ga rei zero 1

Almost as awesome as Batman’s bike.

When I first started watching Ga Rei Zero, one thing crossed my mind. “Wait, what happened to Kensuke and Kaguya?” Apparently, Zero is based on a whole new set of characters and whole new set of plot and loosely based on the original manga. I’m not sure if the original needed any tweaking. It was an enjoyed typical shounen supernatural action series broken up with uncomfortable bits of harem action and fanservice.

I didn’t think the changes were made for the better. It was almost like a non-campy Gatekeepers with some Lucky Star-blatant anime homages. I even took notes… observe:

I really hope that’s not a genderswapped Fuyutsuki behind Gendo over here.

“Natsuki” fights with her motorbike? They should have just combined the “Natsuki” and the “Tooru” characters into one and gave them silver bullets. I’d watch that, especially if the genderswapped Fuyutsuki was “Shizuru.”

But then the final scene of this first episode gave me hope. The show just did a complete 180, and I have no clue where episode two or the rest of the series will take me. Just a fantastic wake-up call just when I was starting to get drowsy. I won’t spoil it for you, but do stay to the end.

(Yes, I still do miss the melonpan of the original.)

  1. I’m glad I watched this without reading any spoilers before-hand as the impact of the end turned an above average first episode into “OMG WTF just happened”.

  2. well when i heard ga-rei i seriously wanted to see kagura and kensuke :[ anyway the episode seems to be a good start

  3. i think this show is offering much more than it seems at first glance.

  4. This is a prequel, Jason. The story of Zero is set 3 years before the manga, in fact. Which is why the characters introduced will KEEP on dying off until the eponymous Ga-Rei is given the the main character of the manga.

  5. My exact sentiments. I was “Hey pretty alright anime action series, but why are my forum friends crowing about OMG WHAT ID THEY JUST DO TO EVERYONE F**********KKKKKK!!!!!”

The next episode can’t come fast enough. The rest of the series might be fail, but Ga-Rei Zero win hands down for best 1st episode

  6. I have never seen a shitty episode get turned around to FUCK AWESEOME so fast. It would be awesome if all the characters actually remain dead and the real main characters get introduced in episode 2, or 3 if 2 is a background story episode, but looking at promo poster, it looks like everyone’s coming back alive somehow…

  7. That had to be the most unexpected ending of a first episode since Lelouche started grinning evilly. I mean, I was kind of dissing the show for having such a clichéd pair at the center, and then the last five mnutes hits…..WTF?????

Speaking of which, only the other day I was browsing Google Images for screenshots from the rebuild movie they did a while back, clicked on one of the results, and in its non-thumbnail version it turned out to be a Shinji-ko >_> I hold you directly responsible for encouraging this sort of thing.

  9. Watch the second episode, I think it confirms that this is pretty much a prequel. Or they just like adding manga characters to make us think we know what’s happening.

  10. It’s only the first episode but I think they could just end it here and I’d be satisfied. It feels weird just saying that. Wow…

And you did not provide a link, why…?

  12. Val: You REALLY want a link? Fine.

Danbooru – showing the world how utterly depraved Japan is since 2000. Thank god that wasn’t the Neon Gender Evangelion version, which was arguably scarier.
