in “moe” any day.”

That’s just because Mikuru is older.
