best of 2010: #4, #3, #2

A minor character. An even more minor character. And a most minor character.

#4: Amagami

Also wins for 2010:

  • Best Knee
  • Best Belly Button
  • Best Toes
  • Most Comfortable Lap
  • Most Fatty Belly
  • Best Stalker

Best pure harem series to come around recently (as in 2010 recently). Finally someone used the omnibus format for a harem anime, and it worked well. Not only did we get to see Junichi scoring with 5 (sorry Rihoko, but I guess Junichi doesn’t dig the big girls) haremettes, we got to see Junichi act out a few weird fetishes. Enjoyed Haruka’s knee, Tsukasa’s yandereness, and Ai’s overall A effort culminating in her riding Junichi in an outdoor hot spring as monkeys watched. Harem is a tired genre, and it’s nice to see the small touches make Amagami stand out.

(Again, imagine I wrote this back in 2011… pre-Amagami SS+ plus… gah, wish I could dock it some points for the bite-less sequel.)

#3: DRRR!

Also wins for 2010:

  • Best Soundtrack
  • Best Rivalries
  • Best Use of App Phones
  • Sexiest Headless Monster

DRRR! is one of those series that is just plain good. Interesting characters, good pedigree (Baccano!), competent animation team, interwoven plot… it’s an all-around good series, but it lacks the kick that a #1 or #2 overall pick need to have. Looking back upon this series, I loved the interaction between all the side characters more than the main ones. While there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with Celty or Mikado, I just like Shizuo, Izaya, Simon, Erika, Shinra, and Shinra’s dad even more… especially Shizuo and Izaya channeling Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote.

#2: My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute

Also wins for 2010:

  • Best Perverted Imouto
  • Best Co-op Gameplay
  • Most Facepalms
  • Best Eroge Parodies

My old blog entries for OreImo show a comedy that was excellent for the most part, but it felt incomplete. The characters felt like they wanted to be developed, but it just didn’t seem to happen. Nonetheless, the show was highly enjoyable– loved everyone’s brokenness, loved the weird situation of a brother and sister scoring haremettes together, loved the portrayal of modern anime junkies. AIC did an excellent job with animation, and the series was fun. The best episodes were the ones that focused on Kirino being as broken as she could be, including the meido episode (of course), the Rinko-chwan episode (creepily awesome), and the awkward day-to and love hotel with onii-chan episode (which sums up the series).

  1. A cool guy would put SoreMachi at #1.

  2. This rating system is flawed. K-on!! is obviously #1. Mio FTW
mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio mio

  3. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt ? Best anime of 2010 ? SERIOUSLY ?

  4. wartime k-on maybe

  5. If it’s about broken then #1 will probably be something like Hanamaru Kindergarten or Arakawa under the Bridge. maybe Angel Beats just to complain how it needs to be re-done.

  6. well im an idiot about angel beats =]

  7. Hedging my bets on either flying panties or apprivoise-ing, with a dark horse of undead masou-shoujo. Though that dark horse is like “heart of a black hole” dark.

  8. I want to say Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood got #1. The second half aired during 2010. I don’t know if that counts for you or not. If movies count though I’m guessing Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi. These two things were easily the best of 2010 for me. Don’t get me wrong though, I love Arakawa and Ore no Imouto.

  9. @Flags: FMA:B should be out of the running (rules are started by Dec. ’09, Brotherhood started in April ’09), but I forgot all about Disappearance…Its in the date range, but I’m not sure if Jason includes movies. If he does I’d switch my guess to Disappearance in an instant.

  10. Seeing this post reminds me that OreImo was definitely the best of the year. Amagami’s rankled very high for a bland harem show whose sole saving grace is Miya.

    Don’t tell me… HSOTD is #1?

  11. I could hope for Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood to be #1… or even The Tatami Galaxy (but I don’t even know if you’ve actually watched that show).

  12. Oreimo was a horrible choice for being in the top 4. DRRR was great until the angst killed it in the second half. There was too much suspension of disbelief involved.
