tomoyo fighter ~it’s an exciting life~

Final Fight + Tomoyo = 2D fighting bliss.

If you haven’t had your free time destroyed by Clannad x86 yet, how does a 2D fighter with over 30 characters and featuring the Clannad heroines sound? Tomoyo Fighter ~It’s An Exciting Life~ Perfect Edition is just that. The original Fakku thread about it is really good, so go their for the basics as well as to obtain the game.

(And, yes, this game is yet another reason why Tomoyo is awesome. Would you make a doujin 2D fighter based around Nagisa?)

The setup is very simple. You pick a character and an optional partner and then go through about 18 stages of Final Fight-ish mayhem. Prepare for ~30 minutes of intense button mashing to ensue. After each run through of the game, more and more characters are unlocked. Most characters have 2-3 special moves, and they’re all hilariously character appropriate. For example, Kyou’s special is that she runs over everyone with her scooter. (That one is also power overwhelming for boss rush mode.) Fuko attacks with starfish, Hatsune Miku attacks with her green onion and voice, and Hard Gay attacks with… uh… you get the picture. (Though it must be a bug that Fuko’s so much better of a fighter than Tomoyo… I mean… wow. Maybe this is why she’s the ninja master.)

Since I wanted to be able to play this game on my HDTV and use my PS2 controller, I decided to install the game on my Windows XP box rather than on my Macbook’s VM. The PS2 controller worked great, and it looked pretty on the television. The game even has a thoughtful widescreen mode.

Some quick play hints: use the throw button to pick up items and weapons, but not every character can use every weapon. Falling through holes only deducts a small sliver of life, but getting hit by a train is insta-kill. If you attack the CPU-controlled second player, she’ll attack back and curse at you. Always fun. Selecting a character with p or k grants one uniform and selecting with jump selects the alternate (I think). Pay attention for various omake, like the occasional Haruhi commercial on a background TV. The songs at certain points change depending on the characters selected. For example, expect a lot of midi Megumegu if you pick a Clannad heroine.

Some quick character data to help get ya started. May or may not be accurate. I didn’t spend a lot of time verifying, and I’m still iffy on a few. Specials are moves that deplete your SP gauge. Some attacks like Tomoyo’s k+p and Kyou’s ff+k or p are fancier than the basic attacks, but they don’t deplete the gauge. If you guys figure out more moves, please share.

Tomoyo

Throw? Yes. Different throws depending on how you grab the victim.
Weapons? Non-firearms.
Specials? Thousand kicks (ff+k or p)

image

Fuko

Throw? No.
Weapons? No.
Specials? Summon starfish (qcp+k or p) (also makes great anti-air attack) (at one point, I got an army of 8 starfish, and it was awesome)
Kirby-like starfish ride (k+p)
Starfish boomerang (ff+k or p)
Fuko is shining! (dash+throw)

image

Kyou

Throw? No.
Weapons? Non-firearms.
Specials? Hit-and-run (k+p) (can keep pounding k+p to keep on her on scooter)

image

Kotomi-chan

Throw? No.
Weapons? None.
Specials? Death by violin (k+p)

Nagisa (Dango Hax)

From Sheba:

Throws: No
Weapons: No
Punch: Too slow, don’t bother about it.
Kick: Dango projectile. It’s great, it’s her staple attack. You spam like the motherfcking Sonic Boom and you can attack crowds with it or people off-screen as they can bouncing forth. It’s great against the jerks riding vehicles. The dango spam is great.
P+K: The Dango Song. She sings and is fully invincible while doing it. Then dango circle comes out. Usually use it when you are surrounded, knocked down and being ganged on.
Forward Forward + Punch: Call Sanae. She lay a bread on the ground. Having seen the anime, I am not sure if it is a good idea to pick it up.
Forward Forward + Kick: Call Akio. He comes, then rush forward while laying the smack down with his baseball bat. It’s is the attack to use in combination with the dango projectile. Nagisa is terribly slow, movement and melee wise. She is best at crowd control, away from the gangs while firing dangos and calling Dad.

(Nagisa cannot run! But her dango hax is quite impressive. You must have the 2.05 patch to play as Nagisa.)

Yuko

Throw? No.
Weapons? None.
Specials? Earth shatter (k+p) (almost insta-kill if you land on the target)
Beam (k or ff+p)

Hatsune Miku

Throw? No.
Weapons? None.
Specials? Note spam (dash + throw)
Notes from above (p+k)
Onion toss (ff+p or k)

  1. What? That’s madness. I guess these kind of games will never die in Japan.

  2. Suigintou versus Tomoyo? How unbalanced… for Tomoyo. Suigintou could rip Tomoyo’s heart out and eat it for lunch. Especially if Tomoyo made the mistake of calling her ‘junk’.

  3. Death by Violin? what more could I ask for. And I was already trying to find a way to entertain myself tonight.

  4. Actually, Suigintou was my teammate. She feather spammed the whole time, which was annoying since friendly fire was on.

  5. You’d think Kyou would have a combat dictionary throwing weapon or something.

  6. I have a presentation due tomorrow. The chances of me finishing it up on time is suddenly reduced by 50%.

  7. jason: Actually, Suigintou was my teammate. She feather spammed the whole time, which was annoying since friendly fire was on.

That’s because Suigintou has no allies. Merely ‘people she’s killing now’ and ‘people she’ll kill later’. Unless you’re Megu, in which case she might actually be fond of you… until she sucks your life-force dry. Or she might use the Rosa Mysticas to extend it.

  8. I want mion/shion with a killer loli mode. That or chidori with her fan.

  9. “Would you make a doujin 2D fighter based around Nagisa?”

Why yes…yes I would. Me personally I think Nagisa is just one bad day away from starting a massive killing spree. Shes just way to quiet and introverted. I’m waiting for that day where she just completely snaps and that plain normal face shows some Higurashi-level face distortions.

  10. Twilight Frontier should bring Eternal Fighter Zero back to life and add the Clannad characters in. There were so much gimmicks that would be great if they were ported over a 2D versus fighting game environment.

  11. http://derailedbydarry.com/ima.....200810.jpg

Is Kuma about to bully Kotomi? I’m thinking “Yes” no matter what the Japanese up there says.

  12. Is Kuma about to bully Kotomi? I’m thinking “Yes” no matter what the Japanese up there says.

The Japanese says: “Mr bear….you’re, very cute…”
I expect Kotomi to be molesting the bear soon. <_< which considering the bear is most likely Tomoyo…. I fully encourage.

  13. When controlled by the CPU, Nagisa is terrible, as in, do not pick her as your partner.

Have a human control her instead.

  14. Some characters also have a special move triggered by holding dash (some characters requiring running) and then pressing the throw key. For Fuko, this triggers her daydream shinny mode (which heals her). For Kyou, it summons her little pig botan (which tears through anything in it’s path). Kotomi’s move takes the cake if you are playing with a friend though, she drops a bento that restores all life (after she puts it down, pick it up like regular food). Also, I’m not sure what specific version you are playing, but if you are playing the one that allows you to choose what to say/do at certain events, what you pick determines what area you will go to next.

  15. Ah ha!

So that’s where you get your pr0ns…

  16. >> I expect Kotomi to be molesting the bear soon. <_ < which considering the bear is most likely Tomoyo…. I fully encourage.

There’s multiple bears in this game. I’m not sure which one I picked, but it wasn’t Akio. I think it might have been the Sunohara one.

    >> So that’s where you get your pr0ns…

Said the guy who e-mails me Hongfire links…

  17. “I’m waiting for that day where Nagisa just completely snaps and that plain normal face shows some Higurashi-level face distortions.”

And we all know she could do the laugh.

  18. Wow thank you for introducing me to fakku, really awesome site.

And this is an amazing article about the game, you should post a link in the original thread for the game as you have added a lot of information.

    Thank you!

  19. holding dash (some characters requiring running) and then pressing the throw key.

No, the trick isn’t making the characters run its the fact that the special is set to L+R input, which happens to be dash and throw.

Personally I love the fact that they gave Sunohara such a unique move:

    Only works on male opponents:
Grab the enemy with throw, then mash Kick.
Sunohara makes love to the guy, draining his HP restoring your own.

…Truly, Sunohara is clearly gay. Not to mention his back grab is a kanchou…yeesh.

  20. A team of Hard Gay and Sunohara would be so amazingly powerful that all men in a five foot radius would become instantly broken.

*sigh* I do love Hard Gay. Though he’s a huge stereotype that will most likely be viewed as minstral show era humor tweny years from now, at least he pumps out the luaghs and memes like nobodies business. Though everybodie’s business is Hard Gay’s business eventually ;)

  21. Awesome. It’s been awhile since I’ve played a good doujin game.

  22. “I’m waiting for that day where Nagisa just completely snaps and that plain normal face shows some Higurashi-level face distortions.”

And we all know she could do the laugh.

Didn’t you know? The next season is called Clannad no naku koro ni.

I wonder what the people who made that game were thinking. I mean, a fighting game for Clannad?!

  24. I wonder what the people who made that game were thinking. I mean, a fighting game for Clannad?!

Doujin Fighting games have been around for Key’s characters since nearly as long as Key itself has been around. As proof, go take a look at Eternal Fighter Zero The last one issued, memorial, included MOON, ONE, Kanon, and AIR’s characters. You probably already recognize the group that made EFZ since they’re responsible for both Higurashi Daybreak as well as the Touhou fighting games.

  25. I was wondering what quarter center front means. So I was wondering if anyone could tell me.

  26. sorry if you not used to qcf term . it means from down –> down-front –> front motion. some fighting guide use them, some use 236 as what you can see in num pad button. with 5 as center if you imagine that a fighting stick was on number 5

  27. Oh thanks! I also managed to unlock Ai, she’s really powerful but she can’t run or grab, and she she can’t use weapons.
Some moves I got out of her is:
P+K = blood rain (Massive damage)
P,P,P(Or K,K,K) = hit combo, slash, slash throw
    f,f + P = bloody arms
    f,f+ k = bloody arms further

  28. how do you use the qcf on tthe game? i need better description

  29. qcf = by doing fast motion down, down-front, front + attack button, just like hadoken in street fighter

  30. zomg this game is so fun!! just discovered it when i couldnt have enough of tomoyo <333

either ways, here are some tomoyo moves:

    Tomoyo 1 (casual wear):
    f, f + k (Front, Front + Kick) = chun-li style rapid kicks

    Tomoyo 2 (2nd year uniform):
    p + k (punch + kick) = backwards kick (doesnt consume SP)

    Tomoyo 3 (Tomoyo After):
    f, f + k (Front, Front + Kick) = Chun-li style rapid kicks
    f, f + p (Front, Front + Punch) = Block (doesnt consume sp)
    D + G ( Dash + Grab) = back step (dodge, doesnt consume sp)
qcf + p (Quarter Clock Forward [down, down-front, front] + Punch) = flying uppercut (same as the 5th hit of a punch combo)
qcf + k (Quarter Clock Forward [down, down-front, front] + Kick) = Back flip kick (same as the 5th hit of a kick combo)
p + k (Punch + Kick) = Double-Kick (one kick back wards and another kick forward, good when surrounded)

Apparently, the Tomoyo from Tomoyo after has alot more moves @_@ and she also can wield all weapons, so she is really bad ass! and to unlock her, input:
    flg(10,4)

in the cheat input menu. (credits go to quicksilver_zx from fakku.net)

  31. where can i find patch 2.05??

  32. what sunohara is gay?! he is certainly not like that in the anime.
