lucky ☆ star 13

I can’t think of a tagline here that doesn’t sound perverted. So screw it. I’d eat her confectioneries, if you know what I mean.

(Did you see the guy who gave the other guy choco right before this scene? Cracked me up to the point that I almost missed Tsukasa’s moe moment.)

Lucky Star has pretty much become a more tame, friendlier, and infinitely more moe version of South Park. They’re calling out other shows and series without repercussions… instead of having Chef turn into a child molester or blaming Canada, Lucky Star is more or less just praising shit they like. It almost feels like this is Kyoto Animation’s version of an anime blog. We’ll know for sure, in a few weeks, if Konata arrives to class with a machete or Miyuki is representing the rifle team at the cultural festival.

I think it’s very interesting that they kinda just gave up on their own base source material and are just flooding product placement to the point that I started having flashbacks to the Transformers movie (waaaaaaay too much product placement). It’s a different direction from what Genshiken tried to do… the problem with the otaku being otaku genre has always been that after the initial fun making, there’s not a lot of substance. Okay, fanboys are crazy. We know this. Genshiken tried to extend its life by turning into a weird romantic comedy, whereas Lucky Star has turned into bizarro South Park.

I can understand all the reference to past Kyoto programs, but Keroro and Shuffle and other stuff has been more inexplicable. Are they paying Kyoto for product placement? Or does Kyoto enjoy these shows and hence pay the proper homage? I’m guessing that Kyoto does enjoy these (since they also did that Higurashi-like preview for Haruhi), and, well, anyone who likes Keroro has good taste. :) I’m definitely rooting for Kyoto to take over Keroro production from Sunrise.

Shooting Stars

~Uguu!

Horie Yui better be careful too… Aya’s gunning for her roles as well. Let’s just add the following songs for the “Songs Aya Hirano Should Have Sung” CD compilation:

  • Love Destiny, this is a must.
  • Fly Me to the Moon, for the upcoming Eva movies.
  • New Future, just to horrify all the Full Moon fangirls.
  • Last Regrets, complete with Konata wondering why can’t you trip the Nayuki flag.
  • Find the Way, riveting.
  • Pacchonbo Mo Inoi, even more riveting.
  • Toki ni Ai wa, needs modern sensibilities.
  • Denwa Shite Darling, with Taniguchi sliding into the Gan-chan role.

And many more!

image

Probably my favorite scene of the episode where we’re almost at the six minute mark and Tsukasa has not done or said much, and then she randomly tosses out a, “Rice cakes go where?” line. Slayed me. I didn’t think it could have been topped… but it did.

image

Considering how much more popular Yu-Gi-Oh and other collectible card games are to poetry, I’m going to second Konata’s suggestion and have Yu-Gi-Oh battles replace traditional Japanese games. It’s the sensible upgrade to do, kinda like introducing the three point line and a shot clock to professional basketball.

image

Mikuru? Is that you?

(Andohbytheyway, aren’t the Lucky Star girls older than most of the Haruhi girls?)

image

Listening to the girls talk about good luck dreams, I don’t know about you, but a good luck dream is probably having a sandwich. A Jessica Alba and Jessica Biel sandwich, that is. And, yeah, it’s near impossible to write a blog following a cartoon that depicts 17 year old schoolgirls as 12 year olds, so screw it. If I sound like a pig, I sound like a pig… spider pig… spider pig…

image

PS2?!? You have failed me again, Konata… I fully expect a Wii there.

image

Tsukasa choco 4tw! :3

image

“You’re such a girl” Tsukasa 4tw! :D

Between LOL FANG-SENSEI and the teacher from Tokyo Majin, where the hell do all the hawt blonde teachers who weigh less than 100 kilos come from? I sure didn’t see any while I was in high school, and I went to high school in America.

image

Reason #5,418 why Kyoto Animation is top dog right now: they go along with their fans and run with it. Smoked cheese ~nyoro! Can you imagine any other studio tossing in the most famous tagline of the most famous deformed and retarded doujinshi character loosely based on a minor character from another unrelated series? I’m a big fan of Churuya, if you haven’t guessed by now…

image

Really weird listening to Sagara lead the Keroro Platoon in just a completely random and nonsensical buying adventure for Konata. It was just ridiculous to have a parody within a parody. But hearing the seiyuus for Keroro, Giroro, and Tamama in their normal voices were kinda surprising, and it would be hard to recognize if they didn’t break out into their traditional “GEROGERO” and “DE ARIMASU” once in a while. It’s kinda like watching Herman’s Head and realizing after a while, “Whoa, those are all the voice actors for the Simpsons!”

(The over/under for people who read this blog and have seen Herman’s Head must be… 4. Take the under.)

image

Giroro’s tent. Pretty awesome. I want to see Rena hiding in one in the Hinamizawa city dump. The Code Geass parody was interesting too, but I hope Kyoto is watching Code Geass and is cracking jokes while watching it. Worst case scenario, is, of course, they’re watching it going, “This is genius! Are you taking notes on this Yutaka Yamamoto?!? This is fantastic!”

image

As awesome as their cameos were, it felt lacking. It’s just not the same if Natsumi isn’t around berating the frogs. Now that would have been awesome.

image

I’d say, “moe blob,” but this is Kagami. DO NOT WANT. J/K.

image

I was both riveted and horrified of Akira’s “D-D-D-Drill” like if she were a coke fiend. Just fantastic. Gotta love all the love that Taniguchi is getting. This is his breakout series, and he doesn’t even get 1/15th of all the lines. It’s even more fun picturing Aya Hirano freaking out, “Wait, I thought I was the star!!! Not this loser!!!”

(Andohbytheway, I noticed that Miyuki came in eighth. Ouch. We might have to bring her into the shop for a moe tune-up. My advice? Scrap the glasses. Scrap the rich girl bit. Show up at all times in a meido uniform while ducking softballs. Maybe you’ll pass the characters who haven’t even really showed up yet this way…)

But Drill Fiend Akira was pretty awesome, it doesn’t top…

image

Taniguchi in the flesh! I almost laughed up a lung during this bit and definitely topped Tsukasa’s “Rice cakes go where?” comment from earlier. I’m not sure what was better: Taniguchi’s singing, his acting, his posing, his fronting, his demeanor, his dancing, his outfit, or the VH1 Pop Up Video-like commentary from the Kyoto Animation overlords. Great way to end the episode… that’s what I thought until…

image

The Keroro platoon narrating the next episode preview. Having guests do the previews is pretty cool… maybe next time we can get Bonta-kun or a Kyon/Itsuki tag-team.

    That makes two of us.

  3. That makes two of us.>

    That makes two of you.

  4. There is not enough moe-blog Miyuki. Maybe KyoAni doesn’t know their audience ENOUGH.

  5. I think I lost weight with the energy I used laughing at the uguu, brilliant.
    Shiraishi is my new hero.
I don’t really understand the drills.
Miyuki should be much farther up than 8, shes so awesome.
Just when I thought this series couldn’t get any better, I watched 14 this morning, it’s just never ceases to amaze me.

  6. This blog is a good compliment to the episode. Serves well to enhance the jokes.
    Smoked Cheese ~nyoron!

  7. Omochi unyyon~
You know, Miyuki actually looked pretty cute in those flashback montages when she was looking flustered. I think we need to have her flustered more, and her popularity will skyrocket.
I wonder if KyotoAir’s hinting that they’d like to take over the production for Keroro Gunso… but then again, something that awesome rarely actually happens.

  8. I think it’s very interesting that they kinda just gave up on their own base source material and are just flooding product placement

Er, not exactly. The source material is also nothing more than glorified product placements, anime/manga/gaming reviews, and company blog in one gloriously surreal manga form. They’ve had Touhou Project, Gundam, and even Mai Hime references at one point and another.

The Anime Tenchou bits though were new material, AFAIK. Probably a stipulation by Animate in order for KyoAni to be able to insert all those product references?… These guys should seriously get their own show (animated by KyoAni, of course), they rock in their own series, they’re pretty much the main reason I watch Lucky Star: http://www.animate-world.com/animetenchou.html

  9. I’ll have to say that the Keroro parts of this were the best – both the shop part, as well as the preview, since they pretty much stole the preview from Keroro Gunso (minus perhaps the music), and just wrote in the right style if that wasn’t the seiyuu ad-libbing.

That, and the Ayu reference… mmm.

  10. >well, anyone who likes Keroro has good taste. :) I’m definitely rooting for Kyoto to take over Keroro production from Sunrise.

Very well said. I’m hoping Sunrise will return the favor and we’ll see Kagami and Konata walking by in the background in a future Keroro episode…Legendary Reciprocal Product Placement would be awesome.

    >It’s the sensible upgrade to do, kinda like introducing the three point line and a shot clock to professional basketball.

The best possible upgrade to pro basketball: watch pro football instead :p

    >where the hell do all the hawt blonde teachers who weigh less than 100 kilos come from? I sure didn’t see any while I was in high school, and I went to high school in America.

Americans weigh under 100 kilos? Hell, a hospital near me just had to invest in special beds and equipment to serve ~1,000-pound (~450 kg) patients. Once the Mega Mac crosses the Pacific, the average American teacher will probably weigh 1,000 kilos…

  11. ….Just making sure here, but, you DO know that 1 kilo equals 2.2 pounds, right? 100 kilos is 220 pounds, 1000 is over a TON…You’re out of ‘human’ territory and into ‘Landscape’ when you hit 1000 kilos.

  12. The guy giving Choco to another guy was Shiraishi Minoru AKA Taniguchi. Go to 14:37 and look behind Tsukasa (^^)

Isn’t it a reference to episode 1 or 2 when they talk about the dentist?
And 14 was certainly another very impressive episode.

  14. Speaking of Churuya…Nyoro Nyolo (the pacchonbo mo inoi video) just recieved a sequel:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYQLCk9h3Fc

  15. That was awesome. This episode and last weeks really stood out.

    Wawawa~

  16. Can’t have enuff of Uguu~
And with Tsukasa cuteness and Kagami’s tasun tsun dere dere at it best!!!

  17. you spelt one tsun wrong. FAIL.

Maybe Konata is a Sony fangirl? The only time we’ve seen her associated with nintendo was when Cousin Yui-nee san was playing her DS, every other time its Konata holding a dual shock, sometimes with attached Kagami.

For some reason, i keep thinking the drill comments were referring to Gurren Lagann…am i wrong?

  18. The drills are a reference to Maria-sama ga miteru, that is Touko, the girl with the “drill” hair style:
    http://www.gokigenyou.com/imag.....ouko02.gif

  19. The drills are referencing their own games on the DS, isn’t it?

Taniguchi was the highlight for this show this time. WAWAWASUREMONO~

  20. I see no reason why the drills shouldn’t be referring to Gurren Lagann.

And actually I seem to remember the girls were all playing with a Wii in one of the promo pics for the show:

  21. Actually, the drills harken back to the conversation in one of the early Lucky Channel segments, about Twin Drills and Twin Tails.

  22. Oh, and I REALLY hope you’re still gonna blog Gurren Lagann. 15 popped, and..wow. Just wow.

  23. lol, sorry for mistype. Dam, firefox spell checking doesn’t help me at all!!!! How come they don’t have tsun dere at its vocab list!!!! c’mon c’mon

  24. I can understand all the reference to past Kyoto programs, but Keroro and Shuffle and other stuff has been more inexplicable. Are they paying Kyoto for product placement? Or does Kyoto enjoy these shows and hence pay the proper homage?

Actually, Lucky Star was originally serialized in Comptiq and Shounen Ace, both of which are properties of Kadokawa. Keroro, Shuffle, and Haruhi are also properties of Kadokawa. I’m pretty sure Kyoto has a good license with Kadokawa to be able to push out the fast and furious references they have in this anime.

  25. Here’s a third for Herman’s Head. Loved that show!

  26.
Very well said. I’m hoping Sunrise will return the favor and we’ll see Kagami and Konata walking by in the background in a future Keroro episode…Legendary Reciprocal Product Placement would be awesome.
I think you’re late. Didn’t they already have the SOS-DAN girls show up on an episode of Keroro Gunsou a few months back?
    Ge-gero…

    Ge-gero…
Yes, Keroro was watching Haruhi some months back, so this is probably either ‘mutual admiration’ or ‘returning the favor’. Either way, I don’t mind at all… especially not since the intro to the next ep was a horrifically fun parody/homage of/to a Keroro Gunso one.

  28. Herman’s Head….damn I feel old.

I predict a Yeardley Smith reference in the near future.

  29. I remember watching Herman’s Head….hadn’t thought of that show in a long time. Thanks for reminding me.

Not only is the episode preview an Kerero homage/parody….it’s also a Haruhi homage/parody. Funnier than hell, as usual.

As for Taniguchi singing, well….we just GOTTA get that guy over here to Mount Horeb, Wisconsin for Thursday night karaoke at the FIREHOUSE.

  30.
(The over/under for people who read this blog and have seen Herman’s Head must be… 4. Take the under.)
cccola29 + quigonkenny + rikchik + Freeter + Fat Nakago = 5…
And that’s not even counting the ones who’ve seen it and won’t admit it. Should have taken the over.
And blog ZnT already, man. The sub’s taking too long and I need my Siesta fix.

  31. oh yeah, for those that forgot the origin of the wasuremono gag
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j89maflRKc
apparently its a pretty popular meme in japan…correct me if im wrong.

  32. Yeah I think the Keroro Gunsou production is going perfectly fine with Sunrise in charge there Suguru. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it goes the old adage. Let Sunrise mind its business and Kyoto Animation mind theres. Also there’s no favour to be returned as Kadokawa owned the rights to Keroro Gunsou anyway. Sunrise had jack squat to do with anything. You are aware that Kadokawa Shoten is like a parent company to Kyoto Animation right and that they have business tied with Bandai, owners of Sunrise. It’s all one big karmic circle. Crap this is big, this is probably going to trigger the spam filter….we’ll see.

  33. what do ya mean by the ‘Higurashi-like preview for Haruhi’??

  34.
what do ya mean by the ‘Higurashi-like preview for Haruhi’??
The next episode preview of episode 7, where they gave a creepy style preview, and gave the title for the next episode title in Higurashi style, with a red letter in it.

  35. Oh man, Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei looks to be fantastic as well. I read the first couple chapters that got scanlated and saw the first episode of the anime translation. SHAFT might just redeem themselves a bit here for the Negima debacle. Plus! The return of Konoka and Yoko! I vote this be added to the blogging rotation.

  36. a.f.k. subbing a non-kyoto series for the first time in an uber long time?
It’s the end of the world!

  37. I think that ever since Gurren Lagann 15 killed any and all chances of a Simon X Yoko, our resident blogger has been in a perpetual state of shock and mourning.

And I do certainly hope Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei gets blogged here. The first episode was awsome.
